Marvel vs. Capcom 2 coming to XBLA and PSN this summer, PS3 demo this week
Remember the site rumored to be counting down to an announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network? Marvel's own news site appears to have confirmed what's going to be revealed when the clock hits zero: the game is making a comeback, as hoped.
As revealed in the teaser trailer above, the classic cross-over fighter will hit both systems sometime this summer with online play. The footage isn't the best, but it looks like the game won't be getting a SSFIITHDR style high-def makeover for its return. We'll have more info when Capcom spills its details any minute now ...
Update: As expected, Capcom has made the return of MvC2 official via Capcom Unity. The biggest news: a demo of the game will be available on PSN this week (most likely during the usual update on Thursday, April 30. Christian Svensson, the company's VP of strategic planning and business development, calls this the "definitive version" of the classic fighter, providing some details to back up his claim.
In addition to the already confirmed online play, it's been revealed that the game is based on the Sega Dreamcast release, features HD upscaling and widescreen options, and will support custom soundtracks on both platforms. Also, all 56 characters will be "unlocked" from the beginning. No word yet on a 360 demo, but we've dropped Capcom a line for comment. [PlayStation.Blog confirms the demo is exclusive to PSN.]

Sickening... broken game balance, here it comes again.
Think I'll stick to the original Marvel vs. Capcom on Dreamcast...
Mortifiedocalot @ Apr 27th 2009 11:47PM
"Sickening... broken game balance"
Quoted for truth. Really, playing this game online with people who will act like complete dicks will turn you off to it quickly.
If you think projectile spam in SF4 is bad you will literally cry playing this.
Level 5 @ Apr 28th 2009 7:27AM
Ok yeah guys, MVC2 IS entirely broken and has no balance. So what? It's fun for a great many; demand is why they brought it back for what that's worth. I mean if you want balance and tournament-honed play; start firing e-mails for 3rd Strike or SF2HF. If what they say is true, this is the definitive version after all, with online play. If you even remotely enjoy MVC2, I'm not understanding how you could do yourself wrong with it.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Apr 28th 2009 7:39AM
How could this not be fun online? Allow me to offer a demo...

Given what we know about fighting games and their online component (meaning people often go for the cheesiest characters for their wins), you you really want to face 95% Cable and Jill teams?

"If you think projectile spam in SF4 is bad you will literally cry playing this."
Projectile spam? Is that what you call it when you can't defeat someone's fireball? Maybe it's just that you suck. Try Blanka out and quit your bitchin'. He's made to devour fireball players.
Mortifiedocalot @ Apr 28th 2009 5:39PM
@Sugar Daddy
Good god man, you lack reading comprehension. I've yet to even play SF4 and I occasionally play SF third strike, I'm just saying if you think SF4 is bad when it comes to projectile spam you're going to be in a world of pain when it comes to MvC 2.
Really, MvC 2 is a good and fun game, but online play + broken game + people willing to due anything to win = not fun.
Startlingline117 @ Apr 29th 2009 8:37AM
Hands down, the best fighting game of all time. In fact, I still have my dreamcast plugged in with the game sitting in the disc tray because I still play it to this day.
I have no problem forking over a couple of bucks for this game to have improved graphics and online support. I've been waiting for this for a long time. SF II HD Turbo was great, but this is going to be insane.

