You might want to sit down for this (you look tired). Judging by an update to Electronic Arts' Pratik Patel's LinkedIn page, work on Dead Space 2 is already underway. The engineering guru updated the page to include his role on the still as-yet-unannounced sequel, on which he is serving as the game's technical/development director.
Hardly shocking, we know. Like a necromorph's limbs, any real doubt of Dead Space getting a sophomore outing was severed with EA's own Frank Gibeau and Glenn Schofield admitting as much just days after the original's release. Nothing else is yet known, though with E3 just around the corner and Dead Space Extraction dismembering Wii shelves later this year, we don't expect to be retiring our trusty plasma cutter any time soon.

God I love dead space. So much better than RE5.

you know I would of strongly disagreed with that a couple of months ago but I believe you right.
RE5 was the biggest let down.

Just because past games fail at it does not mean it can't be done. It may take a bit of creativity though. Such as your suggestion, putting players in scenarios that make them have to hurry to escape something like a space station crashing etc, all the while other players can be necromorphs trying to kill you.

@ Sin: I a huge co-op fan, but not all games work well with them. Especially if they replace a co-op player with NPC characters in single player mode.
RE5 was fine, but it was the least spooky of the bunch with Sheva always being there next to me. But hey, that's just me.

When i say co-op i basically mean stick a clone of the main character in there with you and you both kill stuff together. That person would no impact on story regardless and be nonexistent if you so choose to play alone. Just use your imagination a bit instead of trying to shoot down my ideas.

Coming from a diehard Resident Evil fan, I even have to agree that Dead Space was a deal better than Resident Evil 5.
However... I pray for the soul of anyone who dares to compare any horror game to Resident Evil 4.

Amen to that!
Both Silent Hill: Homecoming and Resident Evil 5 sucked and completely let me down, though RE5 not as much as the rather terrible SH: Homecoming.
Dead Space, on the other hand, came out of left field and became my favorite survival horror game of all time. EA really knocked it out of the park with that game.
SH and RE are dead to me now. My survival horror fandom lives for Dead Space.

I agree. SH: Homecoming was pretty bad. Any game that they are too lazy to even implement invert controls for you know is going to be a piece of crap.
I do have to admit though I would love to play a new fatal frame game. Esp if it was played from the first person perspective.

lol Internet tough guy. You're a joke, you call me kiddo, and say I want to play DS2 with my mom (BTW Happy mothers to any potential mothers on the interwebz lol) yet I'm the one talking normal without being offensive.
I was basically just asking for you to give constructive criticism instead of literally saying "your idea *really* sucks". However, I now understand that may be too difficult for your narrow mind.

"Just because past games fail at it does not mean it can't be done."
The hard part about this is that it spreads out company resources, but yeah, as long as they can afford the manpower, they shouldn't give up on incorporating a MP set-up.
My main hope for the second game is further development of the story as well as making the game less linear. It would be fun to incorporate more elements of stealth and randomness instead of necromorphs always knowing where you are and coming out only on exact trigger events (and you of course knowing exactly where they're coming from if you've already played the game once).

dead space does not need any sort of multiplayer it defeats the object of the game.
This is exactly why Bioshock 2 will fail. With highly polised visuals and the best audio in a game and on my 360 absolutly no bugs imo making it an outstanding single player game, why ruin a great game by adding multiplayer that to be fair people will hardly play. There is plenty of online stuff about to keep you occupied. Cant wait for the new one rumors about that it might be released q4 this year

Whoa, Dobson, you spilled your LinkedIn in my gaming news. I came up with 185 results for Pratik Patel when I logged in and searched for him, got a chuckle when I noticed on his profile that he did some game development on the 32x when he was with Wave Software.
Dobson, you're 3 degrees from me!
PS - I had to do some serious googling as I'd never heard of Wizardry 7 - http://www.korseby.net/spiele/wizardry/wizardry7_2.gif

I can't wait. One of my favorite games ever.
I really hope they find a way to add multiplayer. I'll forgive no coop (though it would be awesome if there was at least 2-player coop) but competitive is a must and is TOTALLY doable.
Weapon unlocks at levels or something...or maybe a purchasing system and then for leveling up, you get a node to insert into an upgrade slot, etc.
It could be awesome.

The weapon system is already perfect in my opinion, so i hope they don't change that. The only problem i had with the first Dead Space is that there could have been more different and varied enemies to deal with, and perhaps a more varied setting (as opposed to 90% metal corridors).
Since the necromorphs seem to twist the original creature they infect, i hope the game will be set into a different setting that includes more creatures they can "necromorphizise". How about if Isaac had to land on an intergalactic cruise ship that includes a Zoo. It would be interesting to see necromorph animals. Necromorph Giraffe would be seriously scary!

^ you've been playing too much RE: Outbreak File 2, lol.
I do agree with you on enemy assortment, and some slight tightening up of controls (there needs to be a on-the-fly statis refill button instead of having to go into inventory).

YES! Sequel PLEASE! Just don't let it be released this year..its too soon. And you know what guys, no I DO NOT want multiplayer! Zero! Not even Co-Op! The best part of Dead Space was being completely isolated. As much as I love Co-Op, there seems to be a much slimmer selection of truly great single player games these days. There is nothing like getting totally sucked into a fantastic and atmospheric single player game. I loved RE5, but the story was cut short to make way for a fast-paced co-op experience. I want survival horror from the only game that got it right this gen!

I'm not into horror games. Don't make fun of me, but I can't play scary games. The extent of my horror gameness is nazi zombies. But is it really worth it to play this game. Should I just drink a bunch of red bull or something and buy this game and play it, or is it super scary?

Dead Space was my first survival horror game (though I do watch horror flicks), and I didn't really find it any scarier than say, Half-Life 2. I can only recall two times I was actually startled, but there was definitely a feeling of tension the entire time, kind of like The Path. On a scare-scale of 1 (being Pokemon) and 10 (being the last Joystiq Podcast photoshop) I'd give it a 6 overall.

Once you get used to the fact the every body jumps at you, or will eventually, the game isn't that scary. It's still a bit creepy, but that's it.

Survival horror has become one of my favorite genres. On the other hand, I am unable to really sit through a horror movie (along the lines of The Ring and that ilk.) I find that while watching a movie, I have no control over what the character does and if I see the monster and they don't, there is nothing that can be done about it. In a videgame I have complete control of the character, making the situation easier to handle.
