As you probably already know, the latest issue of Nintendo Power blows the doors off of the recently announced sequel to the Wii's slightly disappointing, sword/gun-toting FPS launch title, Red Steel. Now that the mag has landed in a few quivering, anticipatory hands, more details about Red Steel 2 are beginning to surface.
First and foremost, the title will apparently be cel-shaded -- hinted at by the sole piece of concept art we received yesterday, and confirmed by a number of scans which are beginning to creep onto the internets. Also, we recently got confirmation from Nintendo Power itself that the game will be "Wii MotionPlus exclusive," a phrase we can only interpret to mean "you need a MotionPlus dongle to play it." (Are you guys comfortable with calling it a dongle? That's such a lovely word. Don-gle.)
We'll let you know when we hear even more facts about the game. And by facts, we don't mean "my brother's girlfriend's sister's stepmom goes to a beauty parlor where she read about Red Steel 2 while waiting for her bouffant to dry."
[Thanks, Fernando Rocker!]

Cel-shading is a great way to make a game look pretty without needing alot of graphical power. It's a great move for this game actually. The first one just looked bad, maybe they can make it look awesome with Cel-shaded art.
I am interested.

I cant tell if its realistic cel shading a la TF2 or a more anime influenced style. I'll have to see it in motion

I'll never forget when my friend brought his wii over shortly after launch and laughing at how unbelievably bad the first one was in pretty much every aspect.
That being said, if they actually put more than an ounce of effort into 2, I could see myself renting it. I'd have to convince myself to waste money on motion + first though, if this rumor is true.

Well... I really don't trust Ubisoft when it comes to develop Wii games... but they have a small chance now:
Finally a proper Rabbids platformer-adventure game, and Red Steel 2...

It's nice to see that they are developing the game with an engine built specifically for the Wii... and the art style is good. Finally devs are using that art style, celshaded, kinda like TF2, instead of trying to achieve realism.

I think I might actually pick up a Wii this year for this and Rabbids Go Home among other things. Really I can't pass up a Michel Ancel game, and also Red Steel 2 is looking interesting.

As long as Ubisoft allows gamers to skip those in-game chapter FMV to get back to the action, consider me one happy camper and RS 2 a day one purchase!

They should include the first Red Steel as an unlockable, but with fixed IR Pointer controls... the problem is the huge almost-full screen size of the bounding box...
Just include the game with Metroid Prime 3 bounding box and it will be at least somewhat more enjoyable.

Am I the only one that caught the subtle link usage on the phrase "the latest issue of Nintendo Power blows the doors off"? Pure genius.

i wish that the stale first-person shooter genre would die already. they do nothing new and their all same in my opinion(killzone 2 comes to mind).

Even though I haven't played the first Red Steel, this sequel seems
like a buy, if not a rent.

This seems like it could wind up being a really interesting breath into the FPS genre, if they do the sword fighting correctly this time.
I am QUITE pleased that this will be Motion+ exclusive...I really, really want that peripheral to gain market penetration...

You don't need multiplayer to be a great FPS, just ask Metroid Prime and Bioshock.I applaud UbiSoft on their art choice.Spaghetti/samurai westerns are in!

Dongle sounds almost as dirty as Wii. Playing with your dongle enhanced Wii wand strokin to the motion are you?

I can't tell if its too anime, or if its a cool cell shaded style. Hopefully the later.
Plus they need to re-release RS1 with fixed aiming and with updated motionplus support.. That would rock.

I ended up with a copy of Red Steel on my shelf after I picked up the two pack thing that Ubisoft put out in August for No More Heroes.
The game really wouldn't be so bad if the IR controls weren't so bad. I mean, it's more than just the IR controls, but if they just fixed the IR controls, it would be a way better game, and even a solid FPS.
And ultimately, an FPS is what I want. The Motion-Plus is cool, but I want a game where you shoot dudes in the face. Motion controlled swordplay is not as much my thing.

Sounds like Ubisoft is really putting some effort into Red Steel 2. One of the reasons the first Red Steel was poor was because it was rushed in order to make the Wii's launch date. Now that they have a lot more time to work on the game, it should be better.
