US RPG fans, you're getting a dose of JRPG goodness later this year when Namco Bandai releases MagnaCarta 2 exclusively for the Xbox 360. IGN reports a localized version of the Unreal 3 engine-based game will arrive on US shores, and will feature over 40 hours of gameplay, as well as fully-narrated CG scenes. Developer Softmax is returning to create the sequel to 2005's PS2 title, MagnaCarta: Tears of Blood, with Korean artist Hyung-Tae Kim handling character designs for the sequel.
The game will take place on the Lanzheim Continent, which has been ravaged by war, and focuses on the story of Luto, who suffers from Amnesia. The game's battle system features a combination of turn-based mechanics with real-time elements, and players can switch between characters on the fly. You can even customize your party's AI at will.
Head past the break for a trailer that shows off pretty much what you'd expect: Beautiful men and passive-aggressive dialogue. Oh, and magic.
As awesome as I think the last Magna Carta was, it really wasn't very well received. Personally, I think this one will also fly right under the radar..which will be a real shame. But hey--more cheap second hand games for me!
ya its a krpg. but korean rpgs are heavily influenced by jrpgs.
also i dont understand why there is so much hostility towards jrpgs, saying the males are not masculine or w/e same generalizing crap could be said for all the unmemorable characters that are in western rpgs.
Because these characters are extremely unlikable, annoying to look it and just plain stupid, and when you have to play a 40 hour+ game with one as the lead character, it is a problem.
You can argue that characters like Marcus Fenix or the guys from Army of Two are generic/forgetable but at least you don't want to punch them in the face everytime they open their mouths.
I agree with Kevin949. The only reason you don't want to punch them in the face is because they're unrealistically large muscles would crush you to the point where you're body would not be recognizable anymore... and that's just from the sheer energy of testosterone emitting from their bodies. With jrpgs, it seems like your scrawny bodies would be more likely to dominate them in a beating.
You're either blind or have something to prove. Saying the styles aren't similar is like saying the male characters aren't androgynous. And no, giving one a beard doesn't help.
@randomguy: Please, enlighten us as to what, specifically, you see in that video that speaks to the differences between Korean and Japanese clich-, er, art styles.
Keep in mind that this would be impossible between two countries in "the West," despite that term referring to dozens of countries located all over the world.
wow a bunch of racits up in here huh? you think everyone who has slant-eyes and make video games are japanese? idiots. is a KRPG because the people who made ARE KOREAN... fucking dumbasses in here today.
i think it has more to do with the fact that they're a small developer so they dont have the resources to develop on ps3 as well. also i think xbox is doing decently in korea because of the massive amount of piracy.
This is the only thing i dred about sony, No Fucking JRPGs, makes me sick,
[and i dont care if n e ps3fanboys "Downvote me to death", this is just crap :(
Ill just have to play it on my bros 360.
[and i dont care if n e 360fanboys downvote me to death] i play my ps3 alot more nowadays im just pissed sony, (an asain company mind) cannot get a decent RPG to the system...BUT a US company, gets the saucy goodness of about 5 JRPGS, including one that was supposed to be excluive to ps3.
On top of that! Last remnant by chance probs wont get released on ps n e more, so i have to EAGERLY wait for Final fantasy XIII/Versus & White Night chronicles,
BOTH OF WHICH will be released in the reagions of 2000&NEVER!!!!
(Note to self, dont self destruct on joystiq ever again) *walks out whisling*
And before n e one says, i played valkyrie chronicles but it not my sort of game, im jut glad i have Marvel vs capcom demo to dominate 2morrow on next PSN store update :)
And i dont want to leave with any bitter thoughts so, im happy 4 all u 360 fans on getting this pretty good looking rpg.
I'm not sure if that Marvel vs Capcom thing was supposed to be a jab at 360 owners.. But I thought it was worth pointing out anyway that the only reason the 360 isn't getting a demo, is because all XBLA games have free trials when they go up, so there's no need for demo's of them.
Unlike with PSN where most of the time there's no option to try before you buy.
Its good to see that I wasn't alone with my disgust in the way Sony is on the shitty end of the JRPG stick. I too am happy for the 360 gamers...the more these developers make money, the more RPGs they can afford to make. I was really looking forward to playing Magna Carta 2. I played and beat the first one for the PS2...and I must say that although its a JRPG that only the strongest of JRPG fans can stomach for the long haul, it has the potential to be great just like FF and the rest of them. I am hoping Softmax gets it right this time around with part 2....and Hyung-Tae Kim is still one of my favorite game character artist. (even if most of the men he draws looks like women and mostly all of the women he draws looks like pornstars)
Really? You didn't expect a game called White KNIGHT Chronicles to be set in a medieval time period?
Also, I agree with Orex completely. Last generation, If you wanted to play RPGs, the PS2 was your system. Somehow Sony forgot that the rest of the world likes RPGs, and that just annoys me.
I dont know what sony were thinking in skipping the RPG beat this time arround, but they need to tep thier game up and realise that its not all about FPS, of course there good but i like selectivity, (good selevtivity) not some soddy scrap up rpg to make a few happy faces, they need to bring it back to the Final fantasy 7/8/9/10 days. AND SOON!
