Konami kind of announces Contra ReBirth for WiiWare
We'd love to be excited about the newly announced WiiWare release, Contra ReBirth, but it's a little tough when considering how Konami revealed its existence. The game recently appeared with little (read: no) fanfare on a Konami product page. Heck, we're not even sure if the thing is all original or a remix of an old game!
It's like having your first-born child and letting your friends and family know by mentioning it under your breath as you drive past the hospital. What are you hiding, Konami? Is it ... a ginger?

Looking cool anyway

What's the chance of this heading outside of Japan? Because I know for sure Europe haven't seen its release. We're waiting.
*Where's Gradius at?
Where's the game, Konami?
Where's Gradius? That's all I want to know.
Where the fuck is Gradius!?! Konami! Konami! Look at me. Look at me!
Where the fuck is Gradius, huh?!

Aw, come on, man. I just started watching the show. Can't make references to things more than five minutes old?
meledeo @ May 8th 2009 12:37PM
I'm excited for you... you have such a good time ahead of you. Watching it the first time is an experience quite like none other.
BEST. SHOW. EVER.
manmanpotty @ May 8th 2009 1:32PM
The Wire is the best show ever (Six Feet Under comes close)
Sturat @ May 8th 2009 4:31PM
Actually, judging from the two screenshots I'm guessing it's being made by the American company Wayford, which means it may very well come out in America and Europe before Japan. Hopefully I'm wrong and it's being made internally at Konami in Japan, or at least it's outsourced to a good company like M2.

As much as I want to play this game, I think they should stop with the 16-bit style...
It was cool with the Mega Man 8-bit style... but after Gradius ReBirth, it's more than enough... at least they should use sprites at high resolution instead of 16-bit sprites... altought, to be honest, I can't tell from the pictures if the game is using high resolution sprites or 16-bit... I'm just assuming because the word ReBirth reminds me the Gradius ReBirth game.
cuteSAVAGE @ May 8th 2009 11:21AM
I don't know what screens you are looking at, but these look really clean, vibrant, and detailed. SNES certainly wasn't capable of this (even the Mega Man X games were really washed out). Reminds me more of GBA's Drill Dozer, NDS's Henry Hatsworth, or even some of the more crisp entries in the Metal Slug series (2, X, 3, 5).
Looks great IMHO. Keep these faux 16/24-bit gems coming.
Fernando Rocker @ May 8th 2009 11:26AM
Yeah, nevermind...
In fact, I just read that Wayforward is developing the game... they did Shantae, which is a game with some of the best 2-D animations ever.
Bowser Rogozhin: Princess Nyah DF; Abigail Williams Slayer @ May 8th 2009 11:37AM
"a game with some of the best 2-D animations ever"
Shantae isn't called The Lion King. Simba's run is the single greatest animation I've seen in a game. However, we can't forget Earthworm Jim.
Fernando Rocker @ May 8th 2009 11:41AM
Yeah, The Lion King is great...
If you like 2-D games, you should play Wario Land: Shake It!
It's very very good, the animations and draws are top notch... I like how the game introduces a new gameplay element in almost every stage, since the beggining to the end. And it's a great game for completionists...
Dreganfyre @ May 8th 2009 11:52AM
"you should play Wario Land: Shake It!"
This man speaks truth. Wonderful, wonderful game.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ May 8th 2009 12:15PM
Maybe Sega should try a new 16-bit Sonic. Genesis style, not GBA style.
cuteSAVAGE @ May 8th 2009 1:01PM
Considering Shantae was on Game Boy Color... It blows The Lion King out of the water. I'm still sad they never got to release Shantae for GBA, can't wait to see what becomes of the WiiWare version after seeing the gorgeous art for A Boy and His Blob!
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ May 8th 2009 1:49PM
WayForward is making Contra ReBirth, huh? I guess not too surprising, seeing as how they made Contra 4.
Rockin'.
Mr Khan @ May 8th 2009 2:33PM
I too would like to voice appreciation for Wario Land: Shake It!
Garu @ May 8th 2009 11:18AM
I'd love to see this on WiiWare, but I think this is a DS game... there is a photo of the box on the site.

I'd LOEV to see more SNES/16 bit style platform games show up on the Wii... only with somewhat better graphics. I think it's time for a new Super Mario Brothers game... a new Donkey Kong arcade game... a new Pac-Man game...
I'd love to play the Donkey Kong 2 arcade game I recently just read about.
Garu @ May 8th 2009 11:19AM
(LOEV = LOVE... darn typos!)
cuteSAVAGE @ May 8th 2009 11:22AM
That's the Japanese version of Contra 4.
uncle jesse @ May 8th 2009 11:20AM
Contra 3 was definitely one of the best 2-player games ever.
Hanging from a launched missle with one hand and firing your gun with the other... BADASS!

If Wayforward Technologies is developing Contra Rebirth and it's an original Contra game, then count me in!

GIMMIE
contra ds was hella good.
jONEz @ May 8th 2009 11:58AM
Don't remember those screenshots from the original NES or SNES games, a new game would be AWSOME! Or even a port of one of the handheld games!
