The Old Republic dev diary shows how to make a planet
21
Developers of licensed Star Wars products who decide to stray from the franchise's immutable canon often find themselves suffering the slings, arrows and extendible plastic weaponry of their target audience. Fortunately, it looks like the team behind BioWare's upcoming far-far-away MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, are keeping the Word of Lucas firmly in their minds as they build the title's virtual environments. Check out the video above to see BioWare's incredible attention to detail in action!

Watching that video makes me hope with every Star Wars-loving-molecule in my body that this will come to consoles.
I know the possibility is there, I just hope they'll actually do it.

How about a one off up front fee of $200?
Should about cover a few years of sub's n expansions.
Or you want a freemium model?

I'd rather pay for expansions/DLC every so often, rather than one set monthly fee for everything. That way, even if I'm paying *more* in the long run, I'm only paying for the things I actually want, when I'm playing the game and when I want the content.
It's not so much the price of the subscription I dislike, just the fact I'd constantly be paying for one single game, even if I'm not playing for it for a few months.

The detail is all and good, but I'm really hoping for large, vast areas. Adding to that, no restrictions on where you can and cannot go (terrain wise). The detail looked good, and the players looked less cartoony, all good there.
Was anyone else freaked out by the shemale at the very beginning? At least I know where they are getting the Hutt inspiration.

Im kinda worried about the terrain. I want it to be more open than WoW, but i dont want it to be like SWG where you walk, literally walk without any change in animation directly up 90 degree angle cliff faces

I just hope that they don't make the game's graphics pretty enough that only the highest end computers can play it when it launches
One Star Wars MMO already made that mistake (and its developer repeated said mistake with the launch of its next MMO, Everquest II).
Also, this is going to be an MMO, and not an instance-everything game like Guild Wars, right? It almost sounds to me like it isn't...

They weren't that bad when they came out in 2003; the game pre-dated Half-Life 2, the measuring stick for graphics for the last 5 or so years.
The other shoe was the number of textures it loaded into memory. SWG loaded a LOT of textures... As I understand it, every clothing item for every NPC in a city area was loaded separately.

I have to say I'm getting really really anxious on this. It looks like it's going to be great, the graphics are stylaized sort of like Team Fortress 2 kinda thing to keep the spec down so it can run on anything but at the same time look good in a sort of cartoonish kinda way. As for PC Gaming not being covered that's not entirely true, MMO details are covered (I just wish they would talk about PC games some more.)

This game is looking better all the time...and that is a very good thing. Looks like I'll be sweeping back and forth between LOTRO and this game.
