Video: Comparing filter options for Marvel vs. Capcom 2
With a demo already out (exclusively on PSN) for this summer's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 revival, we thought it would be a great idea to compare the game's three graphic filter options in glorious HD video.
Originally, our excuse for making the video was to play MvC2 at work, but it turned out to be pretty informative. The filters -- which can be changed at any time-- start extremely "jaggy" in the classic mode, but get progressively softer on the eyes from crisp to smooth. In the end, the consensus around "the office" is that MvC2 is so fast paced, it won't matter which filter you have it set to. But for arguments sake, which filter do you prefer?

I prefer my ps2 one because it cost me 80 bucks. Of course my brother traded a DS for it instead.
Johnn11 @ May 1st 2009 9:17PM
Good thing I still have my Dreamcast, with this game. I canb play this whenever I want with the most fluent controller, at least for this game.
mr nimblewick @ May 2nd 2009 12:18PM
Yes, the game that single-handedly broke all of my dreamcast controllers.
ice~ @ May 1st 2009 4:39PM
classic it is!
Lars @ May 2nd 2009 11:13PM
Agreed. Crisp isn't too bad either tho. For comparison's sake, I'm playing on a 42" Bravia.
Too much antialiasing makes my eyes bleed.
Mr. L @ May 1st 2009 4:40PM
I prefer the filter that doesn't require a second controller to play the damn demo. I mean...how...wha.....come on!
elpmis @ May 1st 2009 4:46PM
I rofl'd
Orex @ May 1st 2009 5:06PM
You actualy rolled on the floor? Dudeeee (joke)
n e ways, i lol'ed lol
handlas @ May 1st 2009 5:45PM
ya...it would of been nice to actually play the demo. I only have one controller so I can't. I would of even been satisfied to just get in the game and have no one to play but I love how you can't even do that unless you have a second controller.
Dirty @ May 1st 2009 7:02PM
Same here, big disappointment.
DarkTetsuya @ May 1st 2009 8:41PM
THIS.
No seriously, Capcom?
traceur_ryuk_shinigami @ May 1st 2009 11:34PM
I just plugged in my rock band guitar, lol
LatinoLA1 @ May 2nd 2009 2:10AM

I can't see any difference in this small video, I can't wait to try it out in 1080p though! Can you tell a diffrence when it's on the TV as compared to the youtube videos resolution?
Xav de Matos @ May 1st 2009 4:54PM
This video is raw H.264 HD footage in 720p resolution. Click that little fullscreen icon to make it bigger if the video looks too small.
doom saber @ May 1st 2009 9:34PM
You can tell the difference. My friends and I played the demo last last and crisp looks like crap animated; we played it on a giant hd tv set. The problem is that despite the fliter blurs the pixels you can still see blocks which results in some rough animation for certain characters.
WE changed it to classic and it was more easy on the eyes
Xav de Matos @ May 2nd 2009 12:49AM
@doom Uh, press play. It's auto tuned to play in HD. No extra work needed. Unless you want to fullscreen.
doom saber @ May 2nd 2009 4:04AM
At Xav
If you read my comment, I'm talkin about the actual demo and not the crappy youtube video. I have downloaded it yesterday from the PSN and from what my friends and I have seen, crisp is pretty bad whereas we have to change itto classic.
The youtube video doesn't do justice with the quality difference since it tends to blur everythin' up especially being a low resloution streaming site, "HD" or not.
doom saber @ May 2nd 2009 4:14AM
I also have seen the video in HD prior to the original comment I have made and as said before, Youtube is bad even if it has an "HD"option.
The HD opion isn't true HD since the vid still comes out blurry. It is not suprising since youtube vids are small considerin they for ppl who wants to view things as they go. What I mean is that you can't really judge the three graphics unless you have actually seen the game/demo on the 360 and ps3 system.
Xav de Matos @ May 2nd 2009 3:53PM
@doom Actually that was my mistake, that comment was supposed to be for MrKlorox.
Fade2blac @ May 1st 2009 4:47PM
They all look the same?
RonaldoMoon @ May 1st 2009 4:54PM
Did you guys not watch the video in HD or are your eyes broken?
MrKlorox @ May 1st 2009 9:47PM
He probably watched the default, non hd-capable one Joystiq posted on this very page instead of the one you get after a number of clicks on the actual video.
In reality, Joystiq was lazy as hell with the presentation.
OTAM @ May 2nd 2009 12:34PM
They all look the same to me. I'm a regular monitor though.
I also play on an SDTV,like most people. The amount of HD gamers aren't as much as you people think outside of Joystiq.
venompsx @ May 1st 2009 4:50PM
I prefer the Smooth option so far.
pete @ May 1st 2009 4:47PM
i cant tell the difference unless they stand still......which makes no sense in this game
Lakkus @ May 1st 2009 4:49PM
smooth looked the best to me
popozao @ May 1st 2009 4:51PM
Why would you release a demo I can't even fucking play, and then show videos of it???? For god's sake Capcom, WHYYY!!!!??????
Mayne @ May 1st 2009 4:56PM
Yeah, I figured it wouldn't really matter once the pace of battle kicks in. I'll probably just stick with classic, since I have a fondness for pixelated sprites.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ May 1st 2009 4:57PM
Everyone is complaining the demo is local versus only. Yes, it sucks, but that was how the SF2THDR demo was, so I wasn't expecting anything more from Capcom.
Also...
Rogue/Cammy/Spiderman ftw!
cuteSAVAGE @ May 1st 2009 5:20PM
And if it's any consolation, the Bionic Command demo doesn't even let you play with friends, rendering it useless to people with friends. Everyone loses?
Latin_Trident @ May 1st 2009 5:00PM
I prefer CRISP, like my KFC Chicken!
CaptainProtonX @ May 1st 2009 5:06PM
I prefer smooth, like a vagina.
The Dark Wayne @ May 1st 2009 5:26PM
I like original recipe.....vagina
Candyman :-P @ May 1st 2009 6:24PM
I'm loving the no video comparison filter this article is using. It's buttah.
MrKlorox @ May 1st 2009 10:03PM
Cue scene in Drawn Together where Foxxy Love shows Wooldoor how to masturbate.

