You likely remember (maybe with just a tinge of embarrassment) our giddy delight at the release of adventure/platforming classic Flashback on the iPhone. But a report from Pocket Gamer indicates you might want to hesitate before you plunk down the $5 asking price.
For one, it seems you're actually paying for an emulator that downloads a ROM independently (kind of a shady workaround of App Store policies against otherwise copyrighted material). Since this version of Flashback apparently isn't designed for the phone there are also complaints of wonky controls. Speaking of which, can anybody tell us how to pick up the holocube? ... Anybody?

Hit the fire button. Intuitive eh? It's also used for running, and fire+up makes you do a standing jump. That took me like an hour to find out.

They're using the same controls from the classic game. That is, the button that makes you fire, also makes you pick up items, run, use lifts, etc. Absolutely not intuitive.
Also, with your gun away, pressing Fire allows you to speak to characters later in the game, and Item advances the conversation.
I love this game, but I'm not entirely sure that there's any way for an emulator to change the labels on the buttons based on in-game actions. Hopefully I'm wrong and it'll come later in an update?
I'd have been pleased if the buttons were simply labeled "A, B, C, and D". It actually would've made more sense, since they're context sensitive.

Hehe funny thing is I've been playing the Sega CD version on PSP, on the
last level now! It's awesome and the best version of the lot as the
Sega CD version is the only version that has a music soundtrack
playing throughout each level and spoken dialogue when conversing
with characters - all other versions don't have this.
The controls are perfect, it has definitely stood the test of time,
one of the best platformers of its time and then some.
I hope one they'd one day release a version/remake in HD like what
they did to Prince of Persia Classic on XBLA/PSN. :)

Have you gotten the Sega CD Lunar games to work on the PSP? I keep getting audio sync issues with the video sequences. It's off by about 2 seconds.

We're working on a 1.1 update to address the controls. See flashback.manomio.com for a post about the proposed changes.
To address the download: There's nothing shady and we're not trying to hide anything. We did contact past members of Delphine Software to obtain distribution rights and they explained that the rights were lost when the company went bankrupt in 2002 and were therefore had no commercial interest.
An upside of the single download is when we post our update, our fans will only have to download 1.1MB rather than 4.0MB. Perhaps this is not such a bad strategy for future titles?
Manomio has secured the rights for other retro titles that will be coming in the not-to-distant future, so stay tuned.

Yeah i saw this explained on touchArcade too.
Joystiq might have wanted to do more than two minutes research before posting up a "story" badmouthing the devs.

Stuart,
I'm sure you can read all of our minds when we say 2/3 things.
1. Oh my god we live you.
2/3. Our hearts beat for 'out of this world' (and subsequent sequels)
Now if only you can use your amazing mojo to break the soulless hearts at lucasarts and bring to us the wonder that is day of the tentacle, we will erect statues in your honor that will last an eternity (well, untill the earth is raised by our tentacle masters)
