Red Steel 2 goes to the Wild West, adds MotionPlus support
Red Steel 2 is real ... and it's not really what we were expecting. The June 2009 issue of Nintendo Power will feature Ubisoft's Wii-exclusive sequel, and the cover reveals two things:
[Thanks, Fernando Rocker]

- MotionPlus makes wielding the sword feel "as real as you'd always dreamed!"
- Red Steel 2 seems to take place in the Wild West ... with swords. WTF?

I thought Red Steel 2 was canceled...?
Marco @ Apr 28th 2009 6:00PM
You thought wrong, son.
Latin_Trident @ Apr 28th 2009 7:44PM
red steel canceled? Now that is a funny joke!
@tomic @ Apr 28th 2009 7:54PM
What you're thinking of is the original concept for the sequel. It took place in a similar setting as the original along with some more surreal stages added in. THAT was canceled in favor of going in a different direction.
Which is western apparently.
Weird, but interesting.
ColorblindMonk @ Apr 28th 2009 5:55PM
Looks like a Wii Samurai Gunman.
Snakku @ Apr 28th 2009 7:24PM
Looks crazy fun !!

WRE @ Apr 28th 2009 10:02PM
Seriously? The joke about it NOT BEING AVAILABLE IN STORES NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAVE didn't sink in? Really? Huh.
Marco @ Apr 28th 2009 5:58PM
More like the Wild East.

A Rising Zan remake?

I WISH.

I hope they add some wild west steampunk elements... and I hope that they use graphics similar to the artwork, kinda like the Prince of Persia game...
Ubisoft has two chances to prove that they can make more than Petz games: the Rabbids game and this one.
They just need to use a good engine, and have a small bounding box to aim, like Metroid Prime 3 or The Conduit, and not a huge bounding box like the first rushed Red Steel.
At least the artwork looks way more appealing than the original setting.
Mr Khan @ Apr 28th 2009 6:10PM
There's certainly no reason to believe that they haven't majorly improved it by now. Most or all of the issues regarding the original have been resolved since. Motion plus fixes the sword combat, they can learn from the various Wii FPSes that have come since about pointer issues, they should have better understanding of Wii graphics architecture (and not just shoehorn UE2 on there), and online play is now available on the platform
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Apr 28th 2009 6:17PM
It shouldn't be too hard for it to be better than the first one, hopefully it turns out to be a good game. I still feel horrible for giving the original Red Steel to my brother for Christmas 2006.
Foetoid @ Apr 28th 2009 7:38PM
If i was your brother i would have leaned back and slapped you with the copy of Red Steel, demanding something 1st party.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Apr 28th 2009 10:46PM
Well they were already getting Warioware and Zelda and some other games, Red Steel was a horrible choice, but there weren't many other things to choose from.
rTwelve @ Apr 28th 2009 6:03PM
"If Red Steel 2 turns out anything like the Charles Bronson / Toshiro Mifune mashup Red Sun, it should be the best game ever made."
Or it could be Shanghai Noon.
Mr Khan @ Apr 28th 2009 6:13PM
are we implying there is something wrong with Shanghai Noon?
Matt @ Apr 29th 2009 1:05AM
Or it could be Sukiyaki Western Django!

