The Red Steel 2 media onslaught continues today with the official announcement from Ubisoft. There's not a lot new to talk about, but we did learn that Ubisoft Paris is on development and that we'll get to slice and shoot our way through the game this holiday season.
They also sent along some not particularly enlightening concept art that you can see for yourself by clicking the snippet above.

I tried playing the first iteration ages ago when it released, for about 30 mins and gave up. Suppose they don't have any way to go but up (quality wise). I'm not really that into FPS games, unless they do something unique story-wise a la The Darkness. This, if I'm recalling correctly, was Japanese dude kidnaps your girlfriend, go get 'er type of thing?
Looks like some of the NeoGAF box art that Joystiq linked to not long ago. Looks very cool. Couldn't remember which site was doing it, but remembered deeznutz saying their thread had become sentient, so thanks to google I recalled it was NeoGAF :P

This is good. Competition for The Conduit. Hopefully more will follow.

Does that picture come in a 1920x1200 background?
Not too excited for this. By the way.
First was mediocre at best, although the new setting could make it interesting.

I really looks like it should just be a Rising Zan sequel which would be much better.

With access to Wii Motion Plus and Wii Sports Resort to go off of, if the sword play does end up being botched the developers should have their licenses stripped.

Uhh, so you're suggesting it would be a good idea for Nintendo to strip the world's 4th largest game publisher of their Wii license if they botch Red Steel 2?
You have to be kidding right? Ubisoft has made some of the Wii's biggest 3rd party hits, and regardless of quality Red Steel was a big seller and a launch title (so quality complaints are moot).

What are you talking about? So a game is only as good as it's sales numbers? Don't be ridiculous.
Oh, and for the record, Red Steel sold good because it was hyped, hyped with promises of 1:1 sword fighting that were never fulfilled.
This game will be better simply because people will be more cautiously optimistic than crasy exited.(ie: Fable/Fable II)
Here's hoping the sequel delivers on those promises the first made.

Alex, yes, they should be stripped of their license.
If they botch a game for the Wii at this stage they shouldn't be in the job.
Also, I'm not impression with the pile of shit that was Raving Rabbids.
I did enjoy RS1, but they can still do ALOT better.

Am I the only one who believes that this isn't historical wild west, but some kind of steampunk iteration? Those buildings don't look like the kind of thing you would find in days gone past.

Didn't we just discuss this "holiday" thing with the below article on Splinter Cell. At least this is a game that I don't want.

The biggest problems with the original were awful controls and underwhelming graphics, no? We already know between Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and Metroid Prime 3 (and presumably, The Conduit) that the Wii can handle kickass FPS controls. The addition of Motion Plus for swordplay and a few years with the hardware to get the most out of it, and this should kick ass.
So basically, I agree with Cody. If this game isn't good, the developers should have their licenses stripped.

This setting seems quite unique. It'd be a shame if the game doesn't do it justice.

I know i'm in the tiny minority, but i have kind of a soft spot for Red Steel. Its main problem was it didn't live up to people's expectations... but if you gave it a break and got used to the controls it wasn't at all bad.
It definitely had potential... plus it gets bonus points for not being set in a generic WW2/Iraq setting.

I'm rather hyped for this, strange as that sounds.
the first one didn't live up to people's expectations (probably never could have), but it definitely wasn't as bad as people made out. the controls weren't polished, but if you gave them enough time then it wasn't at all bad for a first effort.
Plus the setting was unique, and in some places really pretty. (other places not so much).
Plus, this reminds me of the Dark Tower and that can't be bad.
I really hope they pull it off this time, and it lives up to expectations. I want to see some screenshots though....
(PS/ People forget it took a LOT of iterations to get Dual Analog FPS controls right... it wasn't really until Halo that they totally nailed it. )

Agreed, and it should be interesting what they have been spending 3 years concieving.
I also quite liked the first title, but I didn't really like the multiplayer if I'm honest.

Like I said in the last report, no way is this normal wild west. I can bet pints of blood on it being in a futuristic wild west hybrid.
And I'm hyped for it.

I enjoyed the first one, but it had horrible controls. I would NEVER attribute that to the developer though; in fact I give them bonus points for trying to make an FPS for launch. The wiimote fps formula has tightened up a LOT since RS1, and with motion+ for swordplay, they've got my attention.

I never got around to buying Red Steel, probably because of the unfavorable ratings. Hopefully motion+ is a success, along with this sequel.
