Team17 working on Worms for iPhone [Update]
A video posted over at Pocket Gamer seems to show off a very early build of Worms for the iPhone. The video is pretty brief, though it still manages to impress us through some slick visuals and competent controls. Whether or not this is real, know that we want it to be real.
We've put in word to both Team17 and EA's mobile division (which was rumored to have acquired the license). EA got back to us to say that the company "does not comment on rumor and speculation." While we wait on Team17, you can head past the break and watch poor Harlequin catch a rocket to the face.
Update: We've spoken with a source at Team17 that has confirmed the video past the break is authentic and something the team produced in-house, choosing to sneakily unload it onto the 'nets, rather than send Joystiq a press release. Our contact said that Team17 has actually moved to self-publish games in the digital distribution space, so it no longer needs to rely on partners get its products out there. So, in short: Worms on the iPhone is real, Team17 is doing everything, and there isn't any planned release date as of right now.

So Worms is the new Tetris now? When can I play it on my toaster?

Worms was the new "Tetris" ever since it came out; I mean, can you even IMAGINE a better party game? No, Mario Party doesn't count :p
[If I'm being honest, I only rate one game better at "party" games, Bishi Bashi Special on PSX / arcade... Damn those crazy Japanese!]

iShoot may have beaten them to the AppStore with this gameplay, but this is far slicker looking.

I really hope they utilize the p2p functionality of the iPhone OS 3.0. I would love to be able to play this online anywhere. Either way I'm going to buy it though ^_^

I'd buy THAT for whatever they're selling it for!!

If you can play this online, I will buy it yet again. I've bought Woems so many times...

Team17 has overstayed their welcome. You can't milk one franchise forever without making improvements, and Armageddon (arguably World Party) was the last Worms game to actually add something to the franchise.

Worms is like Mario Kart in its appeal: it's a very fun multiplayer game by nature. They don't need to update the concept, they just need to release a version on each new platform that comes out so we can keep on enjoying it.
The core Worms gameplay never changed, because they just couldn't think of a way they could improve on it. I agree with that. At least they're not adding things for the sake of adding things.

I agree with the original poster... what was the last Worms game to add something new to the mix? The Wii iteration tried motion controls, but those were incredibly spotty (not to mention the game lacked online play). The XBLA and PSN versions actually leave more out, content wise, then they add when compared to PC offerings. I love Worms, but I really wish they would try something *new* instead of just releasing the core game over and over again.
I'd love to see the 3D concept make a comeback. Especially with the pointer controls on the Wii... it could be very interesting.

I full-heartedly disagree with KupoCheer and thesimplicity.
I'm super excited to play Worms (Armegeddon style) on my iPhone, hopefully with network play, and maybe online play too.
the LAST thing i want is another crappy attempt to make a *perfect* 2D game into a crappy 3D stinker.
