Joystiq hands-on: Uncharted 2 co-op multiplayer
Thanks to games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Gears of War, online co-op gameplay has become an almost obligatory bullet point for modern action games. Naughty Dog has chosen to respond to the trend in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in a way that's slightly different than usual. Rather than shoehorn a second player into an experience already crafted for solo adventure, it's creating a separate side mission designed specifically with two to three players in mind.
Three-player co-op? Yeah, we were surprised, too. Having tried it with two other honest-to-goodness live humans, we can report that it not only works, but -- so far -- works very well. The combination of smart A.I. opponents, platforming elements and teamwork-based objectives seems a perfect fit for Uncharted 2. Ah yes, teamwork. It's something we quickly found you need to have nailed down -- preferably with two friends -- lest you wish to spend an afternoon yelling at the person who won't stop shooting to give you a leg up.

We quickly realized this was the same level we'd seen in the leaked GDC 2009 footage of Uncharted 2's single-player mode. |
We quickly realized this was the same level we'd seen in the leaked GDC 2009 footage of Uncharted 2's single-player mode. And, having watched it many times, we couldn't help but wonder if we'd actually be performing some of the platforming acrobatics in co-op that Drake had done solo. First, though, we had to rid the war-torn square of masked soldiers who seemed to be in unlimited supply. (That and stop getting shot as we gawked at the visuals, which looked just as good as what we'd seen of single-player.)
It turned out that Uncharted 2's co-op has a little bit in common with Left 4 Dead. In this case, we realized that if we stayed in one place for too long the game would send another wave of enemies our way. It really forced us to make every moment of silence count and definitely upped the intensity.
Before more enemies arrived on the scene, we high-tailed it to a glowing red circle at the base of an electrical pole. This circle had an icon in it indicating all three of us would have to work together in order to progress. Unfortunately, even though we were in the same room, one of our co-op partners didn't quite get the idea, leading to us into another bombardment from another round of bad guys.
The second time was the charm -- as we all stood at the base of the pole, an icon appeared telling us to hold Triangle. We were boosted up and grabbed hold of a small ladder attached to a nearby billboard. Just as in the single-player footage we'd seen, we had to leap across signs and do some free-climbing in order to enter a second story room. Meanwhile, more enemies arrived for the two other players below to contend with.
Once we'd reached our destination, we were again prompted to hold Triangle. This made our character (Chloe) push a toppled-over bookcase out of the window, sending it crashing onto the street below. We rejoined the other players and the three of us repositioned the bookcase to serve as stairs for getting atop an overturned bus blocking the way.
New area, same goons. There was another abandoned car here. Although we knew it could be used as cover, we decided to spray it with bullets instead. It worked; the mob of mercs approaching us were sent flying when the hatchback's gas tank went up in an impressive fireball. We quickly wished we'd saved the tactic, though, as a shotgun-toting "mini-boss" leapt on-screen in slow motion (that's how we knew he wasn't an average enemy) and began to hurt us badly. Sully went down and a red icon appeared, a la Gears of War, indicating where our injured comrade was and how long it would take before he bled out.
There's a similar "cry for help" when any of the three players get grabbed by an enemy -- just as you can move around behind them and grab hold, so can they. In this case, a blue icon appears and players must rush to their partner's aid before it's too late.
Leaving the relative safety of a barricade behind, we ran up to him and held Triangle to get our partner back into action. We discovered that, should all three players go down and bleed out, they're respawned at the most recent checkpoint. (The game indicates when you've reached them.)
Naughty Dog's way of handling co-op seems to throw the doors wide open for more DLC missions. |
The next area -- a bar and adjoining courtyard -- housed the most difficult enemies yet. We only survived a bit longer, but it was long enough to take down shield-carrying enemies (then use their shields for ourselves) and ultimately be killed by the second mini-boss, this one carrying a chaingun.
The overall experience was a lot of fun, quite challenging and actually forced us to cooperate -- imagine that! We were told the mission would keep most players busy for a couple of hours, and Naughty Dog's way of handling co-op seems to throw the doors wide open for more DLC missions. NDI couldn't say if there'd be an ultimate payoff for completing the mission or any special Trophies associated with it, but there will (thankfully) be voice chat. You know, so we can give the squeaky wheel on our team a little verbal grease now and then.

Co-op...the ONE thing that people kept saying Uncharted to could have had. Looks like they have pulled it off nicely. Can't wait to get my hands on this come Fall....
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:29PM
Weren't you one of those people ready to boycott the game because it has co-op and multiplayer? Eating your words now I see...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Apr 27th 2009 5:28PM
ummmmmmm never said anything about boycotting dude.....
Just said I hope they dont fuck it up......
