Unfortunately, it seems that the death of 3D Realms was the best way for us to get our hands on the largest collection of Duke Nukem Forever screens we've ever seen, and now, footage of the game in action. Found on ex-3D Realms employee Bryan Brewer's personal website (found after the break due to its NSFW-ness), we're treated to the ubiquitous pig cops (now with the ability to jump and climb, apparently) as well as a variety of Duke vulgarities you likely won't want your mother to hear.
If anything, the footage proves that a ton of different gameplay was actually finished and -- we're not gonna lie here -- looks pretty decent. We didn't spot any jetpack totin' reptilian enemies unfortunately, but we can only presume the folks at 3D Realms were waiting until the last possible minute to show off such nostalgia laden insanity. Wait, isn't right now the last possible minute?
who cares ? i think nobody cares about duke nukem 3d anymore... 3drealms had 13 years to finihsh the job, and they couldnt manage to do that, now pay the price and die. In my opinion this is a disrespect with the fans along all those years , GTA IV took 3 -4 years to make for gods sake.
As fun as it seems, and as developed as it may appear to be, I have to say... 13 years for that? Seriously? Looks like, in the right hands, everything shown could have been implemented and FINISHED in a few years of development.
Yeah 13 years is a bit long, but you do have to keep in mind they started over a bunch of times since the technology and the engines changed, things like that.
That said, whoever was in charge of this project really screwed up big time. I just hope someone picks this up at some point.
You probably won't find much of this around here but I completely agree with you, 3D Realms have had more than enough time to finish this game, and then some! I'd have killed the studio ages ago if it were down to me; so there'll be no sympathy from me... should have gotten their act together when they had the chance.
I recognize that they started over many times but I still consider that part of development time because it was time wasted on developing the game. They should have gotten their project plan straightened out to begin with. Anyone who starts something without a plan is doomed to failure. Just try starting a business without a business plan, you'll flop. They should have stayed the course to begin with to release DNF, and then use the profits on that project to develop Duke Nukem 5ever with the graphical engine they decided to develop.
Yeah, i would have hoped they would have taken to the idea of releasing other Duke's and telling people DNF is actually still in development as some other mystical magical title.
I'm actually starting to wonder where idTech 5 is now. When Carmack starts telling people that Rage won't be out in 09 and they are just onboarding programmers for DOOM4 and there are no other licensees for the tech at the moment, you are already talking a 2004 to 2007 dev window for the tech before demo and now 2007 to 2010 from the tech demo to the game releases. Meanwhile, CryTECH has been rockin the world, and UTE has ruled the industry.
wow, 11years and that's all they have come out with, something studios are pushing out every year although the game will be missed, this studio got what it deserved in the end in all fairness
I'm kind of with Rafael, not in the same scathing way though. And Mystile, I don't know if I'd say it was one the most anticipated 'releases', but moreso one of the longest running jokes in the industry which is why it had so much attention paid to it. The studio became an absolute joke, and I agree 100% that those people that got so worked up into being a drooling apologist for 3D Realms should feel disrespected. You've been duped and fed BS all along.
Plus, in my opinion the game doesn't even look that fantastic. Reminds me of a SR2 to GTAIV type comparison. Graphics are decent enough, but it's more of just amusing/enjoyable fanservice.
Well, wether or not the game was one of the most anticipated games is debateable (sp?). Your right though to put the word "release" between quotes, since it never did get released. My statement of initially saying that, though is based purely on the fact it's been talked about so much, and everyone goes apeshit when they release a couple of new screens from time to time. I know I want a new Duke 3D, I don't think I'm alone on that one. I don't know about the being disrespected part. Perhaps, but I'd like to hear the full story first before I jump to conclusions on that one.
Also, you're right, the graphics don't look anything amazing, but I don't really care too much. Duke 3D on the XBLA doesn't look to great either, but it still holds up incredibly well, gameplay wise.
I don't know why the guy got voted down. He's right. They had 13 years. That's what happens to developers who waste their time. They go bankrupt, and then out of business.
Duke Nukem isn't canceled. But it's publisher is dead, and with the explosion of news around Duke Nukem and this video someone will be there by tomorrow to pick up publishing and push this hot piece of eye sex out the door.
God my goose bumps had goose bumps on them and they were kicking eachothers ass watching this video. I can't fucking wait. The first FPS in over a decade with real boss battles it seems.
Wrong Enzo, very wrong. 3DRealms is a publisher and also legally named Apogee Software. BUT Apogee is also a separate developer team/house under 3DRealms and is completely unaffected by the current situation regarding 3DRealms. Don't correct me on my Duke Nukem knowledge kid. Apogee is going to make an official press release next week about the development of Duke Nukem Forever, who is going to be taking over the publishing rights and how assets and licenses will be distributed and/or sold. Duke Nukem still has its developers, its license holder and publisher is gone though.
To summarize: Duke Nukem Forever and Apogee (the group of coders and designers who are physically making the game) are safe. We don't have to worry about some other developer screwing up finishing the game or that it is canceled.
I repeat, Duke Nukem Forever is not canceled. All issues regarding the legal and financial side of the game will be publicly addressed next week according to Terry Nagy.
