didnt they take history class or economics?

roman empire?etc.
enron?etc.

whenever anything in life gets too big or consumes to much, 'WHATEVER ONE BELIEVES' has a way of catching up and breaking up or destroying or etc......

how many bad assets do you really want to buy? if a company is selling it is probably because they are having problems.
maybe they think they can save all the great IP's owned by the companies squaresoft has purchased over the years.

Undoubtedly in the future, historians will look back on this post and say "if only! If only they had heeded the advice of the prophet "sk8monroe81"! This all could have been avoided!"

Actually there's a lot more to this article then what Joystiq posted here. The reason why they're going after all these acquisitions is because they feel that the japanese gaming market has become too closed off and "xenophobic" and that they've been left behind by many western developers. To remedy that, squeenix wants to acquire some western developers for themselves.

Zerokku is right. that's all there is to it. they're westernizing themselves. no problem with that. it would be bad if they started going to far like buying activision or something (yeah i know that's not possible). i for one do not want to play final call of duty XXIV.

@ THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker)

I still wish they would have acquired Tecmo though. Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball with the final fantasy girls would have been amazing.

So, you think the lesson from the Enron disaster is that anything that is big must then fall apart and die?

The Roman Empire and Enron? WTF.

Do you even know what business Enron was in?

yeah your accountant called and said that those great pretty updated games from the past are not selling as great as expected just like most on PSN and XBLA.

(( but great game lineup though. BTW. and as a gamer i wouldn't mind playing some myself. ))

im taking this article from a business standpoint for some reason, cause that's how i perceived it from the way i read the joystiq article.

but you gotta admit most of those games would fail today....
kane and lynch and tomb raider are great examples of this and those are 2 of the better games on the list among others.

Kayne & Lynch would be near to dead last on that list. It's a very bad game. Though I suppose it would rank ahead of Daikatana.

Anyway, Thief is the game that most needs to make a come back from that list. It's a fantastic series.

I enjoyed Kane & Lynch a great deal actually, I think it's quite a stretch to say across the board that it was a very bad game. It had a lot of character to it, and I thought they rolled out the story and paced the narrative well.

Makes me think of Lost Planet, as people will swear up and down what an awful game yet was, yet there's also a vocal group of folks who had a great time with it.

zuburi- that was funny k, hopefully you took my comment as a joke too, as i know the directors of square enix are probably very bright people who have their jobs for a reason, hopefully. but i did mean what I said about the subject MaTeRiAlS..'

zerokku- i didnt know that side of it and that sounds good in theory yes, but IMO:
kinda hard to change Japanese gaming habits or anybodies for that matter.. MS attempted that in japan and soon learned to take hold and release many JRPG type games and to also make some of the more overall game titles multi platform. ( tekken 6, DMC4, etc.)

IMO buying edios was a bad decision. they were selling the company for a reason. i dont know if many people are waiting for the next kane and lynch or tomb raider game, but that is just me.
I personally dont see any good western developers or mainly publishers up for sale, but rather struggling ones that are going out of business.
sometimes you have to stick to what you do best and make sure you do what your loyal fans enjoy best... square has had some patchy work lately and mixed reviews on some of their recent games, but i still enjoyed most of their recent games.
but thats just my lil opinion: 1 out of 6,000,000,000+

When Arkham Asylum gets released, I think Squeenix will end up pleased with the eidos acquisition. Just saying.

hey i meant to reply above, damn comment system with no back up or delete...
but thanks for comin' on down.... lol..
good point and there are many options for square to excel with eidos, but i dunno, eidos could not do it on their own.
well considering that i cant remember any batman game selling more than 1 million copies without the 4 letters LEGO on the game box, i am skeptical of the new batman game being a success...
there have been so many games in the last 2 years that i felt would be huge a success and wound up with poor sales data.

If they really wanted to be one with the west they'd localize games during development, and release alongside Japan. Not leaving the west as an afterthought.

I don't especially see japanese games being any less innovative than western ones. They have their hundreds of anime-inspired JRPGs. We have our hundreds of brown WW2/Middle East shooters.

Some of the more innovative games of recent years have come out of japan. (Katamari, Killer7, etc... ). Infact nintendo seems to have been too inovative for their own good ;-)

the two markets have become almost totally detached though.. so i guess it makes sense for them to try to broaden appeal.
Really though, the problem is SqEnix themselves, rather than japanese developers in general. they have their formula and they stick to it.

so will the final fantasy guys man-up up and cut down on having gay sex on deviantart?
and lawl at the first comment. microsoft must have missed your memo dude.

hopefully the next next final fantasy will have a plot like magic is useless because the mana(lifesteam?) of earth is pissed off. so they'll have to resort to using an guns. Then the new non-latent homosexual male lead can be running through through the forest of goblins shooting everything in sight. when we're forced to talk to a npc to find out that the orange goblin who lives in a van down by the river, has the key to open the door we need to get through, we'llhave the choice to pursue the goblin OR we can choke the npc, shoot him, stab him with a 10 foot sword....then steal his gil. then we can use his corpse loaded with explosives to blast the door apart.
