Okay, okay, we're just kidding -- he doesn't talk about any mythical beasts. But he may as well be, when speaking about the oft rumored, never going to happen "PlayStation phone." Telling the Financial Times (requires subscription), "If we do not adapt to this new technology or new market environment, we're going to lose," Sony Ericsson's president, Hideki Komiyama, has seemingly resurrected the rumor from its smoldering ashes.
Though Sony allegedly has said in the past that a PlayStation-branded phone could only exist independently from the mobile phone maker, the statements made by Komiyama seem to paint a different picture. Though we'll call it unlikely at best, it is possible we'll hear more about this partnership at next month's E3 -- but we're not holding our breath.

Considering the rumors of PSP Go! flying around with a umdless psp the fact that games are up on the psn, this could possibly work if it does happen.

Give us a choice, like iTouch and iPhone
PSP go umdless & PSPhone
The PSPhone of course costing more, but it will be worth it if its anything as superb as my current Erricson :D

I'm not a fan of the concept art either... but mainly because there doesnt seem to be any analog sticks... we ask to add an addition one, but instead, they subtract the existing one.

I don't see the point of having a PSP Go and a PSP Phone at the same time...Apple can have both a Touch and an iPhone because people listen to music pretty much all the time; so if they don't want the iPhone, they just get the iPod touch and will use it just as much and not feel like they're missing out on anything.
People don't play portable games on the go as much as they listen to music, so the real necessity of a having both a PSP Go and PSP Phone doesn't make sense, because it would feel like you're getting a hamstrung PSP if you went for the PSP Go; and similarly people are not going to buy a (likely contract) PSP Phone just to play games if there was a PSP Go.
All theoretical of course, but to me having two devices like that on the market would not make sense.
One or the other Sony. Not both.

I think there are benefits to having a choice out of the two, not having the phone option will provide more features, such as more space for gaming, less battery down time, and various storage facilities.
The PSPhone however would offer the option of having a phone built into the PSP, with the same great gaming experience (and of course music, which sony specialises in anyway with the walkman brand, so its not an issue) but have less memory space then the standalone and maybe less powerful battery power. Either provide the buyer with options.
And while you have a point, people don't play gaming as much as listen to music, but mainly because we've never been given much of that opportunity, I either carry my Erricson for music and phone or carry my psp for music and gaming, most of the time I need the phone, so given one choice, it will of course be my phone, but if I had the choice to have it all in one, then yeah, I wouldn't need to carry one or the other. Saying that, I never bothered with iTouch because I didnt think it had anything that interested me, the same goes for iPhone, but if Sony released a PSP2 at a cheaper price, for those not interested in a phone, but it is UMDless, why not? And for people like me, who are interested, bump up the price for the phone (not horrendously but reasonably) and if it fits my needs, why not.
At the end of the day, give me a choice of playing mini games on iPhone or Socom Fireteam Bravo 3 on PSPhone, which one am I most likely to choose? Anyway, thats just my opinion :)

What about all the people that already have purchased a PSP or DS? They bought a device that solely plays games, and would continue to purchase such devices in the future. So there's the reason for a phoneless version.
There are many people who would be willing to pay more to have fewer devices, eliminating the need for both a phone and a PSP/DS. I can think of countless examples for this. Imagine if you're a parent whose kids want both, and you're going to buy both, why not buy one? Then they'd be less likely to leave their phone behind because they want to bring along the games.
Convergence is a big deal, and I don't think it's going to stop. I'd play more games on my iPhone if they were better, but currently I bring my PSP for serious gaming on the go. If those devices merged, I'd be a potential customer. Seeing as the video game industry is now the biggest entertainment industry in the US, there's no reason device-makers shouldn't attempt to get a piece of that pie.

Also, it's called market segmentation. Get people to pay as much as you can for something, extracting as much of the consumer surplus as possible.

