Probably because they make more off of the PS2 than the PS3. Gamestop is sneaky like that.

Hmm, I'm not convinced. They're basically giving you a $100 in store credit, and can only then sell the old PS2 for $50 max.

They're basically willing to lose $50 per used PS2 traded in, in order to drive up PS3 sales.

Or something. These sorts of things are hard to work out.

I'd say watch somewhere like slickdeals.net for when Dell does it's 20% off Electronics and Accessories. It has been happeneing almost every week recently and you could get a PS3 for 340, no trades necessary. Or a 360 Pro or a Wii for 199.

For anyone that is on the fence about getting a PS3 without BC, you really aren't going to miss your classic PS2 games THAT much.

I have (a dead) launch 60 GB PS3 and I haven't touched a PS2 game in about two years, although I still have 1/4 of my original collection (Shadow of the Colossus, GoW, Final Fantasy X/XII, Kingdom Hearts I/II, etc;).

Once the next price drop comes for the PS3 (crosses fingers for E3 09!), don't let the lack of BC hold you back.

This line of thinking might make sense for people who don't own *any* current gen consoles yet. But for those who own a 360, does it really make any sense to retire a zillion exclusives in exchange for half a dozen (if that, depending on taste) new ones?

@HitNrun

umm...
did you just suggest the ps3 has 6 exclusives? Unless its a bakers dozen, then 6.5ish....
You are dense if you think there are that few...
Just checking...
Even if your tastes are different, there are plenty of 'different' exclusives on PS3 to suit your needs.
Not counting the PSN.
IMO PS3 has way better exclusives. The 360 has wet dreams just thinking of them.

While I can see people enjoying this deal, I'll probably pass. There's slot of good ps2 games I want to play and giving up my ps2 Is something I'd probably regret.

Besides, I've been buying more ps2 games lately than I am buying 360 or woo games. Mostly because they are so cheap.

Yeah, cause ALL Xbox 360 games are better than ALL PS2 games. It's a wonder we haven't modified our consoles into makeshift flails, what with their unsightly corded controllers. ....*Sigh*, I'll stop there, this is pointless flame....

Yeah, something's gotta be up. Gamestop wouldn't do this unless they're is money in it.

So, they give you $100.

They sell your used PS2 for what....$60? Maybe?
I guess they're betting that the money they get from selling your 3 used game > $40.

Which I guess it might be if your games are persona 4 or FF 12 or GoW series or GT4. But seems like they have something up their sleeves.

Maybe they want us to buy PS3 games so we can sell them to them so they can resell for higher profit per game than PS2 games? Dunno.

Correction: Gamestop wouldn't do this unless they *think* there's money in it.

Your theory about PS3 games is probably right, though. The PS2 market is (from their POV) either dead or dying. PS3 games, on the other hand, sell for a boatload more actual dollars (even if the %s are about the same) when sold used.

Also, PS2 games take up as much shelf space as the other 8 or so consoles combined. Just look next time you're there. Those are three big incentives to get people to trade in their PS2s for PS3s.

I rent, so I don't have a library that I'm attached to. Still, I like having the option available, just in case I missed a game for the PS2 that I'd regret not playing. Besides, not quite enough platform exclusives to warrant a purchase just yet. That'll be when FFXIII comes out.

If Gamestop is taking a loss, it's not that much of a loss, and it's only a loss in the short-term.

$100 for a PS2 and three games. Not sure of the specifics, but there's only a five dollar price difference between the trade-in on a large PS2 and a slim PS2. They'll sell either one of those for $70 or $80 (and believe me: people still buy them like they're going out of style, at least around here).
The games, $2 or more are going to sell for at least $10 or $11. So three games at the most-likely bare minimum of $10 are going to be worth, at the very least, $30. Combine that with the $70 or $80 system and off your one trade in, they've made that $100 back at the very least.

But they've got potential customer loyalty. Sell an Edge card to someone with a larger trade-in (higher-end games or who plans on buying used), and they've got you by the balls for the next year. Sell some used games or third-party accessories along with that system (that happen to be made by Gamestop), and that's pure profit. Get some reserves on some PS3 games and the people have to go back there to pick it up. Give the average slack-jawed yokel buying the system because "they seen it on the teevee" along with "that commercial with the guns and the dude diving through the window" the greatest customer service on earth and paint yourself up to make yourself sound like the video game be-all-end-all and they'll come marching back in every time to find out what game they should get or "what that new Madden play like."

This would be a good deal if Dell wasn't selling the 80gb PS3's for $300-$319 every couple weeks without having to trade anything in at all.

Sweet. I can benefit greatly from this deal. I have a fat launch PS2, that just died last month. A DS2 controller that constantly goes forward, no matter what.... And I am sure I can find games worth $2, but... this IS GAMESTOP we are talking about, maybe I can't.
My dad has wanted a ps3 for a while. Timing is perfect!

I bought a MGS PS3 for the backwards compatibility and have to say that I've gotten a lot of use out of the PS2 functionality. The Megaten games alone make it worthwhile, although the huge library of quality games and a few future releases (although there are a lot less than there were last year) don't hurt the equation. I have a PS2 sitting around (one of the launch ones, at that), but it still works like a charm and I use it when gaming on my non-hd television (which is less and less, since I have backwards compatibility and the PS3 does a good job upscaling).

Plus anything you trade to Gamestop that is over the $2 trade-in credit is likely to re-sell for more than $20 and it's easy to see where the profit comes in. Even if a PS2 is resold for $70 (taken off their website as the current used price for the larger system), 2 games that sell for $20 make the money back in no time. Persona 4 sells for 34.99 used, Madden '08 sells for 12.99 and Soul Calibur III sells for 14.99. That smells like profit to me. It also wouldn't surprise me if Gamestop IS expecting a price drop in the near future and is deciding to capitalize while they still can. All in all I'd have to say "No Deal".

You people aren't thinking about the obvious. They're likely to sell some new/used games in the same sale as the PS3, and they may sell accessories/warranties as well.

PS2 = ~$70
3x games = ~$10 each or $30
maybe 2x new or used games ~$20 profit each or $40
extra controller $15 profit or so
So there's $155 for a total of $55 profit. Of course this disregards overhead and processing expenses, but it's still a positive move for them in a big way.

Once you find out that you can't play any of your old games on the new PS3, then you'll trade those in for additional profit. All around it's a pretty big win, and that's before you realize that they already make money off of selling the console for $400 (not much, but everything counts).
