Rumor: Next Call of Duty possibly set in Vietnam
Treyarch's Noah Heller mentioned shortly before the release of Call of Duty: World at War that the developer was probably going to lay off World War II for a while, leaving many to wonder what the stage of operations for the next CoD would be. If a report from That VideoGame Blog proves accurate, Activision may be taking the franchise to a much groovier era -- the 1960s. (Anno Domini, that is -- though who are we to assume 1960 B.C. wasn't equally groovy?)
TVGB is reporting that an anonymous, "trusted" source informed them Activision's been looking to license "Vietnam War era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music." The source mentioned that Heller (and, assumedly, Treyarch) is involved in the aforementioned license hunting. As with all rumors spawned by anonymous tipsters, we encourage you to take this rumor with a two-ton boulder of salt -- just to be safe, we've contacted Activision for a comment.

Meh, I'll stick with Infinity Ward thankyouverymuch.
Kayi @ May 3rd 2009 4:22PM
Meh, I'll stick to enjoying not being a fanboy and enjoy games for its pros and cons, and I can think of plenty for CoD4. More for WaW but many for CoD4 nonetheless.
brickwalker0 @ May 3rd 2009 4:26PM
im not sure if its so much "fanboyism" as much as it is good/poor development and production value.
its known very well that Infinity Ward's take on the Call of Duty franchise is favored by many more people than Treyarch's.
Cesaria @ May 3rd 2009 4:31PM
I can safely say that CoD4 is one of my favorite shooters of all time. Not from fanboyism or anything, but there were just so many great moments in the single player campaign that actually felt new to me. WaW just didn't have that impact. I completely attribute that to Infinity Ward. WaW is pretty fun, but CoD4 is a benchmark in modern shooters.
Kayi @ May 3rd 2009 4:34PM
True, but it seems that most people are letting their inner fanboy, overtake their logical thing. People say that they copied IW, well they pretty much have no choice or their publisher Act. would be pissed. After CoD4's success it would only make sense but to continue the formula. I too favor IW to Treyarch, but I'm able to put my opinion aside to see WaW for what it is. An above average game, about a B- game IMO. They've supported their most popular game mode in their map packs (Hell Hounds FTW) and Co-Op is a lW lot of fun with friends. I may think CoD4 kicks WaW's ass but I still am able to see it's pros instead of focusing on its cons.
Kayi @ May 3rd 2009 4:38PM
Sorry, keyboard is breaking X/ Overall, WaW is a lot of fun to play. IMO, CoD4's single player is nothing too special. I've seen better FPS campaigns but apparently CoD4's is the most original one ever made. The sniper mission was as intense as hell though I'll give it that.
HitNRun @ May 3rd 2009 5:57PM
I don't think anyone's saying that Treyarch "copied" anything. They were hired to create decent titles to keep annual revenue flowing in between the much better IW games. If anything, they don't copy them enough.
That doesn't mean people who follow games enough to even know what a developer is have to give equal time. A dozen news stories flash by on this site about companies you don't care about every day. There are only so many hours in the day and dollars in the wallet. Although I admit I would take more interest in a shooter that isn't set in WW2.
Obie @ May 3rd 2009 6:05PM
Preferring a game from a certain company has hardly anything to do with fanboyism, but just personal taste. I played both COD4 and WAW and I thought WAW was a pale imitation (except for the very fun Zombie Nazi mode).
It's just my opinion, so quit freaking out over it Kaji.
st3v3n @ May 3rd 2009 4:05PM
Jungle zombies!
JontheNinja @ May 3rd 2009 4:05PM
Oh God I have wanted this for so long SO LONG.
ALL I CAN IMAGINE IS PLATOON.
WiredKnight @ May 3rd 2009 4:20PM
All you _should_ be imagining is Apocalypse Now.
BananaBoat @ May 3rd 2009 4:22PM
Would it be so terribly wrong if I were imagining M.A.S.H right now?
michas_pi @ May 3rd 2009 4:45PM
@BananaBoat:
Yes, because M*A*S*H took place during the Korean War.
Mazrael @ May 3rd 2009 5:06PM
An A-Team mission, where you get set up (which leads on to the series)..
IW should be the ones to do it, even if it's an 'easter egg' mission
Micheal82 @ May 3rd 2009 5:16PM
What about Full Metal Jacket.
"This is my rifle this is my gun! This is for fighting this is for fun!"

