Considering Backwards Compatibility has been axed from the PS3, I don't really see the incentive in doing this... Unless you have an extra PS2 laying around.

Some people don't care much for backwards compatibility.

There are also people like me, who are fortunate to have it, though purely just to have it. I can't remember the last time that I've completed a PS2 game. I have yet to pump in more than three hours into GOW 2 since it released.

I waited to buy a BC PS3 and bought the MGS 4 80 GB PS3 for $500 and I dont find myself EVER playing any of my PS2 games. I rarely ever touch my PS2 games anymore but at first I did use it alot to play PS2 games because I didnt have many PS3 games. With the line up of games coming out BC is pointless especially when most of us already HAVE a PS2 and if not why not buy one used. It kinda bugs me when people complain about price and lack of BC when your buying a current gen system.

@InFaMoUs1-:
Well, if you just sold back your PS2, you wouldn't have one any more... unless you had more than one to begin with.

Add to that the requirement that you trade in 3 PS2 GAMES as well... hell, my PS2 plus any 3 games are worth more than $100 to get back; no deal.

@JuanDHexen: No, the Xbox was max'd from the start. It ran at 768 MHz and had the cripples that people have already described-- it's a 768 MHz computer; whereas both GameCube and ps2 had unique architecture. Let's understand why ps2 has remained King: it only ran at 299 MHz, but it had two baby cell processors (which could only run machine-level-code-- very fast, but very hard to program-- however, this was the beginning of parallel processing on consoles, something Gamecube and Xbox did not have; even X360 doesn't have it, but rather 3-core multi-threading-- the ps3 is a logical successor to the ps2's amazingness with 7 actual co-processors, mini powerPCs with their own memory-- for true parallel processing-- if you can program it, as numerous great developers are finding out (Naughty Dog, Insomniac, and those people who made Killzone 2...)), the 2 processors could be configured to handle various things like anti-aliasing, if desired-- like in Ratchet and Clank games-- because ps2 didn't have a built-in anti-alias; still, you could always program it, if you were good enough. Rockstar used the ps2's built-in ps1 chips for the radio in their Grand Theft Auto games. Neither xbox or gamecube had such configurable extra chips. And let's not forget the ps2's bizarre 128-bit-wide data path. Developers learned after a couple years that you could dump streams to this and watch it fly. You wanna see Xbox up against ps2? Watch the third Midnight Club, Remix. They're identical, yet Xbox CPU runs at well more than twice the speed of ps2-- and this is Rockstar-- this game pushes both machines to their limits. So yeah mad props to Gamecube, I read about how well the system was designed, much like an Apple, and when developers used it's potential it could trump ps2 and xbox (I think it ran at about 450 MHz), but I felt the system was hampered by poor storage media and even worse control-- which brings another point about ps2-- the ps2, with it's extra processors, always had great gameplay if the developers coded it, because they could load things off onto either of the two configurable extra processors. But Gamecube didn't have that and while some games were slightly prettier, they didn't always perform nearly as well-- felt like 30 fps control with 30 fps framerate, while the ps2 tended to give 60 fps control and either 30 or 60 fps framerate. And in the end, it's about playability, isn't it? So that's why ps2 still trumps, and why it's a legend, even though when it first came out it was notoriously hard to program for.

@Beloved Console:

This is a fight that has occurred many, many times. While the PS2 is a surprisingly powerful machine, it does not exceed the power of the GC or Xbox. Far from it. In almost every game that was multi-platform, the Gamecube and Xbox versions were superior. One that comes to mind is Soul Calibur 2. Just because Midnight Club 3 runs identically on both machines does not mean that the PS2 is as powerful, it just means that the game was likely ported up from the PS2.

That being said, I do agree that the PS2 could do some amazing stuff in the hands of talented developers. You could also argue that for the other systems. The Saturn was very similar to the PS2 in some ways, yet proved even MORE difficult to develop for. You could call it dual-core, I suppose.

Anyway, I still think that had the GC gotten more developer support, and had more storage to draw from, it would have been considered the most powerful console, hands-down. Metroid Prime may be one of the most technically impressive games of the last generation, and makes Halo and its ilk look plain in comparison.

Well in a lot of ways that is a good deal. I'd love to get $100 off a PS3.

Though trading in my PS2 for a PS3 that isn't backwards compatible? I think not. I like my PS2 collection.

And after touting the fact that I never had any problems with my PS2 when my Xbox 360 has been a nightmare, it's even harder to let it go.

PROTIP: all games are worth more than $1, and the worse the game, the more likely it will (eventually) become a rare collectible.

You, sir, have earned a +1; and I did get the joke.

For the uninitiated, he, means take a PS2 and a PSOne and you've got a PS3.

His joke about 2 GameCubes duct taped together was a reference to the Wii which is equal in power to a Xbox or... 2 GameCubes duct taped together.

Wow Papa Midnight, your information is so hopelessly incorrect it's almost a joke. Yes the GC had lower clock speeds than the Xbox 1, but thanks to faster architecture, faster ram, and coppermine CPU, a few GC games looked better than any Xbox games (Rogue Leader, Twilight Princess, Both Primes etc). On paper, the Xbox 1 was faster, in reality, they were very very close, with the Xbox only just nudging ahead. The only reason a lot of GC games didn't look anywhere near as good as Xbox games was due to the paltry 1.8gb storage on the GC mini-dvds meaning a lot of games were compressed and ugly. If the Wii is 2x the power of the GC, it's also about 1.8x the power of the Xbox 1, not the same power. Its amazing how misinformed people are. I'll go hunting one day for the article that proves i'm right, it has tons of real tests done and tesitimonials from developers.

@Foetoid

Being a ps2 guy and all I have to say that Xbox was by far the most powerful system and was not used to it's full potential not even close to full unlike ps2 and Gamecube which were max out.If a developer were to make a game right now for Xbox it would look similar to a 360/ps3 game which gets me thinking why they cancel it.

Come on Juan. You can just come here and say 'Xbox 1 is way faster' without links, information or proof. The Xbox 1 was simply off-the-shelf PC parts, a Geforce 3 Gpu, a Pentium 3 CPU and 64mb of DDR Ram slapped together. The GC was a highly refined custom system with much faster ram and memory bandwidth. Read the links i posted and do some research. Being a Ps2 boy last gen, i guess you didn't get to experience the graphically incredible GC games that left Xbox 1 games in the dust.

Yea, I suppose you're right. Now that I think about it a price drop during E3 would be senseless considering the fact that that's when their going to making a LOT of announcements. However to throw in a price drop during E3 along with all the gaming announcements would be money. Many of the games they're announcing during E3 won't be released until much later on in the year (Septemberish?), which is when according to Hyams they'll be doing the price drop. With the new announcements they'll get the last suckers to pony up for a PS3 despite those games that have been announce are yet to be released. As when the games are actually released I would expect some of them to be systems sellers and in combination with a price drop would definitely boost sales in the last quarter of the year.

Probably.

They'd never announce a price drop 4 months in advance. Heck, they wouldn't announce one more than a week in advance.

Doing so would mean console sales would drop down to almost 0 until the cut occurs.
