well DUH...

the reason I don't think there will be one at E3 is because business-wise it makes NO sense at all. There are an ASSLOAD of games coming out this holiday season...why not go with the 1-2 punch and Drop the Price mid-late October along with ALL the damn games coming out and REALLY role over the 360 saleswise??

"WTF" is definitely in the form of a question, so it warrants the question marks. I just can't think of a good answer to it. I guess, "Yes, the F" probably doesn't cut it.

dunno where all the zune talk came from but hell I loved my Zune30 up until it died on me last December 31st last year....sure it was replaced for free but that and the fact that I bought my wife a Zune16 and the backlight went out in under 3 months still hurt my faith in the Zune Brand...something tells me that I will still get a Zune250 if they release one

I don't think they have their costs quite in the right place yet. I do think they'll have it by the end of the year, but not by the end of the month, and obviously you don't want to announce it too early, and cannibalize sales (unless they announced a particularly compelling game to keep sales up in the immediate interim)

But then, if people are expecting a price cut, they are going to hold onto their money. The money is in the licensing, not the machines themselves...

Unless you're Nintendo of course.

I am NOT a Sony fanboy (I own all three systems), but I am so sick and tired of people whining about the PS3 price that I almost hope Sony DOESN'T announce a price cut at E3. If you think something's too expensive, don't buy it. Let the market dictate the price. It's that simple.

Exactly, that's why I haven't purchased a PS3 as of yet, I own both a Wii and an 360 (got the 360 arcade at 200.00 new 6 months before the price drop).

That's the fun of it, their sales are lagging, so the market dictates that they price cut.

Exactly. The market dictates that the price needs for it to be lower for the sales to meet expectations. Don't go quoting numbers on me here, I don't care how many units it sold - the PS3 has not met expectations. Whether or not it's done poorly is a completely different matter.

I think a lower price could actually have long-term benefit for Sony in that they might be able to sell the PS3 on the blu ray player at a $300 price point, get a greater install base for blu ray (though I don't think it will catch on like DVD within the system's lifetime at least, but there's still room for expansion), and gain some game market sales in the process. Unfortunately for them, just as "Playstation" came to replace "Nintendo" as the word for a game console in the common (non-gaming) vocabulary, that has now been replaced by "XBox". It's going to take a lot to get that back. (Wii is sort of a different category, as many non-gamers actually know what it is - not a diss on the system, just a fact of life)

a price drop around november would great for the ps3. i don't think it'll convert 360 players but i definitely think a cheaper console combined with a strong lineup of exclusives will sway undecided people in its favor

I mean, I'd rep both consoles if I could finally afford a PS3.
And November would be a great time for a price drop (for me :D).

Personally, I do not expect a Price drop this year at all. Why go deeper in the red when things are bad just to get market share. If you listen to the rhetoric from Sony, and if Sony believes their rhetoric, then it would be best for Sony to actually make a profit then go for market share. Sony has enough Strong First party devs to keep them going not to mention support from the majority of third party developers.

Dropping the price on the PS3 to gain more market share in this economy would be the wrong move and could backfire costing the company big.

That all depends. If the company is "ok" with the slight loss on PS3s right now and if production becomes cheaper (due to redesigns or chip cost coming down) then it would serve that Sony might be "ok" with lowering the price in an effort to gain more market share while keeping the same (or better) margins on the PS3 hardware.

So, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

@ Mr. Khan

"Lagging sales" is up for interpretation, and depends on a company's goals. As Nintendo has shown in recent generations, profitably is sometimes more important than market share.

I'm sure any Ferrari's sales lag behind that of a Honda Accord, too.

The profit margin on a Ferrari is probably 10 times that of an Accord. You can't really compare the two. Same thing with the Wii and the PS3. Nintendo makes money on every Wii they sell, while both Sony and Microsoft lose money on the sale of their hardware systems.

The only way for Sony and Microsoft to make their consoles profitable are to have gamers buy games for the system. Each license is around $12 or so to MS or Sony. The difference between selling 100,000 copies and 1,000,000 copies is huge. The larger the install base, the better chance they have of selling more games. The only way for Sony to dramatically increase their install base at this point is to lower the price. The longer they wait to drop the price, the more money they'll continue to lose. If they don't announce a price drop for the PS3 at E3, I think Sony will run the risk of having to close their games division within the next 3 years.

I could be wrong, but virtually every publisher and analyst out there has been saying that Sony needs a price drop to stay competitive. In this economy they can't afford to continue hemorrhaging money the way they are, and the only way they can even come close to being profitable again is to sell more consoles. Definitely not going to happen with everyone waiting and expecting a price drop. I've been waiting for a year to buy a PS3 because I'm waiting on the price drop. I would have easily bought 5+ PS3 games by now. No way I'm the only one.

@ John Perkins

"I've been waiting for a year to buy the PS3. I would have easily bought 5+ games by now.

Well, that's your loss. Especially when you could have been enjoying the damn thing for a year or more, and easily more than the five games you mentioned. Plus Blu-ray capability (I'm assuming here that you don't have a standalone Blu-ray player and that you do have an HDTV). This concept is not a new one. New technology is always more expensive than when it's a few years old, but the benefit is that you get to enjoy it longer. I paid $500 for my 60GB PS3 when I bought it in November 2007, and I wouldn't regret it for an instant even if Sony lowered the price of the PS3 to $300 tomorrow. We Joystiq readers know about hardware launches and prices six months to a year ahead of the fact. We have time to save money and there's no use bitching about it.

Probably a couple of factors. I'm sure the pathetic excuse for a d-pad on the 360 to go along with a nice back catalogue all factors into the decision.

Rob: Also, besides what was previously mentioned about BlazBlue, the limited edition PS3 version comes with a bonus Bluray instead of the 360's DVD. Not only is the bonus content in HD, but the overall blue-ness of the set is a nice effect, and I'm being only half sarcastic.

A PS3 will surely find a place in my house, only when a price cut happens. I'm not paying that much for the biggest console of the 3, especially in this economy.

I got my PS3 for $277 after tax. Traded in my old PS2 and a butt load of games. Gamestop has that deal where you get $100 off a PS3 for a PS2 and some games. Hearing people doubt a price cut makes me happier I didn't wait only to be disappointed.