To further drive the point into your air filled skull here is a quote directly from Terry Nagy's mouth, "Apogee Software is officially not affected by the situation at 3DRealms. Development of the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned." Legally though as of NOW Apogee can't speak about the future of the game because obviously all the nasty paperwork and legal issues have to be worked out. But there WILL be an official announcement next week.
The more you know... and knowledge is power!
In the spirit of Duke Nukem, "Eat shit and die! Damn I'm good..."
Honestly the massive public outcry from game journalists and gamers on the internet might be the most retarded display of ignorance in the gaming industry since.... since..... well since gamers thought Steve Jobs invented video games and pong when it was in fact developed in the 60s-70s by Ralph Baer and was originally conceived by him while working in the military and classified for a period of time before it was dropped.
Though this hilarious farewell what could have been cryfest over Duke Nukem Forever is no doubt going to be incredible for the development of the game and push it out through the door. I suppose any publicity is good publicity.
nope sorry anticrawl. 3D realms was developing Duke Nukem Forever, while Apogee was working on Duke Nukem ***Trilogy***. Two different games. While the game might not be defunct, the developers have all been laid off. So unless you think Apogee can somehow gather the capital needed to rehire the 3D Realms employees, you won't be seeing this interpretation of the game anymore. These photos and videos were leaked from employees who were laid off. Apogee did not have any cuts, 3D realms did. Apogee would NEVER allow such a huge leak if they still were developing such a big game.
So there you have it, this game is now officially dead.
3DR wasn't the publisher, Take Two was. 3DR was the dev. And 3DR is dead. Duke probably didn't die with it, though.
If stories are believed, Take Two offered 30 mil for the IP. 3DR would have been around for years on that. 3DR declined and instead died. Why? Why hold on to the Duke IP if no games are coming? The IP isn't even worth much now. No way does the Duke Trilogy make 30 mil + whatever DNF would have made.
If George isn't giving up Duke then he has plans. Unless he's a complete idiot, those plans involve DNF. However, with all the dev team laid off, what's up? It's definitely costlier to hire new people to finish it. Either he's outsourcing/contracting the final builds, which he was supposedly close to, or he's pushing it onto another dev, possibly the Duke Trilogy team.
Of course, both these options take time, as new people must learn the existing code. Both will result in crappier products. And both likely kill any chance of decent post-release support.
George, what are you up to? Why didn't you just sell? Isn't it better to see Duke alive in someone else' hands than dead since 1996?
It would be such a shame if this doesn't either get released by someone else or at least have what was made released to the public. Would kill the meme, of course, but still worth it. Some things need to be let go of eventually...
The Death of 3d Realms could have been the best thing to happen to Duke Nukem Forever. We are getting tons of screens and videos. Someone will pick this up and rehire the talent under a new flagship, then probably force them to finish it in a reasonable timeframe. (as well as probably allow this to come to consoles because last I checked this was still a PC exclusive)
HOLY SHIT! That looked fun! Never played a duke nukem game before, but this made want to play it soo badly. WHY!? WhY!? Why did this game have to be gone forever?!
Posting a few things from that list. Things that took less time than Duke Nukem:
- The theory of General Relativity. - The Beatles formed, released every single one of their albums and broke up. - World War II and the entire Manhattan Project
Duke Nukem Forever isn't gone and isn't canceled. Where the fuck are you morons getting this information? Development is continuing as planned and Apogee Software is officially unaffected by the status of 3DRealms. We will be getting an official press release regarding the state of the game next week.
Gone or not, when humanity can design, build, launch and execute an exploration of Mars with robotic cars in the time it takes to develop a freaking video game, it's about time to hang up the game for good.
Good god anticrawl, did you not get told enough by your post above. Duke Nukem Trilogy is being developed by Apogee and published by 3D Realms. Duke Nukem Forever WAS being developed by 3D Realms and published by Take Two, but with 3D realms in the toilet, so is the game potentially:
This game is getting released. Somehow, someone is going to finish it - it's too famous at this point to just let go. It may be a rush job, it may wind up as a cheap cash-in, but it will come out.
I am now pumped. Really pumped. It felt so good so Duke in action again, and even beyond nostalgia, it looked like fun. Huge Boss Battles in a stadium! climbing on the back of that monster to give it a slap? That's awesome! All this tongue-in-cheek uber-manly gameplay is so much fun. I'm so glad it isn't super serious and they had some fun making it, I could think of some other games that don't have much of a laugh in them that have a similar premise. Too bad, too damn bad it never got released. I would play the shit out of that game.
DNF wasn't getting better day by day, or week by week, month by month or even year by year. Yeah, a quality game takes time to make, but time will only help to a certain point. In my experience, the biggest, most ambitious, super-high-quality games in the world... take about four years to make. At the most. Even another few centuries of gestation wouldn't make a game any better.
If the developers of DNF stopped time outside their offices, spent ten-thousand years on the game, finished it, resumed time and then sold it -- sheer volume of content aside -- it wouldn't be any more fun to play than it is now. And that goes for every game from every developer. Take the time needed to get it right, but take any MORE time, and it'll just go to waste. And in Duke's case, more time caused them to start over from scratch with more modern technology again and again and again and again, in a doomed cycle of infinite delays. Such a waste.
