Where the hell did you get the shoulder button thing from? That (ancient) mock up created by not-Sony? Way to jump the gun.

Switching to this format makes no sense. The PS3, VAIO, Cybershot cameras all use Pro Duo seamlessly, why alienate the PSP?

What is with Sony and their incisive need to use proprietary storage formats. I know the community will keep my honest, but to my knowledge the ONLY things that use Memory Stick is Sony products. Why can’t they just use SDHC like everyone else? Do they REALLY make that much money on the folks that are forced to buy their memory because the liked some gadget? I wonder if it is worth the cost of those who don’t buy their products because they don’t want to get locked into their proprietary crap.

Agreed...this makes NO sense at all, especially with respect to the PS3. One of the major advantages of the PS3 is that you can upgrade the HDD using any SATA laptop hard drive (I dumped a 320 GB in there). Why doesn't the PSP not get the same treatment?

I guess none of you realize that new cards are on the way. Both SD and Pro Duo. The main reason is bothbof them will be able to hit sizes of 2 TB and the read/write speeds are faster. Also SD has a memory limit of 2GB. The current ones you see are SDHC and they don't work on older hardware.

Exactly. With larger sized cards comes larger files comes the need for faster transfer speeds. Eventually you just need a new format.

I would imagine 99.99% of their customer base doesn't spend more then half a second questioning what memory format the product uses, they say Sony, it must be good.

then they buy it.

It'd be a mistake to kill the UMD off completely, unless, as previously suggested, they start putting up PSP games for sale on the PSN store en-masse (the majority of them, at least). Backwards compatibility seems to be a greater priority for handhelds, especially new handhelds.

It does seem like the PSP GO! name may fit this system considering it will only use flash memory and probably much better battery life than the previous models.

My main question is that is this is a PSP2 or just another refresh of the PSP? If it is a PSP2, I would still like compatibility with PSP games, either UMDs or digital.

Well, I say why not have two slots, one for Duo and one for the newer format (like the DSi has but without the gay iPhone wannabe features) which can also be used for games. That means I could either have a game in it AND a big Memory Stick, or I could adopt the new format and use that for music and videos. At least then I'd have a choice.

What the hell am I even doing? I'm actually talking as if these rumors of rumors on top of vague rumors might be true. Cripes, I'll just wait until E3.

You should do a Dear Abbey type column. As much as I'd like to continue referring to you as el burlap sacko, I suppose it could be 'Dear Serp' or something.

Sure hope the new format is just BS rumor. MS Pro Duo is, to me, close to the perfect size. Get much smaller and the blasted things are gonna get lost easily. I would actually prefer bigger, more like Compact Flash, as it's harder to lose. I mean c'mon, how much real estate is really being lost to that card slot?

I really hope they aren't making the new cards smaller...

Dear Serp,

I'm a good looking guy. I've got some premature greys but the girls say it adds to my swag. OK the deal is this- I'm kind of a big deal at work, and this girl who works underneath me, well, I love her. That's not easy for a guy to say, and it should mean something that I'm putting it out there. She's married though. Her husband is a loser. She keeps telling me that she will leave him. What do I do? I've risked my career for her, even moved to a different town to be closer to her. One of our associates noticed what was going on and told her husband. If the rumors get to far I could be canned! But I love her.
What do I do?

Signed,

Jilted on Joystiq

The new PSP should have 4 card slots and a RAID controller.

Admit it, that would be awesome.

I sure hope all these rumors are false. I've got a lot of games; I'm not getting rid of them! It's the very same reason I have no interest in the DSi!

Haha, sorry, that was a little harsh. But seriously, you don't have to get rid of anything, no matter what Sony does.

True enough. I'm just hoping if there's a "next" PSP (as in, games are not playable on an older PSP) that the old games will be compatible in some way. It adds a ton of value.

The Psp Go! should be more powerful than the current psp. I mean this in the way if it was powerful enough to bring even just older ps2 games portable, such as FF X, which is a great game must i say, then the DS would be dead. They could also make these games pretty cheap and still make a huge profit because the game is already made. Say they charge 25$ for it, then they probably make 20$ per purchase because the game is already made! Another thing is they SHOULD use internal flash memory, such as an 8GB model and a 16GB model as the rumor suggests, but they should also have optional memory card slots. I say this because then you vould put in memory cards if you want it bigger, or you could just stay with an 8GB. If they had 2 memory card slots like a ps2 that would also be sweet. I would definatly buy one with 16GB internal memory and then put in 2 32GB memory cards in the 2 slots! ;) One other thing, they might need to find a new kind of memory card because the Memory stick Pro Duo is maxed out at 32GB.
