First footage of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver revealed
As promised, today's episode of Pokémon Sunday brought the now not-so-surprising reveal of Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. While the actual revelation wasn't particularly mind-blowing, the episode did feature a few seconds of gameplay (posted after the break) that will likely whet the appetites of many a pocket-sized monster fanatic.
The gameplay itself isn't that interesting -- the protagonist merely walks in circles a few times -- though we do get a good sense of the Pearl and Diamond-esque art style the remakes will adopt. Also, if this clip is any indication, it looks like your starter pokémon will follow your character around in a Pokémon Yellow-esque fashion. We feel so sorry for Pokémon detractors. If you guys had hearts, that news would make them feel pretty warm.

OH GAWD OH GAWD!
I think I need a new pair of pants...
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 10th 2009 4:42PM

Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 10th 2009 4:58PM
I told myself to wear my stain proof pants BUT NOOOOO, I had to be all fancy and wear my solid gold parachute pants...
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 10th 2009 4:59PM
i know right? i gotta remember to change into sweat pants and have a box of tissues whenever i get on joystiq. this problem is truly embarassing.
Markez @ May 10th 2009 8:16PM
I'd like to condemn this comment thread to Joystiq purgatory, as it just seems as if these two are messing each others pants, which is needless to say, odd, disturbing, and unpleasant.
Ahmedz @ May 10th 2009 4:09PM
can we say......2010?
giantenemycrab @ May 10th 2009 4:48PM
I think it will be here by holiday '09. They said the release date for Japan is "Autumn". ~3 months is usually the difference between JP and US.
Quattro @ May 10th 2009 4:53PM
@giantenemycrab
I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from, but Pokemon platinum came out in Japan in September 2008, and in North America in March 2009. That's 6 months so I think 2010 for gold and silver is a likely date.
deanb @ May 10th 2009 6:09PM
@Quattro
The localization was done years ago. The Engine is from Diamond/Pearl, so all they need to do is make the sprites for it.
Monkeydog @ May 10th 2009 6:19PM
Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green came out in Japan in January.
It came out in America in September.
There's usually a 6~7 month wait for Pokemon here.
twilightlynk.com @ May 10th 2009 4:10PM
OMG! LOOK AT THAT AWESOME WALKING ANIMATION!!
At least that's the impression I got from the commentary in the vid XD
time @ May 10th 2009 4:11PM
Walking in circles, a very important part of any Pokemon game. Waiting for an egg to hatch, getting a Pokemon to like you more, leveling a Pokemon up in the daycare... walking in circles is an important part in accomplishing all of these tasks, and this clip shows us that this process has changed very little!
S. Tiger @ May 10th 2009 4:52PM
Someone hasn't gone to Solaceon Town in Sinnoh and just gunned it up and down from route 209 through Solaceon to route 210 and back.
time @ May 10th 2009 4:56PM
Oh I have, I'm just taking advantage of the mind-bendingly stupid footage they chose to reveal.
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 10th 2009 5:00PM
you still WALK in circles? Everyone whos anyone knows running in circles is the new hawttness
LxgShaka @ May 10th 2009 5:27PM
I actually did all those things by walking extremely long straight distances, but heh.. each with it's own methods :)
ice~ @ May 10th 2009 6:02PM
actually in pokemon...you can't make a circle considering the dimensions you walk in...so it's more like walking in squares...
iofthestorm @ May 10th 2009 10:03PM
All I have to say is, Geez, another one? It would be nice if they took the series in a more interesting direction rather than continue with the same formula. I would be very interested in something that used a battle system along the lines of the Tales of Phantasia system, which is a sort of blend between turn-based and real-time combat. Haven't really played a Pokemon game since Silver though, so dunno. I guess I did play part of one of the GBA ones but I don't remember if I ever finished it. But playing it on an emulator at least makes the walking more bearable.
S. Tiger @ May 11th 2009 12:18AM
Oh, yeah. It sucks 'cause I see a difference in Elm's lab, and they could have like...done more than go in a circle. Damn teaser trailer.
Fernando Rocker @ May 10th 2009 4:12PM
Definitely way better... the 3D elements blends fine with the 2D elements...
Here are some pics to compare:

My only gripe is that I just KNOW that they're not going to be able to transfer over the "feel" of the older games. The color palette especially; the original use a lot of "woodsy" browns, greens, and yellows (ESPECIALLY yellows), and I'm already seeing that gone, sort of. Too much of a cool, blue-y tint. I'm really glad to see it in 3D, though. Hopefully they'll change up some of the puzzles and stuff too. :D
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ May 10th 2009 5:32PM
To be honest, I'd rather have them create some high-quality detailed sprites. Chrono Trigger-esque Pokemon game? Do want. D/Pe/Pl fake 3D/2D? Meh....
Dowse @ May 10th 2009 6:12PM
??? looks far less gay in the original version.
Dave @ May 10th 2009 11:27PM
@ rowd149
Yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean, but what it really is is just nostalgia. To the newer generation growing up right now and a few years before, this is THEIR feel of the Pokemon games.
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 10th 2009 4:13PM
Also, its only Yellow-esque if I can look at them to see what there emotion is.
Backslash @ May 10th 2009 5:11PM
And if I can make 'em put a bucket on their heads by fishin'.
Snowblind @ May 10th 2009 4:15PM
Glad they brought back the starter following you. I think the whole dog thing worked really well in Fable 2, but it worked equally well in Pokemon Yellow with the Pikachu.. it gives you someone to feel attached to, rather than simply using Pokemon as tools, which is something the games have always discouraged.
Josh @ May 10th 2009 6:06PM
It's something the anime discouraged.
The games want you to use them as tools.
Mr Khan @ May 10th 2009 8:17PM
Nawh, they kinda discouraged it from Gold and Silver onward, also, since they introduced the idea of "happiness evolution"
rTwelve @ May 11th 2009 12:08AM
I heard speculation that the only reason Chikorita is following you is that Prof. Elm lent it to you. In the original, Professor Elm had to you deliver a package (the Mystery/Togepi egg) to Mr. Pokémon, and lends you a Pokémon for you get to get there safely. On the way back, you run into the douchebag and battle. Once you finally return to Elm's lab, you finally get to nickname the starter (as well as your rival). It might be that at that point in the game the starter stops following you. I played the beginning of Crystal recently so I think that's right.
10 years later and I finally noticed how stupid the name "Mr. Pokémon" is.
Clinton @ May 11th 2009 7:00AM
yeah i didnt notice how retarded the name was until now ether
Dopple Boppler @ May 10th 2009 4:18PM
I know this will sound really nitpicky, and yes, I realize we've only seen New Bark Town, but part of the reason Gold and Silver are my favorites in the series is really the coloring of the game compared to all the others. It was probably more the end result of GameBoy limitations, but the game really felt like fall with all of its dark reds and greens, whereas this just looks like every other game in the series.
Eh, maybe it'll look better in the late evening colors.
DrRocktopus @ May 10th 2009 4:40PM
Yea, I loved the color palette in Gold and Silver too. One of my favorite touches was the bright yellow glowing windows in buildings while everything else is tinted blue when you play at night.
Also, I know that this is really just Nintendo repackaging the same Pokemon game AGAIN but this hits all the right nostalgia nodes in my brain the same way FireRed and LeafGreen did a few years ago. I can't wait to have my Totodile loyally follow me around.
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 10th 2009 5:01PM
would the evolved form follow you around too or would it show up as it's base? because having a typhlosion following you would be SICK!
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 10th 2009 5:11PM
fuck Typhlosion. Feraligatr is where its at!
