Brutal Legend as it once was, sans Jack Black

Brütal Legend developer Double Fine has been working on its heavy metal-based action game for some time now. And they've got the leftover art assets to prove it. Recently showcasing a grip of work from the past few years previously only seen during the "Brutal art of Brütal Legend" panel at GDC 2009, the screens (below in the gallery) hint at the variety of metal themed environments we're anxiously awaiting to fully explore come the game's October release date.

Possibly most interesting of all is the distinctly Lemmy-ized main character, pre-Jack Black days apparently. But really, would it have been so hard to see the Motörhead lead singer commanding the armies of rock in a revolution? Yeah, not so much.

I wasn't too hot on an action title, especially one that sounds to be so tediously button mash, coming from the trite gameplay of Psychonauts (which I did love, BTW), but I would have still been all over it because of Schafer. Throw Jack Black into the mix and I'm done.

I can't say I find Lemmy to be appropriate for the role. Lemmy as a roadie hoping to one day become a rock star? I don't see that. Jack Black in that role? It works much better.

I think Jack Black will be the only good thing about this game. Something deep inside me says this game is not going to be as great as everyone wants it to be. I hope I'm wrong.

yeah hyams, i have haha. Tmac and KSPRAYDAD (the guy that wrote the original TAWKN article) both told me over PSN. i really can't wait for it, and i hope it's not just them messing with us. that's actually probably my most anticipated ps3 release yet.

It looks both awesome AND awesomely funny. It's a combination that leaves me awed, some.

Jack Black is a very, very good thing to happen to this game.

This headline scared me. I thought it meant that Brutal Legend will still be as it once was, only sans Jack Black. They BETTER keep him in this role.

Jack Black was an afterthought.

The only reason I don't like the above shot is it's too, well, real. It would have been an affront to the unique Tim Schaefer art style.

It is interesting to consider how much more interested i would be in this if it was spelled Brootal Legend.

Whats with all the jack black hate? He's not amazing or anything, but i don't remember him doing anything particularly offensive, or being horribly overexposed or anything. Unlike a few other celebrities/comedians who clearly deserve to be hated.
