Joystiq impressions: Katamari Forever
Gallery: Katamari Forever
The version of Katamari Forever we were shown at Namco Bandai's San Francisco preview event was obviously Katamari Damacy Forever -- not a bit of it had been localized, but we can't imagine that taking an especially long time, really.
From the moment we saw the pop-up book style menus, we were smitten by that indescribable Katamari magic all over again. While we waited to see some action, we noticed a jazzy remix of one of the original game's tracks playing in the background; it sounded great.
When we finally got rolling (sorry) it was in a level where the King of All Cosmos had lost ... well, he basically had amnesia. In the world of all things surreal, this meant the level was completely devoid of color. However, when our demoer rolled up items, all instances of the same item in the world regained their color. The goal, as you can probably guess, was to restore color to the entire level. A meter filled as the Prince rolled up more and more objects; when it was at its max, a shockwave triggered that drew in all objects within a large radius of the Katamari.
The second of the two levels we saw wasn't about rolling things up -- the challenge here was to restore all the flora in the stage. The Prince was able to do this by rolling the Katamari into water, which it then soaked up like a sponge. The usual diameter display now showed how much of the wet stuff he was rolling around. As the Katamari passed over the parched desert, flowers and other greenery sprouted in its wake. Again, this was a "change everything" objective level. It was rendered using the colored pencil filter, which looked, well, amazing.
While Katamari Forever probably would have made an ideal PSN title, Namco has decided to release it on Blu-ray Disc. Although some of us would easily pay full price for the game, we have to think it won't retail for $59.99. Hopefully we'll hear more on the price and final release date soon. For now, all we have is "fall 2009."

I'm game.. Here's hoping for the freshest Katamari yet (after a considerably stale predecessor).
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 29th 2009 10:39PM
i'm pretty excited for this since i've never played katamari before. and guys, sorry for the unrelated link, but IGN has a new analyzed version of the modern warfare 2 trailer. it points out more stuff than the old analyzed version. like submarines.

Are you sincerely sorry for posting that link? I don't think you are.

I'm interested in this and Tekken 6 since I never played a Katamari game but judging from the responses for beautiful Katamari and the comments in the Tekken 6 article are Katamari and Tekken games that you only need to play once in your life time? The message I'm getting is once you played Damaci and Tekken 3 you don't need to play the sequels.
mezzanine @ Apr 29th 2009 10:56PM
If your last Tekken game was 3, go ahead and pick up 6.
Robert Maynard @ Apr 29th 2009 11:03PM
The Katamari games have basically been like that thus far - pretty much all the same. I expect them to use the PS3 to significantly bump up the object count though, and by the sounds of it the filters are pretty awesome. I never bought my own copy of the other titles but this sort of looks like it could be a definitive one to own. I doubt the general feel of the game will be any different from the previous games though.
Markez @ Apr 30th 2009 1:30AM
ESC if you've never played one before I think you'd have fun picking this one up (same goes for you up there, Sly), sounds like there's some clever new stuff in it. Plus the PS controllers, in my opinion, are just much, much better for the Katamari games than the 360 controller.
I'd loved We Heart Katamari on the PS2 when I owned it, and I really like Beatiful Katamari on my 360. 2nd time around with Katamari though seems to lose a little bit of the magic you feel on your 1st experience. Still fun though.
Joe H @ Apr 29th 2009 10:44PM
Too bad it's PS3 only, I'd probably be interested if it was on the 360.
Cosmo @ Apr 29th 2009 11:15PM
The PS3 could use more exclusives.
Great Golem+ @ Apr 30th 2009 12:36AM
Why downvote the poor guy for just telling he would like the game? Hey I'll be honest and say if Braid came out on PSN I would get it right away. :)
Petebot330 @ Apr 30th 2009 10:52AM
Right with you.
Ashitaka @ Apr 30th 2009 2:11PM
@ Great Golem
I downloaded it off PirateBay and I dare to say that Braid isn't *the game* everyone talked about.
Sure, it's cool. But it has no story and it's too short.
xtina @ Apr 29th 2009 10:56PM
Joe H @
There's one out for xbox360, called beautiful katamari. But its harder on the 360 due to one joystick is higher than the other.
Anyways, GO KATAMARI ! :P
Rob @ Apr 29th 2009 11:02PM
Tell me about it.
Killiam XXIII @ Apr 29th 2009 11:20PM
How is it harder? I had the game since it came out and I don't have any problems with the controls.
WiredKnight @ Apr 29th 2009 11:22PM
Maybe not harder per se, but with a PS controller it's more comfortable and makes more sense where the sticks are located, since the Katamari steers like a tank.
Clutch_beast @ Apr 30th 2009 12:44AM
Agreed. I played through all of the original 2 as well as Beautiful Katamari on 360, and while I didn't have much trouble adapting to the 360 controller, it just never felt quite right. I'm excited about its return to what I consider to be its native format.
Duke @ Apr 30th 2009 11:16AM
I played the hell out of Katamari on the PS2 and the 360 and they don't feel the same. I agree that the control on the DualShock just feels right and on the 360 it felt a bit off. So, no reason to hate on it, the game is at home on the PS3. I know I will be grabbing this - Katamari = crack!