I agree with you because I too would prefer better games on my phone, plus the added fact that PSN keeps growing and getting better means that day one release of a PSPhone would also bring an array of great games to choose from.
Still though, for those not interested in the phone capabilities, they are therefore hindered by the disadvantages that phone capabilities bring, that too brings limitations, limitations that the phoneless version could make up for. The alternative is for the PSP2 to release sort of like a blackberry or PDA, and only play games, giving users the option to upgrade to phone services as well or not.
Either way, there should be a degree of choice because the market for PSPhone is seperated, those who want it, and those who aren't interested, and those not interested are only not interested as they are worried it will somehow hinder thier usual psp experience, otherwise, people wouldn't mind, they could just decide to use the phone or not.

"...because people listen to music..."
Since it appears you did not know and are brand spanking new to the PSP, it plays music, has visualizers, internet radio, skype, DLNA, remote play, rss, internet browsing, movies, videos, photos, tivo to go, location free TV, etcetera, so on and so forth. Oh and it plays games. In fact it has a massive amount of critically acclaimed titles.

I disagree. Whilst the i(cell)phonepodtouch has a bunch of things like ifart and baby shaker, the five year old PSP has a colossal amount of critically acclaimed titles and a incredible feature set which in many ways trumps apples ippt. And don't forget, that if Sony chose to make a PlayStation Phone it would use newer hardware then the ippt currently does.

Sony isn't going to sink any money into the phone market. You are saying that PSP has a colossal amount of titles. Why does it need to be a phone again? People can have their phones and PSP's without Sony throwing tons of money out of the window.

Maybe, just maybe because Sony would like the piece of a pie that just so happens is about to take off, and considering Sony has a bad habit of entering markets too late...
XBL > PSN
Ipod > Walkman
DS touchscreen > Sony thinking of ways to trump it
Wii Motion > Sixxaxis
...it only makes sense that Sony jump into this market and make as much money from it as possible before Microsoft and Apple jump in first, it may seem pointless in theory, but see how everyone is happy they can now have internet and listen to music all on thier phone? Well, come a few years down the line and they will have DS and PSP type games on thier phone as well, right now phone games are crappy, fullstop, quick fun, but nothing deep or particualarly memorable. It just makes sense that Sony get into that market, they have the hardware, they have the experience, they have the production facilities, theres really no excuse.
And if Sony looses out because as you say 'its pointless' and Apple happens to make it big in this so called 'pointless' market, I'll remember your statement, as well as sigh at Sony for once again being the last to the party.

I have to admit that I would be interested if Sony did enter the cellphone market and had two versions of the rumored PSP Go! (a cellphone version and an UMD-less version). Considering that the inclusion of UMD-less games plus a homebrew market (if they go that route), it could be an iPhone killer.
But then it would have to offer features other than games. And probably drop the PlayStation name altogether, in order to widen the appeal.

The appstore is a smoke screen that attempts to obfuscate the fact that the iphonepodtouch does not have flash). Any phone that has flash will expose that.
This site lists widgets that work within the PSP browser (it actually has flash) http://www.psponme.com/list_psp.asp?cat=Tools

I don't know if anyone is going to look at this again, but let me clarify myself. I do believe that Sony can make a bomb-ass portable gaming system/phone, but due to what's going on with the contracts if the iPhone does make it to Verizon both parties will probably make a shit-ton of money. If AT & T can somehow hold on to the exclusivity of the iPod, Sony could easily work something out with Verizon. I'm also thinking that Apple has something huge for the iPhone planned if it comes out on the Verizon network.
I don't have an iPhone or a PSP, but if I was going to drop money on one or the other today (spending the same amount for each), I'd pick up a PSP. Hey, I like buttons, what can I say?

well, Ericsson wants out, so Sony must first buy their their share of Sony-Ericsson, once Sony owns the phone thing, the PSP phone will come, but I think if they don't release it fast, (this year or next year) it will be hard to compete with iphone and nintendo at the same time. And hopefully nintendo won't be making a gameboy/cellphone or that would seal the deal for Sony.

