Flashback now available on iPhone
iPhone users, today could very well be one of the most important days in your life, because Flashback is available right now in the App store. It's a port of the Amiga version of the game, done by platform newcomers Manomio LLC, and features the requisite touch-based controls and a redesigned menu system.
We'd like to say that this iPhone version of one of the greatest games ever made is a surefire hit, and you should download it immediately, but, frankly, we just don't know. It could be another Mega Man 2, which is an amazing game on just about every platform besides the iPhone.

Now THERE is a classic, I loved this game back in its day.
The controls aged like a turd though.
Ranelar @ May 7th 2009 1:26PM
Maybe it's because I got used to Zodttd's emulators pre-appstore, but the mega man controls worked perfectly fine for me, and I was able to play through the whole game.

Aw man, I had this for my...um...Apple 2 GS maybe (was it out for Genesis?) Loved that game. Not as much as Out of this World, though. Get on that devs!

There is a recent free remake of Another World (Out of this world) using OpenGL (or D3D I'm not 100% sure), google it.
Iwa @ May 7th 2009 8:30PM
It was released for the Genesis, I still own my copy. A enhanced version was also released for the Sega CD.

The thing about classics is at the time they were revolutionary. Other than nostalgia, don't get your hopes up for this game.
The BIG thing about Flashback and Out of this World (the stories were good) was the animation. That animation barely stands up to todays games so don't expect to want to play this game to the end.
Lets also keep in mind this has TOUCH controls... it was difficult enough with a D-pad.
Not putting the game down, just being realistic about it.

Yeah, I recall falling to my death a lot in this game, as fun as it was.
Sinbad @ May 7th 2009 2:01PM
oh My old Sega, this game was really something back then...
fil.vina @ May 7th 2009 2:10PM
why is this NOT on XBLA/PSN/VC?!?!!

OMG this game was so frigging hard! Loved it tho. I have very vivid memories of that shadow-beast thing chasing you in the beginning and having to catch the rope or something to get away. Classic.
Geist @ May 7th 2009 5:11PM
Yeah...that's the wrong game. You're thinking of "Out of this World".
Neuromancer @ May 7th 2009 2:21PM
This game is incredible, along with Out of This World. Wish I had an iPhone yet again.
Obie @ May 7th 2009 2:21PM
I loved this game back in the day, but I don't think it would control well on the iphone/touch.
Douche Bigalow @ May 7th 2009 2:44PM
The reality is that most games just don't work using only touch controls. And the ones that get clever and try to use part of the touch screen as a 'virtual gamepad' end up wasting a ton of screen space ... but hey if people buy it, good for them.
phinnvr6 @ May 7th 2009 2:58PM
I think I'll pass... Have yet to get a non-free app from the App store or Cydia on my iPhone. Never even heard of this game and I played a ton of SNES games back in the day (mainly FF series and Zelda)
Geist @ May 7th 2009 5:13PM
You never...what?! Goddamn it man, go get this game. It's got a fantastic blend of platforming and shooting in it, with some stellar controls and fluid animations.
There's nothing like dropping down a story in between two grunts, drawing your gun mid-drop, landing in a crouch, and before either one of them can draw their guns, taking one out, flipping around, and taking out the other. it's awesome, and that's just the first level.
ronald.raygun @ May 7th 2009 6:32PM
imagine the old side scrolling price of persia with an awesome story and sci-fi and shooting of lasers and throwing grenades and such
meatee @ May 7th 2009 4:03PM
Holy crap, my all-time favorite Genesis/Sega CD game! But, not sure how well it'd play with touch-screen controls
Diskoboy7 @ May 7th 2009 6:23PM
Figures...
I only have $2.49 still left on my iTunes account.
mushroomdog @ May 8th 2009 1:33AM
Flashback!
Great, another reason why I must have an iPhone.
funkyellowmonkey(ps3 id) @ May 8th 2009 9:21AM
Hehe funny thing is I'm playing the Sega CD version on PSP, on the last level now! It's awesome and the best version of the lot as the Sega CD version is the only version that has a music soundtrack playing throughout each level and spoken dialogue when conversing with characters - all other versions don't have this.
The controls are perfect, it has definitely stood the test of time, one of the best platformers of its time and then some.
I hope one they'd one day release a version/remake in HD like what they did to Prince of Persia Classic on XBLA/PSN. :)

This port of Flashback is illegal.
I'm still wondering how Apple has approved that.
Don't buy it !
retrofan @ May 12th 2009 3:17PM
The developer, manamio has already explained that they approached members of the original Delphine Software International team for a license agreement; however, they explained the rights were not claimed when the company went bankrupt. The port is using an open-source engine and the game content has been available for download for 10+ years.
