Renders of DJ Hero controller
65
The Twitter account @DJHero has posted what are allegedly the first images of the DJ Hero controller. We are currently following up with Activision to confirm the authenticity of the account and the images. In the meantime, feel free to give opinions on the design.
Update: Although we've yet to receive official word from Activision, a recent press release from Activision's UK PR firm included the images. Second pic after the break or in the gallery below.

I don't know, honestly. On the one hand, it looks okay enough-- simple, easy to use and understand. On the other hand, I'm an old IIDX hand (not a very good one, mind) and I suppose I was expecting something more along those lines.
This is mostly moot, though, since I'm extremely reluctant to deal with anything coming from Activision of late.

I guess the only thing worse than a DJ who thinks they're actually a musician, is a gamer who thinks they're a DJ who thinks they're actually a musician.

I think by "last night" you mean "approximately an hour prior to this post"

What about all the other people that play COD4 and Halo and GH. Wannabe Marines and wannabe guitar players right? Well who cares? Doesn't stop them from making more money.

That argument is actually invalid. If music is a collection of sounds assembled to make a melody, than it doesn't matter which method you use to execute it. If your definition of "real" music is all about originality then, yeah DJ's have to much more creative with their tools to make original sounds but that doesn't mean they can't be musicians.
ok rant over

I'm trying to figure out how it would work but i just can't understand? would you have to press the buttons while you scratch? what would the buttons be for? fading etc?

From the looks of it, I'd you say you either slide all of them, or just the middle (red) button, like a DJ would do, and the other two either slide or are just buttons to press (which makes less sense but who knows).

I have no idea how that thing will work. Why can't they just steal the BeatMania controller? That worked really well

What's with the three buttons on the turntable? As far as I know, it doesn't make a difference where you hold the record when you scratch, and where the hell is the cross fader?
TURNTABLES DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!

They did the guitar thing first too with Guitar Freaks, They had one with drums even, don't remember if it was actually called drum freaks or part of guitar freaks. Obviously the singing thing has been done 1000 times and ages ago (especially if you could plain ol' karaoke), dancing has been done, they did one with a keyboard, it's all been done.

this sucks! honestly, guitar hero was bad enough replacing strings with buttons but now they want to replace scratching with pressing buttons... this is saddening it was bad enough that guitar hero did so well

this controller idea is stupid. they could stick to a turntable and fader and it would be challenging enough for most people

Will we see the day when we can put a DJ in our Guitar Hero band?
Then we can be like Linkin Park!
I'm about to break!

If you get to add a DJ I want to add some trumpet and other horn instruments... and maybe even a piano and mooq so I could listen to modern rock, like Betty.

I'm trying to understand exactly what you could do with this. I guess you could correct the phase with just those buttons (flick / drag), but you can't scratch the way a DJ does. Scratching involves dragging the record and manipulating the main fader to cut the channel off and on to produce the chirps you hear.
Maybe this is just one piece of the puzzle? Or maybe there going for Disc Jockey Hero? Really how much fun would that be?

Wait, what's the difference between a DJ and Disc Jockey? Is it like the difference between an MC and the Master of Ceremonies?

I was figuring he meant Disc Jockey in the sense of a radio personality that just plays records as opposed to a guy who chops beats and scratches crazy samples. I probably should've gone Top 40 in my parody instead of old-school hip hop, but that DJ Kool song seems to fit with what they want to accomplish with this game.

Why is the game industry slowly moving to a one-controller-per-game future? It really makes me sick.
And yes, I'm sure it's not swine flu.

We get it commenters... Beat Mania was great an all, but it wasn't any more like real DJing than this is. You got a few piano keys and a scratching pad. Any game that claims to be a DJ simulator at least needs to have a cross fader. Even better would be hi, mid, and lo knobs for a nice smooth mix.
Unlike Guitar rhythm games, I think a DJ hero game could actually come very close to teaching people how to DJ if they did it right. If it just teaches them some beatmatching and gives them enough control over the mix, they'd be halfway there (the other half being music selection).
I'm hoping they're not focusing too much on scratching or turntablism. While it is cool and flashy, it would be much harder to capture in a game and would probably amount to "move the record back and forth to perform a scratch." If they could do it right I'd be impressed, but it seems doubtful.