MariusElijah (Only on PlayStation 3) @ Apr 27th 2009 12:09PM
So is this split-screen or online co-op?
Hyams @ Apr 27th 2009 12:44PM
Apparently online only. =(
Andrew @ Apr 27th 2009 1:13PM
Crap! No splitscreen? My fiancee and I play games all the time, but there just isn't enough local multiplayer games that suit both our tastes. Uncharted would have been one of those games we played together, but I guess it's going to be a controller passing affair once again (She takes care of platforming and I do the combat).
Hyams @ Apr 27th 2009 1:18PM
Yeah. More games need splitscreen. Online seems to have largely replaced it this gen, though. =(
baby sea tuna @ Apr 27th 2009 1:29PM
Online only co-op is bullshit. Unless it's a game like GTA, Halo, CoD4 that everyone owns, it's rare that anyone on my friends list is ever playing the game that I am at the same time.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Apr 27th 2009 1:36PM
True. I SO miss split-screen play. But, if there's a price drop this summer, I would be seriously tempted to buy a second PS3.
Woz @ Apr 27th 2009 2:03PM
I have the second PS3, it's the second game copy that kills me.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Apr 27th 2009 2:07PM
I hadn't thought of that. DOH!!!
Duke @ Apr 27th 2009 3:35PM
I too wish this had split screen coop. I like to play video games with my wife, but hate the idea of having to get a second copy of the game and another PS3 to do it.
Hedgeson @ Apr 27th 2009 5:17PM
If you have 2 PS3s, rent one copy to try the coop.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Apr 27th 2009 11:54PM
yea i hate that games don't have split screen anymore. i used to go over to my friends house and we would play co-op games (actually got me into the FPS genre) but now i have to lug my PS3 or 360 over to his house and play on his crappy old second TV in order to play co-op in most cases. every now and then, a game like Gears or Army of Two comes along where co-op is the focus or at least a main part and we have TONS of fun with those (we just recently tackled the RE5 co-op).
Jack Spicer @ Apr 29th 2009 9:13PM
Im just glad this isnt DLC like RE5... Funny how they did this but Capcom couldnt add the other "modes" with the game, like it would really bankrupt them if they did.
boots555 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:12PM
Wow that all sounds great. I hope I can play split screen with two players.
Lasse @ Apr 27th 2009 12:14PM
MIND = Blown
Blkant @ Apr 27th 2009 12:25PM
Call me a PS3 fanboy and I'll take pride in that now. But I simply must ask, what excuse is there not to own a PS3 now?
diare33 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:31PM
true... GOTY i think, if not god of war 3 or killzone 2 /which is also PS3 exclusives!
shadowhowl1900 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:34PM
GOTY? dude we arent we done the year, so how can there be a GOTY nominee yet. plus GoW3 is prob coming next year. they (Sony rep.) said by 2010 Q1.
Also there are a lot more games coming like bioshock 2.
JuanDHexen @ Apr 27th 2009 12:35PM
Fanboyism pride;)
Anticrawl @ Apr 27th 2009 12:42PM
The price? Doesn't matter though because I own one. Game looks good, may buy.
diare33 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:54PM
yea, i wrote IF NOT god of war 3.. because it may not be out this year..
and who cares if it not actually gets to be GOTY, it may be, dont ruin this awesome moment!
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Apr 27th 2009 1:34PM
Sweet bejeebus! If you don't own a playstation at this point...I feel sorry for you. I'm with you, Blkant. I'm not trying to unleash the fanboyism here, but...PS3's exclusives are looking fucking awesome!
umm....hello??? @ Apr 27th 2009 4:31PM
actually, I think everyone should have all 3 systems--all of them have their merits and excellent exclusive titles....
shadowhowl1900 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:31PM
is it only online co-op or can i have friend beside me playing at the same. Also can it also be a combination. 2 people with me and 1 online.
Also for this to be fully successful, i hope they implement some sort of profile system. I mean i dont want to keep repeating the same mission with offline coop.
unboring @ Apr 27th 2009 12:32PM
game of the year
Neptune @ Apr 27th 2009 12:36PM
"Rather than shoehorn a second player into an experience already crafted for solo adventure, it's creating a separate side mission designed specifically with two to three players in mind."
Just the way it should be done imo. Co-op won't affect the single player experience and vice-versa.
Eric E @ Apr 27th 2009 12:50PM
Ala shitstorm RE5.
Resistance 1 worked because there was no partner AI if you played alone. RE5 does not work if you want to play alone. R2 doesn't really have co-op in the traditional sense. You can't even really play it offline.
If its possible (w/o screwing the story which is a big part of uncharted thankfully) I prefer R1 co-op.
