The classic brain bender Myst has arrived for iPhone and iPod Touch, notes WhatTheyPlay. The $6 app is a hefty 700MB, so the developers at Cyan Worlds probably aren't kidding when they state the "original Myst sights and sounds have been meticulously re-assembled ... in a format where a simple touch or swipe moves you through the world."
The game features the full Myst experience -- allegedly "better than original Myst" -- with auto-save, bookmarking and (most importantly) quick access to the hint guide. We haven't had a chance to check it out, so let us know how Cyan Worlds did porting the game for portable play.

Maybe I'll see what all the fuss is about since this series refuses to die. It must be decent.

The first game is awesome, at least it was at the time. I think other than the puzzles, the music and atmosphere sticks with a lot of players long after they played it.
If I had an iPhone, I'd be buying this again.

Just played it, it's damn nice. Moving left and right 'slides' the screen like when you're looking at pictures. I audio is a little jarring, since the game is so old, but yeah, it's WAY better than the original game was. I love it!

I dunno if the audio was "jarring," but it was always out of synch in the fmv sequences when I originally played it. 'Course I played it on the Panasonic 3DO (yeah, I admit it, I bought one).
I don't recall much ambient sound in the game, though, so that may be described as "jarring."

I'm a huge fan of the Myst series...even Uru...so I felt I should bring this up, even though I am sure you're well aware:
The screenshot you used (or were given) is from Myst III: Exile. Which, when looking back over the series, is probably my favorite of the bunch.

man, for such a fan of the series, you really noobed all over yourself with that comment.
The screenshot is clearly from the Stoneship Age of the original Myst.

I could be wrong, but it looks like that pic is from Riven, Myst's sequel.

I don't know if it's changed since this comment was originally posted, but the photo shows Myst.

Too bad -- a "RealMyst" version (the fully 3D-navigatible version) with the iPhone motion controls would probably be awesome.
I don't think anyone's actually taken advantage of the freeform "window into another world" interface that should be possible with the iPhone.

Also, I think Myst III or IV would work best on the iphone (III moreso than IV since they ruined IV with all that new-age bullshit and shitty acting near the end, and I have no desire to see it reiterated in any form), because of the ability to rotate the camera.
Riven is the best, though.
Remember when you figured out that puzzle with the animal shapes? You know which one I'm talking about. Not spoiling it for anybody, though.

Played for an hour last night and have to say it's very immersing, esp. for iPhone. Good value because the game is atmospheric, detailed and deep.
Pros: The user experience moving through the world and interacting w/ objects like flipping through journals and sliding levers works and gives he game a fresh feel. Sound design still strong.
Con: The graphics are a little compromised (water looks like a tarp)

I wonder if anyone else here used the ten-step method (or however many steps it was) to finish the game... boom, start to finish in less than 5 minutes.
Though I did beat it legitimately prior to that.

I did that too once you figure out how, it's kind of funny the solution is there the whole time but really you have no way of knowing it until you've beaten the game.

I picked it up yesterday after the news hit the Myst community internally, and it's really quite well done. It does take a while to download and install, but they're definitely not kidding when they say it's the original content at its best (I have no other releases but the PC/Mac ones to compare it to, but it definitely holds up).
The images are nice and crisp (though the auto-zoom for manipulating some of the smaller puzzle controls does give away that they're using images no larger than the display resolution, because they get blurry when zoomed in), the audio is as rich as I think the made-in-1993 originals will allow by today's standards (it ain't Dolby Surround), and unlike the original release (and even the masterpiece Edition), the video playback is practically seamless... the boxes that appeared in the other versions because of compression and color differences are almost entirely gone.
Despite having a lot of small controls because it was built for a mouse and not a finger, the game is still very easy to control. Obviously, smearing your fingers all over the screen won't get you very accurate results, but it's not an exercise in frustration to get the right hotspot, and the aforementioned auto-zoom does help a lot with the tiny interfaces.
The game isn't flawless, but it only has minor issues in my opinion, and they're not terribly distracting to the gameplay. I'm not sure if it's unique to the 1st Gen iPod Touch, but the screen does occasionally flash black when going between video playback and still imagery, and the audio can sometimes hiccup if the same sound effect is present in several screens and you're navigating through them quickly.
Ultimately, I'm just glad I finally have the game in a format that doesn't require me to resort to a VM or Boot Camp to play it. New Macs have been unable to run Myst since the Intel switch, and Leopard even makes it impossible to run on PowerPC machines, because every other release is still reliant on Apple's Classic emulator in OS X. As much as I'd love to see Riven make the jump to the iPhone platform (and finally be free from the shackles of 8-bit compression), it's a massive game in every sense of the term, and I think I'd rather see Cyan roll out their earlier titles - like Manhole and Cosmic Osmo - first, since they're smaller and simpler. I wouldn't exactly argue with a Riven port either, though.
Seriously, for 6 bucks, you can't beat it with a stick.

Yup. A few good places to start would be mystcommunity.com (the obvious choice), uruobsession.com, and the mystonline.com forums.
I'm intrigued by your surprise, though... there are communities for stranger and more niche things than Myst on the vast tubes of the interweb.

Let's see Cosmic Osmo on iPhone. Or how about just a HyperCard emulator!?!
