Marvel vs. Capcom 2's graphical options compared

Producer Rey Jimenez showed off the three sprite filtering options in a Capcom Unity blog post: classic (no filtering), smooth ("based off of 2X Bilinear filtering, but with some tweaks") and crisp ("based of off 3X Bilinear filtering, but it was also tweaked heavily") You can see the first screens of the game in our gallery (or in 1080p on Capcom Unity).
Jimenez also introduced two expert MvC2 players, Magnetro and MikeZ, who thoroughly tested the game to find bugs that most of us wouldn't notice -- including bugs that were present in the PS2 and Xbox releases of the game.

These emulation filters always look like someone smears vasoline on the sprites to me :x
Emperor_Den_Den @ Apr 28th 2009 10:51AM
dood u so robbed me of being first lulz
Sturat @ Apr 28th 2009 10:58AM
I'm so glad they're using optional filters instead of ugly redrawn sprites!
heypaul @ Apr 28th 2009 11:01AM
You're right, but it's probably for the better that they don't bother with an HD remix. Remember how long SSFIITHDR took? Didn't it come out the same week as SFIV in Europe, despite being not much more than a cosmetic facelift? That's an embarassment for the developers and an agonizing wait for the fans. And in the end, the sputtery original number of animation frames marginalized the redrawn HD sprites anyway. I think Capcom and fans alike will agree that not bothering with too many upgrades is the best solution, granted that Capcom spend plenty of time optimizing the netcode for such a fast-paced game.
Arrowned @ Apr 28th 2009 11:31AM
@heypaul
This is especially true in light of the fact that MvC2has 56 characters and, thus, an unbelievably number of sprites that would have to be redrawn. If they HD Remix'd this, it would take 4 years to come out.
DeepFriedSushi @ Apr 28th 2009 12:29PM
i was kinda baffled why the ps3 version is getting a demo but the xbox isnt then i realized something.
xbox marketplace doesnt have demos for xbla games only trials which can be upgraded to the full version. A demo wont come out on marketplace until the full version is out. but capcom can be very persuasive so it may come out regardless of the rules. (aka bionic commando size upgrade)
Lars @ Apr 28th 2009 1:27PM
I agree. The smooth one looks horrible. It makes me feel like I need to rub my eyes. Much prefer the classic option.
It's not limited to these type of games either. A lot of games go crazy with anti-aliasing these days (especially on 360 it seems), and it bugs me to no end.
The Baron @ Apr 28th 2009 4:43PM
Games aren't made by one guy in a basement drawing all the sprites. Hell, even if they are, like Braid, they're still not that insane to do.
Emperor_Den_Den @ Apr 28th 2009 10:51AM
see I'm pro choice not pro death said capcom :D
NoughtSoClever @ Apr 28th 2009 11:27AM
in this analogy, is prolife the same as an HD remix?
Nexas @ Apr 28th 2009 10:51AM
Looks good. Not HD good, but for a game it's age it looks nice
mosdef @ Apr 28th 2009 10:54AM
SO F'ing HYPED FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lookhappy @ Apr 28th 2009 10:53AM
Ooh blurry!
The "crisp" filter is ok though
Vidikron @ Apr 28th 2009 1:11PM
Smooth is way too blurry, but Crisp has potential. I'll need to see it in motion to decide whether to go with it or Classic.
Night Elve @ Apr 28th 2009 10:55AM
Hey Capcom I presume you will likely charge about 15 ~ 20 Dlls for this game, what about redrawing all the sprites as you did with the gorgeous SF HD :)
That's would make me a happy panda!
NoughtSoClever @ Apr 28th 2009 11:29AM
can you wait another 2 years? I say just go 3d with it. Tatsunoko V Capcom was pretty fast paced. With some improvements, a MvC2 with 3d chars (or a 3 if it's coming) could be just as fast and look just as nice while being less taxing on the art department and dev time/costs.
THMercury @ Apr 28th 2009 12:07PM
@ NoughtSoClever: If it was 3d, then it wouldn't be marvel vs. capcom 2. Maybe for #3...
Sabi @ Apr 28th 2009 12:24PM
Capcom doesn't own the rights to produce anymore, so they can't redraw sprites, plus if they had rights and they did redraw sprites it would take a long time, considering there are 50+ characters. and many specails (much more sprites per character than sfIIthdr
I think capcom should pair with other companies and make a custom fighter like mUGEN with online capabilities and PS3/XBOX support, now that would be sweet, and extreme wishful thinking
Punishment4Gluttons @ Apr 28th 2009 10:56AM
I likes my graphix like I likes my chicken. Crispy.
