On his way out the door, Sony Europe President David Reeves believes the PS3 will be the market leader in three to five years. GI.biz's interview with the parting exec reveals his prognostication that the PS3's performance will be a "tortoise and hare situation," with the PS3 obviously representing the slow and steady creature from the fable.
Reeves restates that he is actually "retiring" and that we won't announce he's with a new company on May 1. He believes that he might do some stuff in the games industry, but he has no concrete plans. Right now, he's just going to "get some rest because it's been a very tough year."

You are certainly in the majority with that situation. There will always be fanatical zealots who won't buy it "Just because" it's got a different logo on the box. I really believe the only thing standing in the way of an exponential growth in consumer adoption is the cost of entry. I would bet everything I own that we here something at E3 referencing a new bundle and/or introductory price reduction.
I know people are excited about the elite bundle with Halo 3 & Fable and I think a similar PS3 bundle with Killzone 2 and/or Little Big Planet would be just as attractive. They just need to figure out the price thing. The games are coming in droves.

How do they plan to achieve this, essentially doubleing their units sold and then some all in 3 to 5 years? Whats their business plan?
They got the games, they just need the price cut and the marketing.
But then you factor in the wii and then realize its too late to be numba 1! They do have global appeal though so they could easily get a close second (closer to 3rd, not 1st).

Last I heard the 360 has 28m units sold and PS3 has 21.7m sold. The only reason MS has more consoles sold is because its been out a year longer, not bad on PS3's side considering everyone bitches about how much it costs.

PS3 is the best video game console ever made.
It is also the best living room device ever made.
It does everything, and it does it very very well.
PS3 makes it clear that the Xbox360 is a complete disaster in every way.

Wow, a PS3 nazi. Are you REALLLLLLY that big of a dumbass console bigot, or is this an act?
Nice past post here - "Gabe Newell should shut his putrid mouth and stay far away from PS3 development if he knows what's good for his company. He said quite loud and clear that the PS3 is a waste of time. Subsequently PS3 owners said loud and clear that Gabe Newell and Valve is a waste of time. I for one will never buy another Valve product again. Go back to sucking on Microsoft's teets Gabe, we don't want you here. By the way Half-Life is one of the most overrated games ever. If you missed it, don't worry."

No I am not a console bigot at all. The PS3 is the best console ever made and it seems like that bothers you for some reason. Are you an idiot, or is that an act? Sony deserves praise and support from videogamers for their excellent hardware, great FREE network, and most importantly stellar software. Why can't you see that before calling me a "PS3 nazi".
The Xbox360 is a complete disaster in every way, and if that bothers you that much then go work for Microsoft and make them build a console that won't break down every 3 months.
As for my past posts Mr. Stalker, I stand completely by that statement concerning Valve and Gabe "Ape" Newell. He is a backwards looking retard with a Microsoft centric vision of the future.

While I do enjoy prophecies and visions from the future, sometimes they are pretty ridiculous.
I think the end of the world in 5 years is even more believable than the PS3 taking over gaming. The system is pretty much done from a market point of view, at least the gamecube was profitable, the PS3 is having trouble even lowering costs..

The PS3 will be obsolete when the new hardware gen starts. Why? Well, last I recall, the PS3 and 360 have a hard time rendering games in 1920x1200 and getting good framerates. So I don't understand people who think the PS3 is the be all end all. It is not. The cell was supposed to do the graphics duties but then they found out it couldnt and so a graphics card was stuffed in there. That graphics card is now old and slow.
Next gen we will get motion controls, better graphics capabilities, and probably hardware physics support.
People who think the current gen is maxing out hardware have a problem looking at history and being creative enough to think that there is no possible way to improve what is currently out. If MS does release something fantastic, then Sony's 3-5 year plan for dominance is lame.

Man, this comment is just made of 76% fail, and I knew it when I read this line:
"The cell was supposed to do the graphics duties but then they found out it couldnt and so a graphics card was stuffed in there. That graphics card is now old and slow."
The Cell along with the SPUs do a lot of heavy lifting for graphics. They run physics engines, animation engines, particles, etc. The Killzone2 devs already went over this and from a "we just use the GPU" standpoint, it is impossible.
Not only that but compare Uncharted to Uncharted 2. As the dev kits mature and developers really dig in with the hardware, games can only look better. Slow GPU or not, the PS3 will continue to impress. God of War 3 looks amazing already and it probably won't drop until next March.

3-5 years? Microsoft's next console, NIntendo's next console, and Sony's next console will be out in that time span. So who gives a shit?

As previously stated, in 3-5 years the next generation of systems will be out, so the PS3 domination 360 and wii in sales won't be that impressive. The system is a solid system, but it can't compete with the 360 or wii due to its high cost. The system is not the best system ever made, and that shows from its dismal sales (360s selling better than them in Japan?) and the 2.7 billion dollar loss Sony took last year. Yes, it does have some great exclusives coming up, but Sony tends to announce its big ticket items way in advance to garner interest in its systems.
Microsoft will announce exclusives and big titles at E3, and it will compete with Sony no problem, just like the last two years. There's no reason that the 360, with many more exclusives (not to mention exclusive extra content), than the PS3 would suddenly drop down to none. And I really think people are under estimating the power of the Halo franchise. Halo ODST will sell more units than most of Sony's upcomming exclusives combined.
Sony needs a lot of work. It needs to make the PS3 affordable and appealing to more people, to you know, make money and potentially stay in the market. It also needs to do the same with the PSP. Yes, there's likely a new upgrade or a new PSP going to be announced at E3, but as Nintendo has shown us it probably won't matter due to the DS. The DSi was selling 43 units a minute the first 48 hours it was out in Japan, the third version of the DS was shipping over 100k units in 2 days, in one country. Has the PSP ever done that?
And someone mentioned a PS3 bundled with Killzone 2 and LBP. Yes, it sounds like a great idea, but the current bundle (with Uncharted) barely sells, and Killzone isn't nearly as big as Halo, or as played. It's like trying to compete against a Mario or Pokemon game, it just can't happen. I'm sure some people would enjoy it, but the price would be astronomical, this putting off even more potential buyers.
The PS3 still has a lot of work to do to even catch up to the other two systems, let alone make a profit. It now has some decent exclusives coming out for it (I can't wait for Infamous or GoW 3), but it still has to compete against the exclusives on the other two systems, and deal with the fact that crossplatform games sell better on the 360 on an almost 2:1 basis.
