You, of course, know Ottumwa, Iowa as the birthplace of actor/raconteur Tom Arnold and M*A*S*H*'s Radar O'Reilly. But were you aware that it's also "The Video Game Capital of the World"? It's true! How did they nab such a lofty distinction? Well, basically, they just called it yesterday afternoon. Yeah, that's apparently all there is to it. Just calling dibs. The next step they want to take on is, apparently, building a Video Game Hall of Fame.
Their basis for the claim? Billy Mitchell scored a Donkey Kong world record at an Ottumwa arcade in 1982. In fact, you can now see that machine for yourself, as The Mitch donated it to the city yesterday. Book your summer holiday early folks!

I never even heard of this douche bag until the King of Kong came out. Ever since then he constantly tries to get on the news with something stupid.

sidenote. i'd bet billy funded that shitty donkeykong movie about him too. sometimes you just need to let go of your one skill. thats like being the pokemon champ, and then making movies about you being an action star. its ridiculous.

Actually, this guy (whose name eludes me) is even more of a character than Billy Mitchell. After watching King of Kongs, I'd guess that it was him that actually took it upon himself to name Ottumwa the so-called "video game capital of the world".
Trust me, he takes his job seriously... a little TOO seriously, in my opinion.

I'm in Dundee and all we have now is Realtime Worlds, third-party sweatshops for ports the original developer couldn't be bothered doing (4J down at Greenmarket) and shitty mobile and casual developers. The real heart was ripped out when DMA became Rockstar North and moved to Edinburgh.
I spoke to RW employees at a conference at Fat Sams and really wasn't impressed by them at all. Rude and had no charisma or enthusiasm.

haha you spoke to them at that conference? There wasn't anyone from Realtime of note really to talk to. So don't use that as an example. Iv meet a few of them time to time they are alright. There's also Proper games down by the water front that have just launched Flock, nice bunch as well. There's also Abertay which must be doing pretty well for itself gaining centre of computer games excellence. Oh and don't forget Ruffian doing crackdown 2.
So for a much unheard of city in the middle of scotland its not doing too bad on the games front.
Oh and i bet Ottumwa doesnt have a Topshop

Do they even have a Walmart, or Gamestop there? Do they know that there have been games made after Donkey Kong?

Okay, even if disregard the fact many of the games of any note have been made outside the US (Japan and the UK mostly), Ottumwa STILL has fuck all to do with ANYTHING in the games industry... Or anything else for that matter.

Um, guys, Ottumwa has been calling itself the 'Video Game Capital of the World' since 1982.
And it's not because of Billy Mitchell, it's because Twin Galaxies (and the entire competitive arcade gaming culture because of it) has been there since late 1981.
Seriously, guys, do some research before you bitch and moan.

Never!
And besides, that'd mean they'd be the Arcade Game Capital, of which we'd have no problem with as no-one plays those things anymore.

Yup, here's what their website has to say (twingalaxies.com):
"Then, on March 19, 1983, players from around North America came to Twin Galaxies to join representatives of Atari, the Amusement Game Manufacturers Association (AGMA), RePlay Magazine and Video Games Magazine as Iowa Governor Terry Branstad acknowledged Twin Galaxies' role as the official scorekeeper and crown Ottumwa, Iowa as the "Video Game Capital of the World.""

What a terrible article and lousy excuse for journalism. Do you guys bother to read press releases at all?
The basis for this idea is not because Billy Mitchell set his old Donkey Kong score there. It was because competitive video gaming started in that town. Twin Galaxies original arcade was in that town, as covered in several movies and, yep, in the press release. The old DK score that Billy set there back in the day was one of hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of World Record scores set by dozens and dozens and dozens of gamers.
Due to all of that back in the day, Ottumwa declared itself Video Game Capital of the World back then and the world went with it. On top of that, it was where Twin Galaxies, which is still going strong today, started. You simply call this "an Ottumwa arcade" somehow missing the idea totally.
In the future, before giving "coverage" to a story like this... try to get at least one fact in the mix. When you actually READ press releases and bother to search for even one crumb of information you discover things called FACTS that make for a good story.
Instead, your pathetic and irresponsible excuse for journalism now means that people think this is some King of Kong-fed Billy thing, and not a tribute to Twin Galaxies and all it started there 27 years ago.

While I agree with you that the town has a respectable right to call itself the 'VG capital' (though I think 'Arcade capital' would be more fit), I don't see how Joystiq's article constitutes bad journalism. It's only a blog, it's not the NYT.

Billy Mitchel is awesome. Awesome in the way that Army of Two is awesome, that PBR is awesome and that stuff from the Skymall cataloger are awesome.
Seriously, guys like Billy Mitchell make the world fun and interesting. Billy needs to keep being Billy and annoying the shit out of people. That's what makes this little micro-niche of competition what it is.

I honestly don't see why so many people hate Billy Mitchell. He is hilarious in the same way that David Brent (Ricky Gervais) is funny. His crazy, over-the-top ego, his lame jokes, that USA tie. I just love his whole "King of the Nerds" shtick (but it seems that I'm the only one).
