Joystiq hands-on: White Knight Chronicles

Sony and Level-5's latest role-playing collaboration, White Knight Chronicles, has been out in Japan since December, but we recently got a chance to check out a partially localized version of the game at Sony Gamers Day 2009.
Starting up the demo, we were treated to an intro cinematic featuring final English voice-over. The sequence, featuring the game's hero Leonard and his party gearing up for their quest, immediately dispelled any doubt that Level 5 -- known for a typically more anime or cel-shaded art style -- could pull off an immensely detailed, more "mature" looking RPG. The cutscene also left us hopeful the voice acting we were hearing remained as solid throughout the entirety of the final game.
Speaking of sound, Sony confirmed to us that it's planning to implement voice chat in the US and European versions of White Knight Chronicles, something that was painfully absent from the Japanese release. We're told it's not 100% set in stone, but the dev and localization teams "really want to make it happen."

Given the compressed schedule of the event, it was far from the ideal environment to go deep with such a high-profile RPG. Still, we were able to adventure through the overworld and come to grips with the combat system. The world itself is very lush and conveys a grand sense of scale, the latter being helped by an incredible draw distance.
The enemies we fought were mainly pesky, wasp-like creatures with giant stingers and venomous walking plants. In other words, typical JRPG fare. Actually battling the beasts was very easy to get into -- we get the feeling Level-5 is trying to introduce a degree of mass-market friendliness with the controls. It's possible to simply point Leonard toward an enemy, keep pressing X, and finish them off -- but where's the flair (or fun) in that? Fortunately, the range of attacks seemed quite deep and the ability to create customized sets of them that are quickly selectable is a breeze.
With just a few button presses, we were able to create rows of custom attack combinations that could be navigated with a quick up/down/left/right on the D-pad. The Sony rep guarding the kiosk said he'd leveled the characters up "quite a bit," so it was hard to really get a feel for the effectiveness of one attack over another. They all killed in one hit!
Maybe it was payback for our hubris in gloating over all the quick kills, but we soon found outselves squaring off against an overworld mini-boss of sorts: a giant boar. Effectively flanking it and backing off when necessary using the real time movement system was the key to toppling the roaring, huffing, impressive beast.
Not long after this encounter we got a chance to transform our character into the towering --and titular -- White Knight in order to do battle with an equally gigantic enemy. After all, why wail away with puny swords when you can run an enemy through with a blade the size of a bus? We'd watched an earlier player attempt to take down the Ent-like tree monster and have a pretty hard time of it as a mere human-sized Leonard. Battling it on its own level, in something that looked like a medieval mech fight, was over pretty quickly. Still, it was spectacular while it lasted.
Sadly, the online co-op component of the game wasn't being demonstrated, but we've gut a hunch we'll get to play -- and write about -- plenty of it before this gorgeous looking game ships at the end of '09. If Sony can deliver the same quality of dialog, voice-over and gameplay we experienced, combined with proper voice chat for online team-ups, we're looking at the next great PS3-exclusive RPG.

