Wow.. This is the first time I've seen the actual system that they made together. I know Nintendo must be thinking to themselves from time to time.. "What the hell did we do here?" I wonder if there are any actual working systems out there?

the first Time I've seen the picture as well. I'm very happy they broke off because of the great history they made, but I'm also a little bitter (maybe not the right word, something weaker) that nintendo decided not to do this. The snes would have been much better with a CD, and I think nintendo just "didn't get it". I remember when the 64 came out and my brother's are I were just thinking "still not using CD's? why not?" and when the gamecube came out we were saying "yes! they're disk based... wait... what's that... a... mini-disk? huh?"

i still think that's true today to some extent. they did the business side better than competitors, and they did expand their base by leaps and bounds by marketing light and playful (been talked about to death, so I'm not going too deep here)- but on some accounts they just don't get what the gamers want. Mario galaxy is their hard-core game? serious? Still one-function system? really? the multimedia outlet without DVD's or music or video at all? what were you thinking.

Nintendo f*cked up by turning on Sony and going to Phillips for the same thing... while Sony was making it...

I don't think Sony should have paired with Nintendo. Nintendo has a reputation for "clean games", an I don't think God of War, or Grand Theft Auto would have really made it into the market.

Yea because Eternal Darkness Resident evil 4 0 or 1 remake Wargods arent from Nintendo systems (not that I'm for he Big N or anything) Nintendo just has alot of first Party franchises that date back to when fewer games were graphic that AND of course they ARE family oriented. You ARE kinda right though GTA woulda went from PC to Saturn it never woulda got swamped in PS1 sales.

Nintendo and Clean Games? Haven't you seen Mad World!?

Must say I'm a lot happier with the Playstation controller than the SNES based one flaunted in the piccy.

Dude, the amount of 'unclean' games Nintendo's ever had for their systems can be counted on one hand. There's a few pretty bad ones every now and then, but the majority of their games have almost always been family-oriented..... And really? You challenged Nintendo's reputation of making clean games by citing Mad World? Dude, that game came out last month, HOW long has Nintendo been making games?

If we're counting non-first party titles, like GTA? Keep in mind that Nintendo had a content control policy up to around '95, which was replaced by the ESRB.

N64 had Perfect Dark, South Park, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Turok, Duke Nukem, GCN had Eternal Darkness, Killer7, RE4, Wii has HOTD: Overkill, No More Heroes, MadWorld, RE:UC and the upcoming DC, Dead Space: Extraction, Animales de la Muerte. That's three hands of games off the top of my head.

Now, we probably wouldn't have gotten GTA, but that's not because of content. There wouldn't have been room for it on the N64's cartridge or the GameCube's minidisk.

Gaming would be very different, but it probably wouldn't be cleaner. And it's unlikely that we wouldn't have open world games-- the Dreamcast would've fared much better without FUD concerning PS2. SEGA might still have gone under, but then there's also the Xbox, which likely would've been the dominant console without PS2. They just would've come into being later.

That's the surprising thing about the video game industry. Every company always asks itself "What the hell did we do here?" and end up passing on an opportunity that takes the industry on a ride.

Take Sega for example. Sega had an opportunity with Sony on the Playstation as well. And Sega had a opportunity to use the technology behind the N64 back when they were building the Genesis, it would be with a CDROM though. It's amazing to think what the industry would be like with a Sega 64 Bit CD console. It would've also been interesting to see what Nintendo would've done if Sega had taken the technology first.

I wish I had a "what if" machine...

That. is. ugly..

the original PSone was supposed to just load, & then play.. then Psygnosis showed them how to use it to continuously load, while you played, really opened things up.. part of the PSones success was because of Sega & Nintendos mistakes.. Sega who still wanted 2D games, not thinking 3D would really take, with Sega Saturn.. then N who stuck with cartridges, which could take, think it was 6 months to get a new batch out there..

Had good times with my PS, even when I had to turn it upside down to get it to work.. simpler times, eh..

"a controversial split between the two left Sony sidelined, bitter ... and determined to beat Nintendo at its own game."

And beat them they did! Well, for a while, at least. :P

Wow. This brings back memories.

I remember seeing this picture. I was excited as HELL until I heard that Nintendo blew the whole thing.

But looking back on it, honestly, I really don't see the two companies working well together. Although it took a bit for Nintendo to recover (Really, Virtual Boy and the N64? Over $70/game? No, no thank you - and even with some of the stuff they had going for them, they still didn't have the same power that Sony did with the PS1, even with Zelda.) I think, as consumers, we benefited from the rivalry.

I'll just never forget reading GamePro or some second tier mag with this picture in it.

And in the end, that's really all I needed to say. I just ramble. A lot.

perhaps they should return to that philosophy.

In the End? Yeah but PS1 n 2 buried most competition at the time. Wii was a last ditch effort and if it had of failed Nintendo would be the new Sega, whoring off Mario games for eternity. Lucky for them Wii opened up a whole new market.

not really, deanb. Nintendo has always focused on profitablity, SEGA took a lot of risks that didn't pay off. Nintendo was in danger of becoming a niche platform, sure, but nothing like Sega's whoring. Even the GameCube, which is inarguably the darkest time in Nintendo's history, had great (if not-as-great) first party games, like Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, and Wind Waker. And they turned a profit while doing it.

SEGA not only took risks, but they pissed off a LOT of people. Go google the "Saturnday" debacle. If you think Sony's "599 US dollars"/"Attack it's weakpoint for massive damage"/"RIIIIIIIiiiiIIIDGE RACER!" E3, or Nintendo's "look at this dude on Wii Music"/"Throw the frisbee!" E3 were bad, Sega fucked up FAR FAR worse.

On the other hand, retailers seem to be warming up to Nintendo again. Heck, my Wal-Mart has had Playstation up front, Xbox in the middle, and Nintendo in the back for as long as I can remember-- last night, when I went to check their bargain bins, the Wii games had been moved up to the front, and they had Wii units sitting on the shelves, outside of glass cases.

I don't see the Wii as any more of a 'last ditch effort' than the DS. They tried something different, risky, and it worked. Keep in mind that Nintendo had plans for another gameboy, which didn't happen because the DS worked out so well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii was the exact same thing (which would also be why manufacturing was so low for so long); something they wanted to try, but they had a real next platform waiting for replace it if it didn't work out. See also the Virtual Boy; intended to be a 'third platform' instead of a competitor or replacement with the Nintendo console and Game Boy handheld.

You are now imagining a Wiimote with dual analog sticks and/or a Wii "Classic" controller with SIXAXIS-like functionality.

What is your immediate reaction?

I feel bitter why the PS is in last place this gen, I honestly do.. technically it lacks nothing.. it's on the bleeding edge of technology.. I hope Sony understands that the PS has become the Bugatti of gaming, Sony should think like Apple, they don't care about market share as long as they're gaining more profits with rapid growth rates.

599 US DOLLARS, for a start. Sony had no reason to be in last place this gen, especially after the massive success of the PS2. They got greedy, they raised the price double and triple their competitors, and people didn't like that.

Oh Jonathan.. youre being naive.. sony isnt being greedy for making the price of the PS3 that high.. its been stated time and time again--it costs more to make a ps3 than they are actually selling it for.