Agreed, ampMOD! How could I have missed this news yesterday?! Oh happy fucking day! Holy crap, a shit ton of my buddies are gonna jizz themselves once I tell them!
SoulBlade @ Apr 27th 2009 8:59PM
At least it's getting some kind of filter to deal with the jaggies in HD, but i wonder how that would affect any latency - hopefully it doesn't
RagingStormX @ Apr 27th 2009 11:39PM
I'm with you man.....as happy as I am for this, I can only imagine what lag can do to this fastpasted fighter.
mahouneko @ Apr 28th 2009 4:56AM
Umm, I doubt the filtering will affect latency. For the most part, the visuals are generated on the console itself, not broadcasted to other players. The only information being broadcasted are input commands, sprite locations, hit points and rage/charge meters, which are all discrete information.
giantenemycrab @ Apr 27th 2009 9:00PM
YOU SO PRINGLES WHERE YO CURLY MUSTACHE AT?!
I'll finally be able to play this without shelling out $80+ for the PS2 version at Amazon..
Rob @ Apr 27th 2009 9:29PM
Yes, take that people selling stuff!
WiiFTW @ Apr 27th 2009 9:00PM
Hope those people who were trying to sell MvsC2 on PS2 for $100+ have fun with this announcement.
Now all I need to do is get a PS3/360/
Rob @ Apr 27th 2009 9:26PM
GO MAN GO!
John @ Apr 27th 2009 9:01PM
Dam you Wii and your shitty storage!! i have been looking for this game for years to play on my ps2 but have not been successful and only one for 100 dollars.I am so upset I think I am going to go lay down now..see you guys later.
jahd5000 @ Apr 27th 2009 9:22PM
man not to promote piracy, but i was too. And since there was no way i would pay $100, i just got it from internet, and played it on ps2 amulator, which didnt go that good and fast enough for a figthing game.
Bored Exchange Student @ Apr 27th 2009 9:25PM
fuck wiiware/wii's low storage, psn and xbla! play marvel vs capcom 2 the way it's meant to be played, on a fucking arcade cabinet! i got one in my apartment and it drives the people on my floor crazy! lol but i love it!
MystileArmor @ Apr 27th 2009 10:15PM
@Exchange Student
...and then you woke up,... and realized you're full of shit.
Bored Exchange Student @ Apr 27th 2009 11:05PM
@MystileArmor
ahhhhhhhh! whatever dude. i don't need to explain myself, but i will anyway. i'll try an keep it short.
1. a good friend of mine in states has a family friend who used own a small arcade.
2. she could no longer afford to pay the rent on the place, so she had to close it down.
3. she sold off most her arcade cabinets. old and new.
4. i purchased the old, but in good condition and working, marvel vs capcom 2 arcade cabinet for a very good price. :) :) :)
5. my friend held it for me in his house until i got to the states this year. i paid for it via check through the mail.
6. i have one big problem. HOW AN THE HELL I'M I GOING TO GET THIS SHIT HOME! LOL! i won't be living in america forever. lol. i should have thought of that first. lol oh well.
fuck you btw.
Foetoid @ Apr 27th 2009 11:10PM
YEAH FUCK THE WII'S SHITTY STORAGE..........
Oh wait, my Wii has more storage than my brothers 20gb 360.....god i feel like an IDIOT!
Bored Exchange Student @ Apr 27th 2009 11:26PM
@Foetoid
big fucking deal. the wii has a 32gb flash support now. it's still gimped in some way. lol
hard drives are still better imo and i would much rather a hard drive than flash card.
Confucius @ Apr 27th 2009 11:33PM
Holy crap $100!? This game has been sitting in my ps2 collection for years now.
Foetoid @ Apr 27th 2009 11:32PM
Lol. So it's 'Gimped in some way' Way to prove a point dude. 32gb of storage is plenty with whats available on the Wii. This game could be ported to Wii if they felt like it.
Vidikron @ Apr 28th 2009 1:27AM
Doesn't the Wii still have to load games that are on the cards back into the internal memory before playing? Maybe that's what he's referring to. I've heard the transfer speeds are decent now (they were terrible before) though I haven't tried it myself. Seems like it could be done.
Foetoid @ Apr 28th 2009 1:54AM
You can play the games directly from the SD card, but there is a very short buffering time (like, 2-5 seconds of loading max) before the game opens up. Thats it. I'm not sure if that buffering time is actually copying the game back to the Wii, but it's such a short amount of time that it doesn't matter what its doing or how it's doing it, it still feels like your playing directly from the SD card.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Apr 28th 2009 2:22AM
It temporarily writes the game to the internal flash memory. Once you're done playing, it erases it.
Not exactly a great solution. It's better than nothing, but it's going to cause the flash memory to burn out quicker.
Temidien @ Apr 27th 2009 9:01PM
EPIC WIN!

Oh man I been waiting the longest for this masterpiece..Finally.Those bastards at ebay selling for 100+ can suck a fat one.
stormtrooper190 @ Apr 28th 2009 10:20AM
you can burn it free for the dreamcast why pay $100 if you can get the game and a dreamcast for less than $5 dollars
atrimus @ Apr 27th 2009 9:04PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! YESSSS!!!
Temidien @ Apr 27th 2009 9:04PM
I dunno how, but that trailer made MvC2 uncool. This coming from a long-time fan... -_-
JayFight @ Apr 28th 2009 4:50AM
if you didn't like the video then check out the one on the playstation blog (link in article) the only difference is the song but it just seems to make the video a little cooler
SecretAgentHam @ Apr 27th 2009 9:04PM
knew it! now the question is, XBLA or PSN? hm...perhaps both?
FluxWaveZ @ Apr 27th 2009 9:07PM
Confirmed on both.
VeHeMeNcE @ Apr 27th 2009 9:13PM
FluxWaveZ, I think he meant which console he should get it for since he probably has both....
Kanjou @ Apr 27th 2009 9:20PM
If I had a PS3 I'd get it there. I'm a little too nervous to mod my 360 controller to make the D-Pad a viable option, and it's really the only one I've ever been able to use well enough to be competitive in most fighting games.
SecretAgentHam @ Apr 27th 2009 9:30PM
well looks like i'll be able to play the ps3 version first, and capcom said its the difinitive version. i think my money is spoken for.
this plus Fable 2 DLC is making this summer awesome ( assuming this comes out by the summer)
Joshua @ Apr 27th 2009 11:59PM
They said that this is the definitive version of MvC2, not that the ps3 version is the definitive version
they're going to be exactly the same
that said, ps3 day 1 purchase
tywatson @ Apr 27th 2009 9:05PM
