Gamestop had a demo of this game on their PS3 kiosk (not sure it was released on PSN) and I thought it was pretty lame. It wasn't the whole game and was really just showing off some fighting mechanics so it doesn't mean the whole game will suck. But, I wasn't all that impressed with the way the game looked in motion or the way it controlled.

No offense but I hope you passed very poor judgement...

I believe the demo is just a challenge room or two (the one they showed from GDC I think), so what you played isn't even a part of the main story....just a "clear x amount of enemies from this room" type of level. I wouldn't hold that against the regular game, which looks a lot more interesting.

I felt the same way when I played it, then a friend showed me how the combat worked with stringing together combos to open up a takedown opportunity etc. In a way, the combat is kind of like the platforming in the new POP - not too difficuly but there is a timing and a flow to it - and more rewards for doing so than POP.
Look for the 'Predator gameplay walkthrough' or approximation of that on GameTrailers and it really shows more of the gameplay - after seeing that I was hoping the kiosk demo would show that, another reason for my initial dissapointment then I saw my friend play it.
Us: How good will it be?
Batman: Eidos knows.
Us: They won't talk
Batman: They'll talk to me

What is that supposed to mean?

Yes it was just showing off the combat. Thats what I said it doesn't mean the whole game would suck. However, it did not look very impressive in motion and it did not control all that well. But, the detective skills is what has attracted me to the game in the first place anyway and not the combat.

Well I haven't played it or anything but from that video the mechanics looks fantastic. Very fluid and in no way repetitive bad guy bashing, which is the biggest concern for any superhero game.
I was very skeptical when this game was first mentioned, but after all these game play videos, the attention to graphical detail (look at the cuts and textures in his suit in the pictures), voice acting, and the obvious desire to create a quality Batman video game, I'm slowly becoming a believer. I'll wait for the reviews, but I might have to pick this up.

What with X-Men Origins: Wolverine coming out tomorrow (From what I hear, better than the movie..since it has little to DO with the movie), Broken Steel for Fallout 3 and Bionic Commando all in a short period of time, I have a lot of work to do if I want to free my time for Batman: Arkham Asylum.
I reserved the Collector's edition of Batman AA when they finally revealed the Batarang design. Can't wait.
That Gamestop PS3 demo is just a limited taste of the Challenge Rooms, and I'd not base any "Oh, I'll buy/not buy" on it alone. Hope it's as good as I'm..um, hoping.

Yeah I played the challenge room demo at target. To me it was a good demo that showed off some of the basic fighting mechanics since you were limited in moves you could do since you couldn't level up your skills like you can in the game which is what I have heard. I liked it though I pulled off some pretty cool counters in the demo. Can't wait for the game to come out though it seems in all respect that it'll be awesome. (at least I hope it will be though)

Looks better and better each time a new vid comes out. What this vid didn't show that I saw earlier today is batman fighting some giant creature and Bane. Batman can jump on the back of the creature and blind him, making him swing his arms around taking out smaller enemies like in God of War 3. With Bane, he can maneuver to the back and rip his tubes out.
So it looks like they're doing everything they can to mix the combat up, since a brawler's most common problem is the combat getting repetitive.

Oh crap, that gameplay reminded me of The Watchmen: The End is Nigh (not a good sign).

watchmen had incredible animations and a pretty good combat system, the only problem was that it was ridiculously repetitive because that's all there was to it, we already know there's crap loads more than fighting to this game

The Bane scene was cooler IMO, but the mechanics look pretty sweet.
The best part, as far as I'm concerned, is that they used (all/some?) of the 90's animated voice talent. SWEET.

I hope the actual game doesn't have that much slo-motion...I feel like I'm watching a bad version of the Matrix.

it really is, that part in the sewers where after punching the one guy it just seamlessly folds into that roll and grabs the other guys leg. Man that's great

Despite being a huge Batman fan, I can't help but to be cynical about the fighting animation's timing: the guy who made the trailer had fun making it more cinematic by rotating the camera all over the place while accelerating the footage's speed from here to there for a more dramatic effect. But what I want to know is if fighting in the game itself would look as if there was as much impact behind each blow.