If not this Uncharted 2/Resistance 2 co-op is better
RE5 should never be used, as Yahtzee said "its really bad when you're running away and more afraid of your AI Partner then the zombies"
Professor Lario @ Apr 27th 2009 1:08PM
Gears 1 and 2, Crackdown, Saint's Row 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 and 2, etc were better because of the inclusion of co-op in the main campaign. I am not saying all games that do campaign co-op are better, but imo the games listed above were better for it.
WiredKnight @ Apr 27th 2009 1:48PM
The way they're doing coop for Uncharted seems like another good solution. On the other hand, I'm pretty tired of designers not wanting to include coop because they can't fit it into the storyline. Some of the most fun we've had in coop was with Halo 1, remember? They didn't bother changing the story or explaining why there's two Spartans. It didn't make sense and no one cared because it was so much fun.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:38PM
Still don't think this was necessary at all, and I'll definitely be skipping it should I choose to buy Uncharted 2. I just hope they don't put online trophies in.
mahouneko @ Apr 27th 2009 1:29PM
They will probably activate the trophies set once the game ships. I mean, they waited this long just to drop the bomb that Uncharted 2 has multiplayer, and multiplayer that is apparently very good from Joystiq's impression, so I don't see a reason why they wouldn't have implemented trophies, especially online trophies.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:35PM
Why are you complaining. The game will cost $60 and I don't understand why you don't want more content. You are either bluffing about wanting the game or you are just weird. How can you not want the most bang for your buck? Joystiq said the single player and the co-op are both high quality work. Please explain...
And oh, if you think I'm a fanboy, I also own an Xbox360. If you need proof, I'll give you my gamertag.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:55PM
Because I don't need another freakin game with deathmatch and co-op. Why do people need to play deathmatch in every single game?
Ashitaka @ Apr 27th 2009 3:06PM
If you don't want to play a deathmatch, then don't play it. It WILL have online trophies, of course, but if you don't like playing it, then don't, so stop complaining.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 28th 2009 3:02AM
Why do you care? No one is forcing you to play death match or co-op. It's there for those who do care and if you don't then don play. Simple as that. Some people will complain about nothing.
JuanDHexen @ Apr 27th 2009 12:39PM
Dam those screens look crazy sick; I can't believe we have a automatic GOTY so early into the year.I will step up and say that Naughty Dog are one of the best developers of all time.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:37PM
So say we all!
QAguy @ Apr 27th 2009 12:42PM
I'm very very very siked for this game...Loved UC:Drakes Fortune, pretty sure I'm going to love this one as well!
Jake5678 @ Apr 27th 2009 12:43PM
I really hope this is split-screen as well...! There's nothing like killing virtual bad guys with your friend sitting in the same couch.
j.howlett @ Apr 27th 2009 12:46PM
so far it seems good. i like the way they separated the co-op like resistance 2.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:40PM
Except Resistance 2 had a sucky single player but an amazing multiplayer. Both modes in Uncharted 3 seem like they be equally good.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:40PM
Woops! *2*
Pyjamarama @ Apr 27th 2009 1:04PM
This takes Uncharted even more on the shooter path, witch for those of you o want another shooter is not a bad thing and it could be another great shooter but for me just have to keep relying on Lara Croft for the only action adventure explore game, witch I love, but which more games would follow.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:50PM
The first Lara Croft game on next-gen console was good. Then the latest one wasn't as good. Personally, I think Lara Croft is past her prime. The game looks good but there are so many problems with the gameplay that I couldn't play it more than 30 minutes.
About Uncharted 2 becoming more of a shooter, how so? Elements from the single player mode like platforming, melaing, and cover are incorporated into the multiplayer mode. Basically, it's like fighting bad guys from the single player mode except the baddies are being controlled by real humans. Does make sense.
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 27th 2009 2:52PM
Man, I can't type today! :0 *meleeing*
ryan @ Apr 27th 2009 1:34PM
They truly are Naughty Gods!
Vcize @ Apr 27th 2009 1:16PM
Damnit, I was so happy when I heard co-op, but so disappointed to read that it's one of those silly "side-story" things.
I don't know why developers feel like the co-op part of a game has to be explained in the story to include it. If you want, just leave the story and cutscenes exactly the way they were and when it flips back to the game have two characters there instead of one, no biggie.
A campaign doesn't have to be designed specifically for co-op to have co-op, just give us the option.
Hyams @ Apr 27th 2009 1:22PM
That's fine for out and out shooters, but not so much for games with more of a focus on platforming and exploration and puzzle solving.
The co-op levels are basically all the sections from the single player game that ND think would work with co-op play (with a few tweeks, of course). It's not hard to extrapolate that the parts not included wouldn't work with two or three players, for whatever reason.