i was thinking that too

The new SMT and Nostalgia are in there too. :D
liamario @ Apr 28th 2009 6:13PM
Unfortunately it's on the wii.
Mr Khan @ Apr 28th 2009 6:17PM
yes, if only they put it on that one console where sword fighting games are so awesome and realistic.
JXCgunrunna @ Apr 28th 2009 6:58PM
yea too bad it wasnt on the 360... now where at on the 360 controller should i plug that wii motion plus into?
the wii is perfect for swords, guns, and point and click games and this one has 2 of the 3 so if they do it right, it will be worth picking up
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Apr 28th 2009 7:03PM
I'm sorry I have to ask but have you ever held steel in your hand? Even as a child, and pretended to sword fight? MOST of what makes swordfighting fun is the tactical response, not slicing your arms in air. So in that regard, what system does do sword fighting?
I mean I'm not bashing a game just because it's Wii, but slicing your hand through the air is a far cry from realistic sword gameplay.
Gun Barrier @ Apr 28th 2009 7:35PM
If you want sheppy, you can put on 5 pound wrist weights and turn the rumble and speaker functions on.
Alex @ Apr 28th 2009 7:44PM
This year year is turning out to be awesome for Wii! Red Steel 2 is looking great!
Reader @ Apr 28th 2009 8:23PM
Come on now, I hate the Wii as much as anyone else, but this game would be shit anywhere else. Its only advantage is that it uses the Wii motion deal.
Of course we're not going to get realistic sword fighting on a console (at least for now), but the Wii is mildly /more/ realistic (especially if the Motion Plus works well, still haven't tried it).
uncle jesse @ Apr 29th 2009 10:30AM
@ Sheppy:
Did you seriously just say that? Really?! No slicing your hands through the air isn't like slicing a real sword. So you are saying that pushing a button is the same firing a gun? Or pushing up on a D-pad is the same as jumping in real life? Or holding down a button is the same as putting your foot on the gas pedal? Shall I continue?
Mr Khan @ Apr 28th 2009 6:12PM
They're also looking at The Legendary Starfy in this issue. Perhaps i should buy this one
Ubisoft is building quite a respectable lineup for Wii for late 2009 also, between this, Rabbids Go Home, and TMNT: Smash Up
Moptimus Slime (Ziggy played Guitar Hero, but not Smash Hits) @ Apr 28th 2009 6:34PM
Im having trouble seeing what your avatar is doing there. Care to explain?
Mr Khan @ Apr 28th 2009 6:50PM
Which avatar? Jamie from Megas XLR frozen in his immortal expression of "Monkey thing?!?" The Hanna-Barbera logo that ran at the very first second of every SWAT Kats episode, or Sogeking's noble pose from his introductory song on the Sea Train in One Piece?
I think i'll change my name to the "Fantastical Avatar Menagerie"
Rob Accomando @ Apr 28th 2009 6:19PM
so if I swing the wiimote super fast like I'm having a seizure, I can't lose?

'MotionPlus makes wielding the sword feel "as real as you'd always dreamed!"'
Fool me once...
Having tried a demo of the swordfighting in Wii Sports Resort, I can say that it won't be as real as you'd always dreamed, but it'll probably be much better than the original Red Steel.
Mysterion @ Apr 28th 2009 7:28PM
you did?
why didn't you like it?
igetgames @ Apr 28th 2009 10:14PM
Wii Sports Resort? I only tried the swordfighting portion. Like most Wii waggle schemes, you can either flail the Wii Remote wildly or just flick your wrist slightly to get the same effect. The winner is the person who can flail or flick the fastest, to knock the opponent out of the ring. If you hold the Remote steady, and twist and turn it slowly then the sword reacts very close to how a real sword would. But once you start doing heavy chops and swings, it feels like any other sword simulation on the Wii. MotionPlus seemed to help with those balanced movements, so maybe if RS2 is still using Samurai-style fighting it'll work out as they intend it. I'd just be wary of the "it's just like a real sword!" claims.
liamario @ Apr 28th 2009 6:21PM
Just a good console will do
Moptimus Slime (Ziggy played Guitar Hero, but not Smash Hits) @ Apr 28th 2009 6:32PM
which is why its on the Wii.
To be honest, I'm failing to see what you're trying to get at here
Josh @ Apr 28th 2009 7:08PM
No, you know what he's getting at, and he's just being a douchebag.
ArchGamer @ Apr 30th 2009 10:15PM
You mean like the accident prone 360 or the expensive whore like the PS3?
DeoWulf @ Apr 28th 2009 6:36PM
Lots of Western games I'm seeing recently... I kind of like it... the Old West has been neglected too long in culture.
liamario @ Apr 28th 2009 6:39PM
Contrary to popular belief, the wii isn't that innovative. Apart from the poorly realised controller that is. Any title released on the console is wasted as it is unlikely that the game will sell in any decent level of numbers. This is also quite concerning when you consider that it has a humongous install base. I suppose the point i'm getting at and which reflects quite well my issue with the system is that 3rd party developers would be better off focusing their efforts on platforms that will actually make them some decent money and not try and tap into a fickle market who are quite happy to tilt on their wii fits for the next 10 years
