Fuel: post-apocalyptic 'GPS' navigation included
39
After the coming apocalypse, when the world devolves into an open-world racecourse, we'd be seemingly lost without the Garmins and TomToms of the bygone era. Fear not, though, for it seems a result of the globe-altering warming featured in Codemaster's Fuel is the appearance of giant, airborne ... pointers -- conveniently "pointing" out the path to the finish line. (All that's left, you see, is the finish line.) We suppose then, these guiding arrows are a fair trade for the vicious tornadoes and blinding sandstorms that also -- naturally -- plague this fascinating vision of the future.

Yeah I'm glad my GPS doesn't look like that, I'd have a seizure every time I had to make a turn.

Hopefully there's an option to turn it off.
I feel like GPS in a game like this kinda defeats the purpose of making it open-world. I imagined a racing game where it's up to you how you get to the next point, and having to find your own way. But here they're practically giving you directions. I can appreciate that they don't want players to get lost, but you can accomplish that without flying arrows that show you exactly where to go.

I used to be a fan of the MX ATV series until the 360 version Untamed. This game looks like a good version of one of them: lots of offroading, a ton of vehicles, plus good graphics. I hope this one turns out good. A demo would be nice closer to game day.

There's no bigger fan of FUEL than I, but showcasing the GPS system? Really? That's the best you can show off to sell your game? That makes me nervous.

My thoughts exactly. Such a lame thing to advertise when they haven't really even advertised some other features yet. And it's not like their GPS is all that innovative anyway.

Looks a lot like Motorstorm.
Which can only be a good thing since Motorstorm 2 was great.

I have played a demo version of FUEL at a codemasters stand at i36. From what i saw it wasnt that great, the arrows can be turned off in the demo and the controls are a bit slow, but its only a demo so.

It's the breadcrumb trail system, but in the air, and with moving red arrows. And without any of the subtlety.

Cool. The game is looking pretty nice.
I hope that it has custom soundtracks, though.

They already said it won't, it's just going to be that one song, on an infinite loop. And if you try to turn down the music, your save gets corrupted.

is that like an easy mode? i like it better in some games when it only pops up to tell you your going the wrong way. i also like to see how far i can get off track before the game resets me.
Posted: Apr 24th 2009 2:58PM WiredKnight said
Agreed. But if this game is really open-world, they won't ever reset you.

Looks like a better looking Motorstorm game. Those arrows look so unbelievably annoying. Maybe it's because the tracks aren't linear and are wide open. I hope they still give gamers the option to turn them off if we want.

The GPS arrows are a pretty hard fail, but as long as you can turn them off I'm cool. I was just playing Bioshock recently and was reminded that they put in an annoying navigation arrow for some parts. The first thing I did was turn it off. An annoying arrow telling you where to go doesn't necessarily ruin a game, its when you have no option to turn it off that the game becomes broken. I think that idea that was mentioned earlier of being able to click this navigation arrow on and off is a superior idea.
The music for this demo...oh lord. I really hope they pick a lot of different music when they do release the game.
Otherwise, I am actually looking forward to Fuel, even if it is a racing game with another four letter word. Of course, I'm REALLY looking forward to sequels to Dirt, Grid, and even Pure - but I can deal.

I think it'd be cooler to have a little screen-corner GPS system, making it more realistic and a little harder to navigate. Maybe the GPS could even reveal shortcuts if you watch closely enough. Racing is part about how best knowing to handle the terrain, and if you're given omnipotence right off the bat, then that takes away from the experience.

I wanted to buy this game, but after hearing the trailer music now all I want is genocide of my fellow man. Terrible choice in music *pukes*