Deviation @ Apr 29th 2009 11:02PM
I'd much rather purchase a game like this as a downloadable title.
whazam1337 @ Apr 29th 2009 11:11PM
seriously your tellin me. Im not paying more then 10 bucks for this
Deviation @ Apr 29th 2009 11:31PM
Oh, I'd pay $20 for it... I just want it on my hard drive instead of taking up space on my shelves.
oldballs @ Apr 29th 2009 11:42PM
same here ...
I hate it when games are on disks. i'm not being sarcastic
its the only reason i don't play LBP anymore ... its not worth it to stand up, open up a CD case, take it out, put it in .. bleh.
i would pay up to 40 dollars for this.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Apr 30th 2009 2:30AM
I can't tell if Oldballs is being sarcastic, or is really that lazy...
Joshua Ochs @ Apr 30th 2009 2:46AM
Amen. I love being able to sit down, grab a controller, and play. No discs - heck I don't even have to power it on because the controller does that. I'm rather pissed that I bought Burnout Paradise on disc all of a week before it showed up on PSN - it's the only disc-based game I own, and as a result, I play it very infrequently.
Now if only Sony would come up with a nice, secure, DRM'ed (I don't CARE in this instance) way of copying our existing discs to the hard drive...
Finito @ Apr 30th 2009 3:16AM
@Deviation
Are you crazy? You obviously don't remember the katamari boxarts, otherwise you'd have never said that.

Yeah, this is ridiculous, can't take up more than a gig or two, no buy from me, still have the old PS2 Katamari.
hoop @ Apr 29th 2009 11:15PM
Hey Randy, can you comment on the controls? I realize that the lack of comment probably means that it just uses the same analog stick controls as the two originals, but is there a control option for using motion controls to steer?
Gavin @ Apr 29th 2009 11:16PM
Katamari will return in Katamari Never Dies
Einhanderkiller @ Apr 30th 2009 12:22AM
No One Lives Forever... except for Katamari.
Petebot330 @ Apr 30th 2009 10:56AM
Katamari and Robin
JDHexen @ Apr 29th 2009 11:18PM
Yeah mezzanine is right. If you stopped at 3 than you'll want to pick up Tekken 6 for sure but for those of us who have owned or played Tekken 5 it just looks like Tekken 5 in HD .

My last Tekken game was on the PSP.So I gues sI should wait until 7 then?
Markez @ Apr 30th 2009 1:33AM
Might as well just wait for 13 at this point, it's only a timed exclusive in Japan.
fffunfarm06 @ Apr 29th 2009 11:20PM
ive heard so much good things with the xbox version i want to try it.
WiredKnight @ Apr 29th 2009 11:20PM
I don't think they ever plan to remodel anything for Katamari again. This really is the same as the previous ones, but with more levels, some new little mechanics, and some extra effects thrown in.
If I had a PS3 I'd still probably get it, but I'd like to see the series make a little more progress.
j.howlett @ Apr 29th 2009 11:21PM
i keep saying how they should take a cue from the first game and launch at a budget price. still i want it
Joe H @ Apr 29th 2009 11:35PM
I've played the 360 one, but it sounds like this has different types of levels that Beautiful Katamari doesn't have.
arrness @ Apr 29th 2009 11:44PM
im glad its a blu ray disc because it will make my collection more impressive, but theres no way im paying more than 20 for it
Clutch_beast @ Apr 30th 2009 12:47AM
A friend of mine purchased Beautiful Katamari. He sold it two weeks later. He loved the game, but he couldn't deal with people on his floor constantly berging into his dorm room asking to play and monopolizing his XBox. Let this be a warning- use Katamari responsibly.
angelicwhore @ Apr 30th 2009 1:31AM
I shamelessly love Katamari. I can't wait for this!!
erwr @ Apr 30th 2009 2:33AM
Katamari Unleashed!!!!!
yeayyy milking and killing the franchise.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Apr 30th 2009 2:31AM
I would totally buy this if I had a PS3.
I still need to pick up Beautiful Katamari, anyways...
tsukasa1288 @ Apr 30th 2009 2:33AM
glad to be able to play a katamari game again with a proper controller set up. the recent 360 and psp ones just didn't cut it for me.
pat @ Apr 30th 2009 3:13AM
Hmmmm... Any chance of this being released in Europe?
Alphathon @ Apr 30th 2009 5:16AM
Want! I really hope this is released in Europe
bones3d @ Apr 30th 2009 6:04AM
Damn... I really hoped I wouldn't have to buy a PS3 specifically for a Katamari game, but I might just have to now. Here's hoping this one is better (and longer) than Beautiful Katamari on the 360.
Any idea if they're adding new songs to this one, or at least making every song from all previous games available to in all levels? (I certainly wouldn't mind more IdolMaker songs in the mix...)
Speaking of Beautiful Katamari, it'd be great if they offered Katamari Forever as a downloadable add-on. The current downloads are a bit too light for my tastes.
David Cater @ Apr 30th 2009 8:35AM
I'm slowly starting to consider the possibility of getting a PS3. I have plenty of games left unplayed for my 360, because I simply don't have enough time to play everything I buy to the end.
But there are starting to be a couple of PS3 exclusives I wouldn't mind having. This is one of them. MAG (Massive Action Game) also sounds very intriguing to me. I love the idea of an FPS with more structure and a command and control hierarchy.
I suspect it will still take more games to push me over the edge. Or perhaps I primarily need to get done renovating my house so I get through the backlog of 360 games...