Orex, I'm begging you: please, please, please stop using the phrase "n e" to replace "any". It's not cute or funny and it actually takes just as many characters/key strokes to type it the correct way, so it's not faster either. It just makes you look unintelligent.
That said, I agree with your original comment. I'd be pretty upset too if I bought a PS3 and got shafted in the JRPG department. PS2 had a wealth of JRPGs in its library so I can see why you would expect the PS3 to follow suit. It's really unfortunate that that isn't the case.
LOL @ Snowblinds fanboy defenses being up over an innocent comment. LAME.
Orex -
I'm going to assume that much like Eternal Sonata & Tales Of Vesperia this Namco Bandai JRPG will also more than likely land on the PS3. When it does it will also probably sell much better which makes us question why these games are timed exclusives to begin with.
RPG is my favorite genre, and I too miss the lack of great RPG's on the PS3, but the 360 doesn't have them either. It's not about quantity, but obviously about the quality, and there hasn't been a truly great JRPG this generation. Only ToV came close, but thankfully it's being ported.
I just can't play another generic JRPG anymore. And judging from the trailer MagnaCarta is as generic as it gets.
First let me say that I agree with Orex as well. I initially bought a PS3 because I love PRGs. About a year later I broke down and bought a 360 as well because it was clear what system the RPGs were flowing to.
(Yes I play both systems, get over it and down rank me if you really feel that's such a horrible thing.)
@Finito
I disagree with you that the 360 doesn't really have any RPGs. There may not be any you were interested in but they are certainly there. Hell, even if you just take the RPGs by there review scores and judge them solely on that you find quite a number of them were reviewed highly:
Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey Eternal Sonata Tales of Vesperia Star Ocean
And then for the more "die-hard" and forgiving RPG fans tehre more even still that, while didn't fair as well in reviews, still can be quite good if your willing to overlook some odd design choices:
Inifinte Undiscovery The Last Remnant Operation Darkness Enchanted Arms
And then if your willing to branch out of the coveted JRPG genre and head over to the Western shores you'll find EVEN more RPGs:
Mass Effect Fable 2 Fallout 3 Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Two Worlds
So saying that there's not that many RPGs on the 360 isn't accurate at all. There are highly reviewed ones and not-so-highly reviewed ones. Some that are Japanese others that are American/European. But regardless they are out there.
First game was all kinds of awful. I bought it, played less then 4 hours of it and never touched it again. Did get some enjoyment out of it though, watching my brother the self proclaimed "King of Games" force himself to try to beat it...
I'm kinda shocked that the 360 seems to have become the default RPG platform - now just for wRPGs (which was expected given last generation), but also for the jRPG crowd. I'm a bit of a wRPG fanboy, and never really cared for the jRPG game-style, but I'll admit that it's pretty nice to have them to play between wRPGs.
Right now I'm enjoying Last Remnant quite a lot. For a jRPG it's number of side quests and freedom to roam has really surprised me.
The PS2 is really still the defacto go to machine for new RPGs. If we are simply talking the current gen consoles (PS3, Wii & 360) then the 360 is without a doubt the go to system for RPGs. It just seems so strange that the PS3 has the best shooters and the 360 has the best RPGs. Strange.
It's easily debatable that the PS3 has the best shooters anyway. Killzone 2 is overrated. Still good, but it is not the greatest thing ever like half the internet seems to have just accepted. The multiplayer weapons are boring, even obscenely out of place in the game's setting (bolt action rifles hundreds, if not thousands of years into the future?), The levels are imbalanced, the classes are imbalanced, the dedicated base areas have unforgivable bottlenecks, the controls are sluggish, and why the hell does everyone like Radec Academy (love all the custom matches without faction balancing, you losers). I'm exaggerating of course, and these do not mean the game isn't fun, but they are some of the many faults the game has that everyone is perfectly content to just gloss over, a common internet position to take when discussing a PS3 exclusive.
WRPJ is a bit vague. I would say there is a clear difference between RPJs. American ones such as Oblivion or WoW are heavily based on numbers, leveling up, the art style too can also seem a bit mashed together and not sure what it is culture wise. British ones like fable seam more about picture-esq fantasy found in other types of media such as Tolkin or Dickens. They also base the gameplay more on actions more than stats. Then there's eastern European RPJs like The Witchier and Stalker that tend to be darker and more adult.
It's certainly a subjective opinion when we talk about what and what isn't the best in any walk of life. When I think of 360 shooters I tend to think of Gears 1 & 2 and Halo 3. This year that could change with Halo ODST & Section 8 releasing. However, when I think about the PS3 I think of Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Uncharted. This lineup also looks to be improved with the hugely anticipated title M.A.G & Uncharted 2 releasing sometime in the this fiscal year.
Games like Call Of Duty 4 & 5, Bioshock, Orangebox, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space, Grand Theft Auto don't really count because they are multiplatform.
The trailer looks good but there doesn't seem to be game play footage, I mean CGI looked all most as good for FF7 way back in the day. Game play trailer please, love RPG's but if the battle system is wack then - yeah
