Activision isn't just milking the brand, they are killing the whole genre of games with WAY to many releases. Just release DLC and slow down the release cycle before you kill music games for good! I understand that, everybody else understands that, why doesn't Activision?

Because 1,000,000+ consumers still flock to Wally World on Sunday morning every time a new GH is released. Money talks, and it speaks the only language Activision understands.

Exactly. It's like asking a colony of bacteria why they aren't rationing.
They're not interested in building a strong genre or a lasting userbase, they're interested in dominating the market, flooding retailers, and getting in while the money's good, because their own analysts have likely concluded that rhythm games are a passing fad. The irony is it's a self-fulfilling prophecy - the genre will be a flash in the pan precisely because of their strategy. They won't be releasing GH games at this rate in five years time - they'll be milking some other crowd of rubes.

The only reason it works is because people continue to buy it. I decided after playing GH3 to not to be one of those people, and that's all anyone can do.

This makes it official, Guitar Hero World Tour....which was going to be their brand new direction and answer to Rock Band, was abandoned within 3 months of it's release.

I say 3 months because that was when about they started hyping GH:Metallica. And ever since then we had Smash Hits, Van Halen, and now these three.

I honestly give it about a month before we see the next Smash Hits announced.

So, none of these games would work as plain DLC?

You know? Sending "data" over an "internet tube" to be stored on a "hard drive" as an "add-on" for an existing game?

Seeing that the existing GHs and RBs are now as prolific as a whore at a port-side dock, you just can't add this shit to those games?

It would be awesome if this scenerio was played out. People spending real money now to be a fake hero can stop being fucked when their current investments are made moot.

As long as we can upload the GHWT and GH:M songs to our hard drives for use in GH5, then I don't see any problem. It's just more songs. If you don't want to buy it, then shut the hell up and don't buy it. It's very simple.

First of all, your wish won't come true.

Second of all, this company is ruining what has become one of my favorite genres of video game. It's more songs that could've easily been released as DLC without creating another title to flood the market and confuse the consumer. DLC allows the consumer to create their own list of music without having to buy things they don't want. By making new discs, Neversoft is FORCING consumers to spend extra money for things they don't want.

I can't believe they're doing this. There's an article in the most recent Game Informer about whether or not music games are on their way out.

If we treat them like how Harmonix treats them, as a way to enjoy music and introduce new sounds to the masses, we have a revolution on our hands and a renaissance for the music industry.

If we treat them like Activision, we ruin them. We turn them into a constant rehash. Always reusing and subtly tweaking something and calling it new. Ever notice how every product that Activision has released since they got the Guitar Hero series has tried to mimic Rock Band? Adding instruments, DLC, tap bar on the neck of the guitar, tightening HOPO window, guitar "solos" (the purple line) and now family friendly game? They're flooding the industry with games because they can't make a game right the first time.

Each game that came out with a "new feature" was changed almost completely the next time to meet what Rock Band did because it didn't work. Vocals in GH:WT were broken because Neversoft thought the new system would be challenging. It's gone in GH:M. Battles in GH3 were ridiculous. Unless you were a god, you couldn't beat the last boss on expert without getting extremely lucky. What happened to that system? It's gone. Every original idea they've brought has been scrapped.

It's sad that they can't just come up with their own ideas and execute on them properly. Even DJ Hero is a copy off of an existing game, as well as another upcoming one.

I can't even play GH:WT because it bores the crap outta me. Meanwhile, I have 400+ songs on Rock Band 2 because the game is done right.

the last boss on expert on GH3 is actually quite easy, if you use a trick to kill him in the first 30 seconds

but you wont ever get to the last boss because raining blood is impossible

@Slaziman: You also have to luck out and get a power drop that forces missed notes, such as broken wammy or a lucky string break. If you have up difficulty, double notes, or amp overload, the AI will just hit them all, or enough to survive. So, there's the early game strat, but also pure luck. Just illustrates again how stupid the boss fight mechanic really is.

Actually I'm kind of glad they've flooded the market. Now I can't make up my mind which one to buy, because, again, they're flooding the market, so I won't buy any of them. Now I won't be disappointed when I buy Guitar Hero: Oakridge Boys while meaning to buy Guitar Hero: Generic Piano Classics from the Baroque.

They're lame for cranking out game after game without doing much of anything to improve the engine or the experience, but they're not doing anything to hurt the genre. That's like saying that all the quake clones that followed it were ruining the FPS genre. There were people who actually said this, that the FPS genre would die out because of this, but we eventually got Half-Life and tons of other quality games that followed.

Music games are hot and it's easy for companies like Activision to pump out crap and sell lots of units, but the cream always rises to the top. Whether that cream will be Harmonix or if someone else will step in and be the one to push it to the next level remains to be seen Heck it could eventually end up being Activision themselves, but it doesn't appear that they're interested in doing that. Eventually someone will do something to take the genre to the next level. There's nothing Activision can do to kill the genre though. It's established and it's driven by the music. They may hurt their own brand but as long as there's still quality music coming out for these games, there will be plenty of people eager to buy it.

With that said, fuck a bunch of guitar hero, band hero or whatever it is they call it. What they're doing right now is no different than Doom, Doom2, Hexan, Hexan 2, etc, etc ,etc. Re-skins of the same game, over and over again. I refuse to continue to fund un-development, which is what that is.

alright, then can somebody please explain to me how having lots or releases of a title like this, where the idea is to play it with more and different songs, is a bad thing?

there are only so many variations you can make on Mario Party to make a regular purchase worthwhile. there are only so many innovations you can shove into a Tony Hawk game and still be taken seriously. but i'd much rather spend 40-50 bucks on a game with 70 tracks than $1.50 to $2.00 per track downloading them.

Do we even have to? Look at all of the comments above!

- Oversaturation confuses the casual consumer into buying what many consider the inferior product. Shows that the music genre doesn't need to be well made to sell
- You will never be able to play some songs without disc switching. As in, if I wanted to play a compilation of Pat Benatar, I could NEVER play Heartbreaker with Hit Me With Your Best Shot without changing games
- Guitar Hero brings almost virtually nothing original to the franchise (and those that it does is usually retracted or deemed inferior to Rock Band yet again)

And here's something a friend told me once: Even if there are good songs in Guitar Hero, you're still playing it on a piece of crap game. Since when did rainbow sprinkles on crap make it anything more than crap?

No, we actually don't need this many Heroes, and the milking of this IP has become sad, but I do have to say that DJ Hero will be the first "Hero" title that I buy for myself. I bought Guitar Hero World Tour for my girlfriend last Christmas, but DJ Hero hits home for me. I just hope they have old school hipihop, and not crap from today.

Even if you are a GH > RB fan for some absurd reason, just know this. Activision in NO way cares about you, the consumer.

In response to that, I enjoy good games. I enjoy well made games that are consumer-oriented. I enjoy things that WORK.

All of those things are not very GH oriented, bro. I know why I play games and buy systems, and thats for quality gaming. Maybe I have higher standards than yourself?