You don't need to be at home to play online, and Playstation Store without a PS3.
Now that you think of it, it would be better to scrap the PSP GO!, for PSPhone. I suppose the only problem is the fact that carriers like to charge 1 million $ for a phone with no plan, and most kids won't be able to get it.

A PS phone would need so much development that it would likely be close to obsolete one or two years after it launched. So its not a money maker for Sony. even the iphone has had to have 2 versions come out to keep up to date with phone technology.
add into that back compatibility problems of a gaming platform and you will see that Sony cannot commit to any technology that it does not at least party control. that's why blu-ray & UMD are in, and why it took Sony years to make their Walkmans .mp3 compatible.

The phone market and the video game market is totally different and distant from each other. Each audience is also different. A PSPphone doesn't make sense because only a minority would prefer a device with high-tech gaming capabilities coupled to a phone functionality.

This is pretty ridiculous. It's like adding a motor to a buggy, thereby making it horseless. It'll never work, and what are you going to do with all the left over horses? You've got horseshoe repairmen out of a job and dependence on a new resource other than God's own grass the way nature intended.
It reminds me of that fool that added perfectly good peanut butter to chocolate. Kids eat chocolate, some of them have allergic reactions to peanut butter. Did anyone think of that?!
Now you've got these fools (Garmin) and others adding navigation technology to cell phones when all it does is make the hybrid worse than dedicated gps gadgets for navigation and worsens the cell phone utility by decreasing its battery life. A cell-phone is a cell-phone (duh). You add feature creep and it's less of a cellphone by definition. I don't understand what's so hard to understand about that concept.
What a totally useless and ridiculous idea.
Next we'll have cell-phones that do stupid things like check blood-sugar levels or act as some sort of atm or payment device. lol at 'progress'.

Why does a cellphone just have to be a cellphone? The whole point of development is to make it easier for a person to do several things on the go. If a cellphone should strictly just be for calling, then gaming should strictly be left to arcades and not home consoles, word should be left for PCs and not PDAs, cars shouldn't bother having Sat navs because thats the purpose of the A-Z, toothbrushes shouldnt be electric, we should just brush harder with regular ones, showers shouldn't have been invented, we can stand in the rain or bathe in a river, your argument makes no sense.
I can understand you not liking the idea of a PSPhone but to say a phone should just be a phone is why you are the sort of person that will keep the world in a state that doesnt move forwards.
Development, development, development!

Dear Sony,
My name is Donald and I am an achitecture intern from Brooklyn. I would like you to consider some of my ideas and if you like, please contact me for more:
-The new PSP should be a hybrid of the Kindle, ipodtouch and the Wii remote. What do I mean?
-It should connect to PS store the same way the Kindle connects to Amazon for books.
-It should have an accelerometer and touch technology. The PSP should create a Wii like experience when synced to PS3 and compete with DS/ iPod when detached.
-It should have a Touch screen. So I can use it to type or as a mouse. Not to mention the gaming options when synced to the PS3 as a controller.
Let me simplify,
If I could use my iPhone as a controller for the ps3 creating a Wii remote style experience; we would be in business. Not to mention added features like an on screen keyboard and touch technology.
Two more things,
1) Throwback games like SSF2HD and Bionic commando re armed should be the typical types of games offered on the PSP. Play at home and on the Go!
2) Can I connect to facebook, aim, twitter through Home please? There is no way to interact with non gamers while on ps3... It's good marketing if you consider this one. Create a media wall (in Home) so I can share pictures videos and websites with home users. I want to be able to see a friend surfing the web (if I can see them bowl, then I can see them surf), seeing what he or she is doing on the particular webpage and also discuss it with them.
One more) Can we design our own something in Home using a Sketch up or LBP type software?... oh! and PS3 owners should get a discount on the 250 price tag of the new psp I JUST PROPOSED.
Thanks ,
Donald