spread em out for us....
Averna @ Apr 29th 2009 9:06PM
The whole 'partially localised' thing has me thinking it wont be here very soon. That being said I think the end of '09, which they say in the article, sounds just about right.
Sangor @ Apr 29th 2009 12:13PM
I really can't wait for this, it's funny how the things you want the most seem to take forever to arrive.
NandoSupes @ Apr 29th 2009 12:59PM
that's true, but good things comes to those who wait :).
I really want to play this game, its been on my radar for a while.
Eric E @ Apr 29th 2009 4:09PM
thats called relativity, to paraphrase Einstein : Putting your hand on a hot stove for a minute seems like an hour, putting your hand on a hot girl for an hour seems like a minute
sk8monroe81 @ Apr 29th 2009 4:33PM
especially with sony and when you live in america or outside of japan.
we have to wait a bit longer....
Great Golem+ @ Apr 29th 2009 10:18PM
If you have a PSP and still haven't given Jean D'Arc a try... do it now. One of the best games on the handheld, and made by Level 5 as well.
emperorzeroxx @ Apr 29th 2009 3:25PM
I can't wait for this game to be switched to a 360 exclusive a few months before its released... They tend to do that to good games.. but if not I finally can get a new ps3 game!! woo
Hace @ Apr 29th 2009 4:04PM
Work on your zingers.
sk8monroe81 @ Apr 29th 2009 4:26PM
just as microsoft game studios cant wait to make halo 4 a ps3 exlcusive title.
korwyn @ Apr 29th 2009 5:15PM
I can't tell which one is worse
good PS3 exclusive titles turn multi-platform a few months before they release or good 360 exclusive titles release on PS3 a year later with exclusive contents.
anyway buddy, you at least will get a new game on your PS3 finally, but I still have no luck for my new 360 game(s) really. :o(
AustinAM @ Apr 29th 2009 2:09PM
Wow, lots of PlayStation news. Now's a good time to own a PS3 or PSP.
I'm looking forward to this and I also want a release date.
LegendaryRedass @ Apr 29th 2009 2:10PM
I was wondering just yesterday what the status was on this game. Right when news of the witcher hit. At least we still have this to look forward to.
Orex @ Apr 29th 2009 2:11PM
Enough with the wait, i been waiting for a "decent" RPG for a Very Long time now, I cannot wait any longer...Seriously.
E3 Better have the unvieling of some release date trailers.
Jerk Face @ Apr 29th 2009 2:41PM
Valkyria Chronicles says hello!
RagingStormX @ Apr 29th 2009 3:03PM
@ Jerk Face
As good as VC is, for some big fans of traditional JRPGs...a SRPG doesn't satisfy in the same way. (unless its FF Tactics lol)
Orex @ Apr 29th 2009 3:10PM
Yeah but i dont wanna play a SRPG, i just wanna play a standard or a real good JRPG.
VC not that bad but its not my scene. so i totaly agree with ragingstorm
vask @ Apr 29th 2009 4:27PM
i see disgaea 3 and cross edge on the horizon....
pkpk523 @ Apr 29th 2009 4:37PM
Yeah, i get what you're saying in your reply. In VC's defense, I would say it is unlike any SRPG I've ever played, and I've played a lot. I still say give it a rent, or even better, it is $25 new at gamestop right now as someone had mentioned.
If you're looking for a straight JRPG this gen, I'd recommend Lost Odyssey if you have a 360 as well. Its nothing groundbreaking, but it is a solid effort, and it might tide you over till White Knight or the next FF.
Personally, I still say try VC
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 29th 2009 4:44PM
Already released JRPGs you may have missed on the PS3
Eternal Sonata (Enhanced Version)
Folklore (Lots of DLC)
Disgaea 3 Abscence Of Justice (Lots of DLC)
Coming Soon on the PS3
Sacred 2 (May 12th Action RPG)
*Cross Edge (May 19th JRPG)* This will be one to check out if you want a JRPG.
Later In The Year On The PS3
The Witcher (September 2009)
Dragon Age Origins (November 2009)
White Knight Chronicles (Q4 2009)
Tales Of Vesperia Enhanced Version (Q4 2009)
Demons Souls (Q4 2009 but can be imported and is fully in English!) http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-15-demons+souls-70-36pw.html
It's also rumored that the Square Enix stable of titles will release on the PS3 this year as well including Star Ocean IV, Last Remnant & Infinite Undiscovery.
Final Fantasy 13 is releasing in Q4 of 2009 on the PS3 in JPN. It's not known when it will release here in North America. Also, Final Fantasy 13 Versus is supposed to release sometime in 2010 on the PS3. You can always import the Advent Children Complete Blu-Ray that includes a demo of Final Fantasy 13.
Hopefully we get (localizations of) Daikoukai Jidai Online: Cruz del Sur, Namco X Capcom & Ryu ga Gotoku 3 but I'm not holding my breath.
Of course if you have a backwards compatiable PS3 then you can also play games like Devil Summoner 2 and the full stable of steady JRPGs constantly released on the console. The PS2 is still the go to console for JRPGs.
Just trying to help ...

@ Orex:
As many on this site have mentioned before, try Valkyrie Chronicles. I've had it for a while and just got around to it the last few weeks, but it really is quite stunning. For me, rpgs have a tough time standing out from one another. What separates a good from a great one is being able to identify with the characters. That can be different from player to player, but for me, VC was the closest i've felt to the characters since...well, can hardly remember how long.
This reminds me of Lost Odyssey for some reason. Not necessarily a bad thing btw.
Orex @ Apr 29th 2009 3:15PM
Yeah, i know VC does look good, but SRPG's not my thing, i prefer the traditional Jrpg, thats what rocks my boat.
Coincidently i was in my local gameshop last night to buy a new game, it was a choice between Unreal tournament, VC & mercenaries2
Mercs 2 and Unreal were both 10 each so i picked them both up but i regret getting Mercs 2, the game dont seem good to me, but unreal was awsome fun no there are a pack of people online again.
but on point i wish i picked up VC, but i wont be anymore, ill rather wait for an RPG that floats my boat :) (final fantasy, White knight, [posibly]Last remnant.)
sk8monroe81 @ Apr 29th 2009 4:30PM
orex the last remnant was a good game for a JRPG fan.
if you have a 360, give star ocean a whirl too.
or when last remnant comes out on ps3, i would recommend that game to any JRPG fan.
NeoGohan @ Apr 29th 2009 3:03PM
Hurry up, Level 5. We're still waiting for translations of Professor Layton...
Orex @ Apr 29th 2009 3:15PM
This game cant come soon enough..
*drool*
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 29th 2009 4:56PM
As I said above in a reply to you you should check out Cross Edge in about 2 weeks. It's a traditional RPG that releases here in North American around the second week of May.

Rein @ Apr 29th 2009 3:18PM
I love Level 5 and I know that they are doing wonders with this game, but I hope the story doesn't go all DBZ towards the end like it did in Rogue Galaxy. Rogue Galaxy was an amazing game but really, the final boss was a complete letdown.
Now then, someone want to give me their PS3? :(
WitchSmeller @ Apr 29th 2009 3:32PM
Gamestop is selling brand new copies of VC for about 25 dollars right now. They have them in bins up near the front of the store.