CaptainProtonX @ May 1st 2009 5:01PM
All the filters are ass.
You know what helps? Not using sprites that are nearly or over 15 years old.
Oh, and widescreen is ass too. The tight quarters that makes this game hectic is gone when you have so much vacant space. That, and you see graphics glitches that were hidden by 4:3.
But...WTF? It's Capcom. King of Ports.
jynxycat @ May 1st 2009 5:32PM
Look how long it took them to release HDR. You want redone sprites for ALL of Mvc2 ? We'll be playing on a Ps4 by then.
CaptainProtonX @ May 1st 2009 5:37PM
The sprites already looked like shit back when the game was released. Now it looks like shit in Indian food in HD.
UhMilhouse @ May 3rd 2009 4:14PM
Opening up the screen space so much makes the characters seem so small. It takes away any heft or weight that they may have once had. It's cool they're releasing this as a lot of fans have wanted it, but I think they're taking a big step backwards by releasing it this way. It seems like a quick half-ass job to satisfy the people who wanted widescreen support.
PN04 @ May 4th 2009 10:25PM
Actually the 16:9 presentation is only cosmetic. the characters dont actually use the extra space opened up. Using Strider, if you just back to do the wall grab you'd find that your character dosent jump to the edge of the screen he stops at the 4:3 boarder. Also you can back all the way up to the "edge" of the screen and there's still like 2 or 3 inches of room behind your character who is supposedly all the way in the corner.
And yes, both of the filters suck balls, Classic may be jaggy but at least it's not a smeared ugly mess that offends the eyes. It's an old game, you either redraw it or you present it as it is. Their supposed HD filters blow ass.
Candyman :-P @ May 1st 2009 5:07PM
I prefer smooth, like my Hennessy. But whatever you choose, the game will still look like butt. Even the character selection screen looks like butt.
Zertoss @ May 1st 2009 5:07PM
That smooth filter looks like the world around me when I take my glasses off: blurry. Crisp didn't look much better to me.
I'll have to try it on my own TV to say for sure, but from this video, I think Classic actually looks best.
BUGz @ May 1st 2009 5:12PM
id prefer the filter that shows 360 footage
War @ May 1st 2009 5:17PM
Are they keeping the horrible soundtrack for the release? :-s
WhatIsThatThing @ May 1st 2009 6:18PM
I'm sorry, you had a small typo in there.
I think you meant to say, "Will the most awesome soundtrack of any game ever for the release :-)"
Thanks I could help, bro.
WhatIsThatThing @ May 1st 2009 6:45PM
Unfortunately, I had a big typo there. I meant to type, "Are they keeping the most awesome soundtrack for any game ever made for the release? :-)"
Forgive my lapse in writing ability there.
phinnvr6 @ May 1st 2009 7:18PM
Yea the soundtrack is pretty bad, the music got kinda annoying after playing for a while. The game is as fun as ever too play though overall
stormtrooper190 @ May 1st 2009 5:18PM
the demo is not out yet in europe but you sed i would be out
