As promised, today's episode of Pokémon Sunday brought the now not-so-surprising reveal of Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. While the actual revelation wasn't particularly mind-blowing, the episode did feature a few seconds of gameplay (posted after the break) that will likely whet the appetites of many a pocket-sized monster fanatic.
The gameplay itself isn't that interesting -- the protagonist merely walks in circles a few times -- though we do get a good sense of the Pearl and Diamond-esque art style the remakes will adopt. Also, if this clip is any indication, it looks like your starter pokémon will follow your character around in a Pokémon Yellow-esque fashion. We feel so sorry for Pokémon detractors. If you guys had hearts, that news would make them feel pretty warm.

If you're talking about the Pokemon that's following the hero, that's Gulpin, not Sentret

There's a totally different interpretation to that. I'm not going there.

I think it will be here by holiday '09. They said the release date for Japan is "Autumn". ~3 months is usually the difference between JP and US.

@Quattro
The localization was done years ago. The Engine is from Diamond/Pearl, so all they need to do is make the sprites for it.

Walking in circles, a very important part of any Pokemon game. Waiting for an egg to hatch, getting a Pokemon to like you more, leveling a Pokemon up in the daycare... walking in circles is an important part in accomplishing all of these tasks, and this clip shows us that this process has changed very little!

Oh I have, I'm just taking advantage of the mind-bendingly stupid footage they chose to reveal.

All I have to say is, Geez, another one? It would be nice if they took the series in a more interesting direction rather than continue with the same formula. I would be very interested in something that used a battle system along the lines of the Tales of Phantasia system, which is a sort of blend between turn-based and real-time combat. Haven't really played a Pokemon game since Silver though, so dunno. I guess I did play part of one of the GBA ones but I don't remember if I ever finished it. But playing it on an emulator at least makes the walking more bearable.

Definitely way better... the 3D elements blends fine with the 2D elements...

My only gripe is that I just KNOW that they're not going to be able to transfer over the "feel" of the older games. The color palette especially; the original use a lot of "woodsy" browns, greens, and yellows (ESPECIALLY yellows), and I'm already seeing that gone, sort of. Too much of a cool, blue-y tint. I'm really glad to see it in 3D, though. Hopefully they'll change up some of the puzzles and stuff too. :D

To be honest, I'd rather have them create some high-quality detailed sprites. Chrono Trigger-esque Pokemon game? Do want. D/Pe/Pl fake 3D/2D? Meh....

Yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean, but what it really is is just nostalgia. To the newer generation growing up right now and a few years before, this is THEIR feel of the Pokemon games.

Glad they brought back the starter following you. I think the whole dog thing worked really well in Fable 2, but it worked equally well in Pokemon Yellow with the Pikachu.. it gives you someone to feel attached to, rather than simply using Pokemon as tools, which is something the games have always discouraged.

I heard speculation that the only reason Chikorita is following you is that Prof. Elm lent it to you. In the original, Professor Elm had to you deliver a package (the Mystery/Togepi egg) to Mr. Pokémon, and lends you a Pokémon for you get to get there safely. On the way back, you run into the douchebag and battle. Once you finally return to Elm's lab, you finally get to nickname the starter (as well as your rival). It might be that at that point in the game the starter stops following you. I played the beginning of Crystal recently so I think that's right.
10 years later and I finally noticed how stupid the name "Mr. Pokémon" is.

I know this will sound really nitpicky, and yes, I realize we've only seen New Bark Town, but part of the reason Gold and Silver are my favorites in the series is really the coloring of the game compared to all the others. It was probably more the end result of GameBoy limitations, but the game really felt like fall with all of its dark reds and greens, whereas this just looks like every other game in the series.
Eh, maybe it'll look better in the late evening colors.

Yea, I loved the color palette in Gold and Silver too. One of my favorite touches was the bright yellow glowing windows in buildings while everything else is tinted blue when you play at night.
Also, I know that this is really just Nintendo repackaging the same Pokemon game AGAIN but this hits all the right nostalgia nodes in my brain the same way FireRed and LeafGreen did a few years ago. I can't wait to have my Totodile loyally follow me around.

I agree, but even so, just seeing the rival staring into the window brought back enough memories to fly to japan and start camping out now.
