Honestly, I'm kind of confused as to why everyone is super excited about this game coming out. A relatively unknown fact about this game: it's in most worthwhile arcades already! When I saw the demo coming out being big news, I was stumped as to why people didn't just go play it in arcades where they can try it out but with more characters available.

Sure, it's great that we'll have online play and (hopefully) leaderboards, but this game is already in the arcades and on other consoles. It's definitely good that it's coming out so that it will be more convenient for people to play, but I don't understand why people are as excited about this game as they are.

And this post is coming from an owner of the Xbox MvC2, who was disappointed about the glitchy BC play. I'm definitely going to be buying it, but it's just not at the top of my list.

Do you live in California or New York? 'Cause people in those states tend to not know that (good) arcades are sparse. No arcades means no MvC2. With the PS2 version being sold for $80 and the DreamCast and Xbox's controllers being jokes, it's time for a new incarnation.

So there's the reason for excitement.

Down-voted to the extreeeme!!!

Arcades do not exist in most parts of the world. The UK only has *one* real arcade left, and it's in London. You expect me to travel hundreds of miles just to play this everyday when I could simply buy it on XBLA and play it in the comfort of my home?

I live in Olympia, Wa, actually. We have the smallest arcade ever in the mall, but they still managed to get an MvC2 cab. And I think that the game plays just fine on the Xbox controller, but not as well as on an arcade stick (obviously).

heh. I have a MvC2 machine at my local mall arcade that I can simply walk to. I'm totally awesome.

Having said that, the arcade experience is pretty much dead and the only way to get a good one on one match is to bring a friend along. That's why this version of the game is so appealing, not only can everyone play it on their respected consoles, but you can instantly play others online.

i have to agree and say arcades are going extinct at an alarming rate, but i do believe when you say arcades carry this game... oh and the demo, can't play it with only 1 controller, WTF!?

Even if arcades were still popular, which they haven't been for about 15 years (except, apparently, in your town), what difference would it make? Street Fighter II was a huge hit on the SNES even though the game was installed five times in every arcade in the country at the time. And yes... I'm going back to the SNES era, since that's about the last time that arcades mattered worth a damn. Even if there were five MvC2 machines in town, why would I want to drive somewhere and feed money to a machine? In a few rounds, I'll have spent more than I would have to download the thing to begin with.

I don't understand what you aren't understanding. The re-release of a fantastic game, upgraded for new hardware, and sold at a bargain price... to be honest, the reasons to be excited are so obvious that I feel like I'm explaining why five is greater than four. It just is.

Well, that's arcades, and not at home, where one may replace any malfunctioning controls. And it's online. This game passed up online TWICE!

Besides, looking for loose change is overated.

I'm not super excited for this game because I've never played it before. I thought it was weird as well, because plenty of people were acting like the fact that it's not coming to the Wii was some huge defeat and significant event in the console wars. I argued that other than the raving fan base on gaming blogs, this game really isn't a big deal at all for majority of console owners and I still feel that way.

Someone made a rebuttal that because tons of people play it in the arcade he goes to in Chinatown that it obviously has huge appeal still. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a real arcade that wasn't at an amusement park. The people still going to arcades to hack vids are a pretty niche group of folks.

Not meant to disparage this game at all, just my observations.

I guarantee you that you will find people actively playing this on Live and the PSN.

I also guarantee you that you will not find people actively playing this in the arcade in anywhere other than California or New York.

Arcades are dead in every other part of the US. Sad but true.

Back in the day we'd go to Tilt every Friday and Saturday and play MvC2 with about 15 other people from 6pm til close. I bet you I can go to that same Tilt and if I do find the same MvC2 machine, I bet you at least 1 button or joystick direction on each side does not work anymore. I can also bet you that the arcade will be a ghost town and I won't find those 15 people I used to play the game with for hours at a time.

So those filters are just filters, then, and not updated sprites?

The only way they could get it out that quick, considering the time they took on SFIITHDR

I thought it was cool that they updated the sprites for SFIIHD... but am I the only one who found the new sprites sort of jarring when paired with the old jerky character animation? Somehow, the lower rez sprites mask the animation better, I think.

That said, it would cost a fortune to redraw all the MvC sprites. I can't imagine how many thousands there must be...

I think the SSF2THDR sprites are fine. When I'm playing, it doesn't really cross my mind as to how they look, since the game is moving along too fast anyway.

And yes about the MvC2 sprites. Redoing all of those characters would've probably taken 2-3 times as long as SF2HDR took.

I did a very quick Google search of Austin arcades, and there are at least 3 within city limits. I tend to think that arcades are more common than people think in many major areas. I recently took a trip down to Portland, OR, and managed to find two really great arcades within 45min of the border.

The point is, it already is available at home, as it has been for a long time. The older consoles that have the game definitely have a larger install base, so people could already own the game if they wanted to. Sure, the price being lower will allow more people to buy it, but all I was saying is that it is definitely already widely available. It's cool that it's coming out, but I still don't understand why the news is as big as it is.

"but I still don't understand why the news is as big as it is."

1. The fact that not everyone owns the game. If that wasn't the case then the prices online for the ps2/dreamcast/xbox wouldn't cost as much as they do now.

2. Lack of arcades

3. Online Multiplayer.

That list doesn't really answer the question for me, though.

1. I understand that the game cost is fairly high, but so are the costs for other old games, but it's not like they received as much coverage when they hit the Wii Store. It's safe to say that the amount of people who own PS2/Xbox are more than the people who own Nintendo/Genesis, and it could end up costing roughly the same to pick up one of those old systems as well as an equally rare game (equal to MvC2). So bringing the price into things doesn't make much of a difference to me. My friend really loves Earthbound, and the price of buying it didn't deter him from finding it on Ebay and picking it up.

2. I can't find any exact numbers as far as numbers of arcades go, but it is a very valid point that the numbers of arcades are dwindling. I only have my experiences to go off of, but finding MvC2 machines hasn't been very difficult considering the popularity of it. Olympia is the capital of Washington state, but it's a very small town. I know of two MvC2 cabs within city limits, and another selection of arcade cabs in both the bowling alley as well as the local pizza place. I also know of MvC2 cabs in the University of Wa (easy to get in there, no need to be a student), Gameworks (Seattle), and in Tacoma (another bowling alley). Hell, I even know that the local Red Robin has arcade cabs! So to me, it seems like arcade cabs are all over, it's just a matter of looking for them and not just convincing yourself that they don't exist.

3. Online play is definitely something to be excited for. Hell, even I'm excited about it. I don't think the online play is a driving factor behind the game's popularity, though, which is made evident by the fact that the game is already extremely popular in arcades/past consoles, and those don't have online play. I don't know about you guys, but the MvC2 cabs at the local mall as well as at Gameworks are typically really popular on Friday nights. Sure, it's a more specific time rather than online matches at any time, but they're still not as dead as I hear some people saying they are.

Dude, you really have to check out Arcade UFO in Austin. I live in Austin as well and that place is awesome, check out their cabinet listing: http://www.arcadeufo.com/arcade.html

There were many arcades before that one, but they closed (Einsteins for example). Arcade UFO is the only one that I know about aside from the Main Event and other corporate chain businesses that usually have a very poor selection of games.

As for the day, PSN has been known to add extra-special releases, like the RE5 VS mode, on days other than Thursday. If memory serves me right, I believe that particular release also fell on a Monday...

@Roofie - if you want to find out where there are arcades with it, go to aurcade.com, a very well done tracking site for arcade games.
While I'm looking forward to the re-release on my birthday, (how apropo), I can always just walk into my den and play the arcade version.