Darkwun @ Apr 28th 2009 10:59AM
a man after my own heart.......
btw anyone feel like donating a ps3 to me for demo purposes on the 30th??
Night Elve @ Apr 28th 2009 11:05AM
I like my women like my whisky twelve years old and mixed up with coke.
=P
Einhanderkiller @ Apr 28th 2009 11:30AM
I LIKE MY CHICKEN SMOOTH AND CLASSIC.
Orex @ Apr 28th 2009 10:58AM
DEMO DEMO DEMO DEMO! CANT WAIT, IM STILL HYPED FROM HEARING THIS HOURS AGO LOL!
IM SHIT HAPPY I DONT HAVE TO EBAY THIS! EBAY SELLERS CAN SUCK WALLSBALLS
[MVSC2 caps lock ftw]
Orex @ Apr 28th 2009 10:59AM
Ill pay £15 for this if i have to O.O
Worsel @ Apr 28th 2009 10:59AM
While I love the look of SSF2THD Im actually glad Udon is not doing the graphics cause it took them what, 2 YEARS to redraw 17 characters? Dont know how long it would take them to do 56 characters in MvC2...
Orex @ Apr 28th 2009 11:05AM
+1
PN04 @ Apr 28th 2009 11:05AM
Ugh, why do they even bother with these filters, they're disgusting and blurry. They dont improve the graphics in anyway shape or form.
Evi1d33d @ Apr 28th 2009 11:20AM
That's why it's optional. A lot of people will opt for the 'crisp' though.
Nigeria @ Apr 28th 2009 11:05AM
I don't suppose bugs equals re-balancing? Cable's viper beam immediately comes to mind.
Evi1d33d @ Apr 28th 2009 11:14AM
It needs Super 2xSaI and Super Eagle filters (emu players should understand this).
Batzarro @ Apr 28th 2009 1:09PM
I would always use those, if I used emulators. Which I probably don't...
AtomicPlayboy @ Apr 28th 2009 11:45PM
Nonsense. HQ2X all the way.
AsherR @ Apr 28th 2009 11:15AM
Servbot! Woooooo!
DangerMouse @ Apr 28th 2009 11:16AM
I figured they'd do something like that. There's not a whole lot more they can do with old, low-res sprites. I think it looks fine, but it'd be even better if they could add a scanline filter, as well.
acme @ Apr 28th 2009 11:18AM
wheres my scanline option?
xbox420king @ Apr 28th 2009 11:21AM
Cant wait to play this shit online. My team of Cable, iron man and wolverine will rage supreme
stormtrooper190 @ Apr 28th 2009 11:27AM
dreamcast 2 FTW
NoughtSoClever @ Apr 28th 2009 11:34AM
Is that anything like reigning supreme?
JDHexen @ Apr 28th 2009 11:40AM
+1
Sega shall rise again.
Persian @ Apr 29th 2009 10:37AM
So they talk about fixing glitches.....but they are leaving Infinites and the Juggernaught glitch intact?
wtf?
acefondu @ Apr 28th 2009 11:37AM
I like the Crisp. But I'll wait till it's on my TV to make the final choice.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 28th 2009 11:43AM
Shouldn't they be offering bicubic filtering as an option?
They probably should use a pop count block filter as an option too. Just grab it out of SCUMMVM.
JDHexen @ Apr 28th 2009 11:43AM
Looks great and the price is right, but my only complaint is that I wanted to unlock everything on my own;)
zuburi @ Apr 28th 2009 1:00PM
Same here! I was looking forward to doing that.
furious @ Apr 28th 2009 12:00PM
Norimaro! If only...
sk3 @ Apr 28th 2009 12:05PM
So, when will Capcom VS Snk 2 be released for DLC? :)
Mr. L @ Apr 28th 2009 12:42PM
I hope the different filtering options dont effect the framerate. Oh, and one more thing:
Rocket Punch!
Web Throw!
Berserker Barrage!
Knives @ Apr 28th 2009 1:51PM
BARZARKAR BOORAAJ
Screw this, though. I don't care about production time, I'm either buying it as MVC2HD or I'm not. No point in getting a game I owned for the Xbox without a proper graphics upgrade, except maybe for the customizable soundtrack which was, in the original, utterly abysmal.
Mr. L @ Apr 28th 2009 2:03PM
I bet you're the kind of person that walks into a store, grabs a sales clerk, and proceeds to walk him around the store pointing out everything you're not going to buy and why. No one cares that you don't care.
Batzarro @ Apr 28th 2009 1:05PM
I'm going with smooth. After years of it in mugen, it just makes sense to me.
Offtopic, though, maybe they should add Apocalypse, Onslaught, Mecha Gouki and Norimaro.
