Steve Wiebe sets Donkey Kong Jr. world record
Steve Wiebe, the lovable protagonist from the documentary The King of Kong, recently became too impatient to wait until E3 to crush a classic gaming high score. Twin Galaxies, the unofficial scorekeepers of global gaming records recently announced that Wiebe had set a new high score of 1,139,800 for Donkey Kong Jr., surpassing the previous record of 1,033,000 set by Ike Hall. Meanwhile, our high score on Donkey Kong Jr. Math goes untouched, as it has remained for nearly two decades. Bring it on, teacher man.

Watching someone grind Donkey Kong JR through the night isn't exactly exciting... incredible... but not exciting.

Congrads Steve, seen your recent doc. vs mitchell high score donkey kong jr. and I think your the real champ, for someone to do it in public with people standing behind and and a film crew was awesome....not to send in a tape that could be tarnished is not the way to go....I know that that "jesus" billy fellow is scared to challenge u one on one anywhere, anytime in this universe....
keep up the good work and your
a good man with a good wife
and family...

Badass. We just watched the documentary a few days ago and everyone was cheering for him followed by boos towards Billy Mitchell (that's his name right?). One of these days the two of them need to duke it out side-by-side, none of these tapes and crap that keep being sent in.

It's come to pass that KoK is a slightly skewed version of actual events (look for behind the scenes documentary stuff on youtube about the movie), since the movie BM and SW are pretty close and I think BM is the current DK record holder again, it's switched hands a couple times since the movie.

Someone needs to give this guy a SNES / Genesis for god's sake... he's living in the past!
Cephas @ Apr 28th 2009 12:06AM
Genesis does what Nintendon't!
Jay @ Apr 27th 2009 7:31PM
Lol Donkey Kong Jr. Math... Well glad he beat the record.
Xenokai @ Apr 27th 2009 7:37PM
Great Job Wiebe! I really hope you beat Billy Mitchell for you King Kong title at E3. When i wacthed kings of kong i thought the people int he movie was just actors but later found out it was really a REAL documently and billy is truely a huge a hole.

Did you read the article in which he was portrayed poorly? The editors made him seem like an asshole, but he's not. He's actually pretty cool, just upset that someone would go as far to humiliate him in a major motion film.
Kinda sad.
Pip @ Apr 30th 2009 3:52PM
Was the video of him sitting at the table acting like a jerk fake or something? They had entire segments of him being a clown that could not be possibly taken out of context. Sure, I could believe they may have cut scenes of him more to make him out worse than he was, but there are some solid shots of him talking non-stop being a total kook.

Go Steve! Now back to duel Billy Mitchell!
pprkprkprk @ Apr 27th 2009 8:05PM
BEAT THAT BILLY MITCHELL!!!! Next: Donkey Kong 3??? Nah, most likely Donkey Kong Jr. Math...
Gally @ Apr 27th 2009 8:24PM
Good for him. He deserves a win, finally.
Saria the Cat @ Apr 27th 2009 8:25PM
Yay Steve Wiebe! I love this man and want the best for him.
Jon @ Apr 27th 2009 8:36PM
After watching king of Kong , i felt for him .. good job ! i love the part where the kid has to go potty
Martin @ Apr 27th 2009 9:02PM
I'm happy for Steve, that he got the new world record. After playing Donkey Kong and all of it's variants for a while, these scores and the players that achieve them are just surreal.
For all of you that are Steve Wiebe fans and Mitchell haters, please please please do not base that solely on the "documentary" King of Kong. If that's your opinion after reading unbiased commentary from Mitchell regarding the film, as well as many others such as Walter Day and Robert Mruczek, then I'd consider it well informed. Otherwise, it's based on nothing more than a movie obviously biased against Mitchell and for Wiebe.
quietIdentity @ Apr 27th 2009 9:18PM
Biased or not, that guy sucked big time. Nothing he could say bar a full length movie dedicated to how he was framed as being a douchebag would let me believe that guy was alright. Seriously big dildo smuggler.
Christ-ian @ Apr 27th 2009 9:43PM
Just look at my tie.
There's your answer.
modified @ Apr 28th 2009 4:04AM
"If that's your opinion after reading unbiased commentary from Mitchell"
How is a guy defending himself not biased?
Mitchell has Walter Day in his pocket too so anything he says is just as trustworthy.
Go read this:

Editing can only go so far to make you appear to be something you are not. Mitchell is clearly an egotistical douche.
Martin @ Apr 28th 2009 4:29AM
"How is a guy defending himself not biased?"
That's a valid point, and it was poor wording on my part.
And thanks for that link, I'll probably read through Jason Scott's analysis tomorrow. I'm way too tired to process it right now.
Cal @ Apr 27th 2009 9:15PM
has he been working out?
BILLY MITCHELL @ Apr 28th 2009 10:43AM
I BILLY MITCHELL THINK THIS IS A FAKE. I WILL MAIL IN MY HOME VIDEO RECORDING OF ME BEATING THIS SCORE NEXT WEEK.
ajtwist @ Apr 28th 2009 8:40PM
I like how he's rockin' an All Games shirt.
john william @ Apr 29th 2009 1:09PM
Mitchell may be a douche, but that movie was more reality tv than documentary, as entertaining as it was.
Anyway, Wiebe getting the hi score on DK jr is kinda like a marathon runner winning the gold in speed walking.

To Steve, u rock, absolutely!
To Billy, I have never seen a more self-humiliating pathetic man as u.