"The deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle. It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. You will become dead marines and then you will be in a world of shit because marines are not allowed to die without permission. Do you maggots understand?"
Alex @ May 3rd 2009 5:35PM
I'm thinking more Forrest Gump...
Because I haven't seen Platoon.
The Dark Wayne @ May 3rd 2009 6:54PM
MASH did take place in Korea stupid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M*A*S*H_(TV_series)
BananaBoat @ May 3rd 2009 7:53PM
...I realize that M.A.S.H took place in Korea.
That doesn't stop me from thinking about M.A.S.H.
Skaz @ May 3rd 2009 9:18PM
Hence your wrongness? That show really was supposed to remind you of Vietnam anyways.
BananaBoat @ May 3rd 2009 9:36PM
*leery eyes*
MarkHawk @ May 3rd 2009 4:15PM
I hope they can pull it off. It's a tough conflict to turn into a game.
Jomolungma @ May 3rd 2009 6:36PM
I agree with you, from a story sense. For sure there are combat options that are ripe for a game - air-mobile cavalry, deep jungle, ambushes, water and shore operations. The tough thing though is finding a good reason for being there - after all, the US didn't really have one and we spent years there. It might be interesting if they approach it from a We Were Soldiers perspective, with a beloved and brilliant warrior on one side leading his mean against the same from the other. That might work on the macro level, and then you can throw in some Platoon-type story lines among the grunts. Or, you can go a completely different way and throw in something like Apocalypse Now, where you play a single soldier who has a larger mission, but gets caught up in all of these skirmishes on his way to his goal. Lots of options, none of them slam dunks for a good game, but I think they can pull it off. I hope so.
genpacker @ May 3rd 2009 4:16PM
Hopefully we are moving more and more toward the Korean Conflict and I can finally get that M*A*S*H game I always wanted.
WiredKnight @ May 3rd 2009 4:21PM
If you can play as a medic, I'm all in.
BananaBoat @ May 3rd 2009 4:22PM
We read each others minds as I was typing.
Spoooooooky
MrKlorox @ May 3rd 2009 9:05PM
Ah man. My dad had that MASH board game a while back. Can't remember what it was like though. I was six or so the last time I looked at it.
Mr Khan @ May 3rd 2009 4:19PM
Seems the logical progression to me, although it does leave out Korea (as history often tends to do)
The Dark Wayne @ May 3rd 2009 4:21PM
well the already have generic asian music from CoD 5.
The Baron @ May 3rd 2009 4:22PM
Yeah, it was suprising for me to learn that US soldiers fought the Chinese army in open warfare. It basically never gets a mention in anything.
Skaz @ May 3rd 2009 9:21PM
It wasn't the real official "Chinese Army" but a group of "ragtag volunteers" that China sponsored. There was still plenty of war before that point to fill up a game.
WiredKnight @ May 3rd 2009 4:20PM
We won't know for sure until they license Ride of the Valkyries.
michas_pi @ May 3rd 2009 4:47PM
And Fortunate Son.
Excuse me, I have to go watch Forrest Gump again.
MikeB @ May 4th 2009 10:24AM
This is about Apocalypse Now, not Forest Gump.
Bonus points if they also use "The End" by The Doors in the closing sequence.
The Dark Wayne @ May 3rd 2009 4:22PM
That seems really sweet, while I do enjoy World War 2 stuff, it is starting to get tired now, a change of scene would be nice, especially a setting that's only been done in a few other games. Compared to Vietnam the modern setting is almost as overdone as WWII. I think this Vietnam setting could make me care about the franchise again
Cesaria @ May 3rd 2009 4:27PM
OMG, yes please! I've been hoping for a game set in Vietnam for awhile. I'm am completely burnt out on WW2 games.
The Dark Wayne @ May 3rd 2009 4:29PM
me too I'm really intrigued by this. Vietnam offers such a different kind of combat but still close enough to tradition that it's a breath of fresh air without stepping too far away. Wow the more and more I think about this the more excited about it I get
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 3rd 2009 6:20PM
didn't they have heavy use of flamethrowers in that war? in which case treyarch would be perfect for it. and the banzai attackers are somewhat like the viet cong. i like it.
The Dark Wayne @ May 3rd 2009 9:43PM
Man I hope we get to do another plane mission like in CoD 4 and 5 only this time we get to do a napalm bombing run!
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 3rd 2009 11:15PM
there was no plane mission in 5...
but yes, that would be epic.
Yuccadude @ May 3rd 2009 11:58PM
Plane mission in 5 involved a night flight mission shooting at boats and Japanese Zeroes...
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 4th 2009 12:08AM
oh yeah, i forgot about that. i never did get that trophy :(
Jrinswand @ May 3rd 2009 4:32PM
Cuban music? That can only mean one thing: the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Gee, I bet that'll make for an awesome video game. *rolls eyes sarcastically*
That's almost as good an idea as making a game about Fallujah. Hell, while we're at it, why don't we make a game about the war in Kosovo or the Rwandan genocides?
Sora @ May 3rd 2009 6:26PM
Bay of Pigs was nearly 50 years ago. Fallujah was what, five or six? I'm pretty sure sensitivity isn't much of an issue anymore with Bay of Pigs.
MystileArmor @ May 3rd 2009 4:32PM
"Paint It Black" anyone?
Snap Count @ May 3rd 2009 4:33PM
How are they going to sell a game to Americans about a war that they lost....
I Keeeed I Keeeed, I'm just a stupid Canadian.
why not the LS2LS7? @ May 3rd 2009 4:35PM
"We didn't lose Vietnam, it was a tie!"

Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ May 3rd 2009 5:12PM
Well, you noticed how Vietnam War(the one US lost) movies are all sad and gloomy horror of war types while WW2's tend to have this patriotic 'jolly good show' attitude? Given the much more serious attitude Treyarch have taken in WaW where both sides are essentially monsters, I think they can pull off a Vietnam game much better than IW could.
WiredKnight @ May 3rd 2009 6:14PM
Especially if you consider the almost Silent Hill nature of Jacob's Ladder.
