It's been almost a year and a half since 2K Games announced Mafia II, and several months since we've seen much related to the game. Nevertheless, it's still very much in development -- in fact, during a brief demo 2K recently held in San Francisco, we got a chance to see it played.
Since the original game released on last-gen platforms and PC in 2002, 2K bought its Czech developer, Illusion Softworks, renaming it ... 2K Czech. The studio has not only been working on the technology behind Mafia II, the Illusion Engine, since then, but also one of the first game's standout elements -- the script. Our demo was a single mission out of about two dozen planned for the final game; a game that may seem like a 1950s era Grand Theft Auto at first blush, but actually tries to be very good at a few things, rather than pretty good at everything.
After a very "Behold! Yes, it really looks as good in motion as in screens" unveil, we were introduced to the lead character, Vito, as he walked down the sidewalk in Empire City. Much like the first time we dropped into GTA IV's Liberty City, we were immediately floored by how "alive" it looked. If anything, though, Mafia II's world seems to have less populating it -- people, cars, etc. -- but what's there is already more convincing than what we'd seen in Rockstar's game.
Vito met up with his buddies and the crew cruised through Empire on their way to a hit at the Empire Arms hotel. Every element of the world seemed to nail the era's aesthetic, from clothing to vehicles and architecture. Even the fictional advertising was convincing.
At the hotel, Vito and his partner disguised themselves as maintenance men and made their way to the offices someone who'd obviously done something to get on their bad side in a big way. As our demo's "driver" took the characters through the offices, we noticed people going about their business, some working, some standing to the side chatting. None of them knowing a bomb was about to be planted under the boardroom table.
The actual planting of the explosives was done during a cut-scene; 2K Czech explained that it wants to wrap players up in the overall story, not gameplay minutia.
Hopping onto a window washer's lift, the pair detonated the explosive -- only to realize after reentering the scene that their intended target was still alive (but not for long). Here's where things got Hollywood big. They met heavy resistance on their way back through the offices, but were thankfully well-armed.
Vito fired away with his Tommy gun, showing off the game's micro-level destruction. In what seemed like a nod to Metal Gear Solid 2, the demo-er took out the entire bar, bottles bursting, falling and spinning realistically. The fancy wall of glass bricks we'd seen coming in also had to go, and looked great doing so.
The firefight was also a chance to see the cover system in action. To be honest, it was basic "stick to cover, lean out, shoot" but the overall impressiveness of the characters' animation -- "good" guys and bad -- made the scenes more visceral than in many other games.
We got a brief taste of a car chase after that before being fed a standard line by the developer: that it didn't want to give too much away.
What we saw was enough to get us excited about another mob game, one where there's a strong narrative and very much a right and a wrong way to do things. Overall, it reminded us -- from the perspective of an open-world game with very "directed" action -- of a much better looking (and seemingly playing) American mafia version of Sony's The Getaway. It has a great first game to build off of, though, and a whole lot of personality to spare.

At the time I couldn't decide, but in retrospective Mafia was the better game compared to GTA 3. Slower paced, but with a real, great storyline, cool cutscenes, a very atmospheric city to drive around in, and those extra levels like the ship and the car race and the airport... F*ck the airport was hard.
If you haven't played Mafia yet, I wholeheartedly recommend you get it for a few bucks. Meanwhile, even most Americans shitty PCs should run it.
(the ps2 version wasn't that great)
Protip: Don't patch the game, so you can cheat in the damn hard racing level.

There's a PATCH for the racing level! I basically learned to be a professional driver for that level, you can't rob me of that!
Anyway, I loved the first Mafia. I loved the music for each suburb, I loved being arrested for running red lights, I loved the character animation (esp. their faces) and the way the city evolved over the timeline of the story.
I am really looking forward to this one.

I wouldn't say either is better, as they are pretty different games.
Mafia is a great story, highly immersive, and very realistic. But the actual sandbox elements were a little lacking... the story was everything.
GTA was just an awesome sandbox to play around in. Great fun, funny characters, crazy physics and lots to do. But i doubt anyone played it for the story...

This is rather off topic but since there really hasn't been an article on the UFC game in awhile I just wanted to say that the UFC demo is great. Easily going to give FNR4 a run for it's money. If you have access to it I recommend downloading it. One of the most addicting demos ever. Day one purchase by far.

Yeah, I'm DYING to play this! Will it have multiplayer?
And yes, when I saw the gameplay video The Getaway was the first thing to come to my mind. I was very sad when then announced the PS3 version was canceled. ):

Even know the controls were a big pain in the ass I really liked both games. Of course it misses a working map, stats bar and everything else, it had a nice story and I DON'T KNOW WHY but I did enjoy the gameplay :~

Yeah same, the story practically drove the game, and the whole no HUB (map, crosshair, status bar etc) added to the "cinematic" experience of the game, as the developers wanted the getaway to feel like you were "playing" a movie, and it actually worked well.

This vs Godfather was what I wanted to know as well. Any thoughts on which is better from what you have seen Randy?

Hopefully this is better than The Godfather II.
Once you get over the grab someone and headbutt them mechanic...
It gets old quick.
By the time you beat the game, you never want to play that POS again.
Thankfully it only takes just over 10 hours to finish it.
Mafia II > GF II

LOL seriously? This game will blow away The Godfather. I'm still kinda pissed that they made a game based on that movie. They should have left it as it was.
Mafia 1 was a pretty good game. And I'm sure that this game will improve on the original.

See, I was looking for thoughts from someone who would know this from a factual standdpoint as opposed to just speculation. You can't say "LOL seriously" when you have no idea what the actual game is like.

Actually he's perfectly correct in saying this. If you've played Mafia 1 and The Godfather you'd know that despite Mafia coming out 5 years earlier it still looked better, played better, and had a lot better story. Just look at the videos of either of the new games, and you can see the games aren't even in the same league.

Once again, you talk speculation based on another game. I don't know why it is so hard to understand that you can't tell a fact without having some exposure. Was every Sonic game the same quality? No. So he isn't right about anything if he (or you) doesn't have experience trying the products out. He's assuming.

original Mafia > any GTA
Mafia is much more about the amazing storyline than GTA is about doing plain ole ridiculous things (not that there anything wrong with that). My favorite mission was the sniping one. And damn, I spent maybe a whole 24hr day trying to beat that car race! I definitely recommend playing it.

The original Mafia (PC version) was a technically demanding game, and it was hard as hell in some spots, but I really enjoyed it in the end. It was a great game, and I hope the sequel is better.

It was one of my all time classic top 5 games i ever played. amazing story line, great voice acting, and great graphics very dramatic movie like game. I hardly comment here, how should I put this. Mafia to be had to be the game which had the best mature story line in a game by far. In terms of comparisons, it looked, played tons better than GTA SA which came out like 3 years after.
Plz...dont insult Mafia, which is in my top 3 fav games of all time.
