Nintendo files US trademarks for Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver [update]
Update: We here at Joystiq are not perfect, and sometimes we're fooled. Sad to say, this has been one of those times, as some of the details you see around the net regarding Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are false. Our good friend Serebii pointed this out to us, and we have removed the false information from this post. We apologize for the error, and are baking you a fresh batch of cookies right now to make up for it.
When Nintendo announced Pokémon Gold Heart and Soul Silver remakes, it was only a few days after that we caught a glimpse of some gameplay. Of course, the gameplay video didn't reveal anything on the game other than the ability to walk around, but we know trainers are still getting pumped for the remakes. Well, if you live in North America, prepare to be pumped out of your mind.
Nintendo is planning to bring both Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver your way, as some US trademarks Nintendo filed (courtesy of Siliconera) show. Sure, you probably had little doubt in your mind, considering how much Nintendo loves money, but we just thought you would like to know. Both Pokemon Heart Gold and Pokemon Soul Silver are listed, so turn your cap backwards and get ready to catch 'em all ... at an unconfirmed later date.

What's a deet?
gamepete64 @ May 12th 2009 3:51PM
Means details.
I hope we get running shoes instead of skateboards in G/S.
Rosssas @ May 12th 2009 4:08PM
In which pokemon game were there skateboards? That sounds Awesome-Wells !!
David Hinkle @ May 12th 2009 5:21PM
Deets is how we can shorten "details" for headlines. It's also how we "stay hip with the youth."
So, you kids wanna listen to some Dan Fogelberg and play with these new hula hoop things with me?
Dragod @ May 12th 2009 3:51PM
I assume the Sept 11 release date is for Japan?
Anyway, I'm very excited for these... What is Nintendo going to do when it can't make remakes anymore? I think remaking the GBA games would be a bit too much... Well, at least we can finally play through Gold and Silver again; it's really annoying to open your menu to surf/cut/bike/etc, which is why I hate going back to the older games.
Also, first sentence is "Gold Heart" instead of "Heart Gold"
KaBob799 @ May 12th 2009 3:55PM
Completely 3d remakes ^_^
B3astofthe3ast @ May 12th 2009 4:54PM
In Gold and Silver, you didn't need to go into the menu for any of those things...
Dragod @ May 12th 2009 5:09PM
I could have sworn you did in G/S... I thought Crystal was the first to do it? I obviously don't remember. I lost my G/S/R/B and now all I have is Crystal and Yellow from the first 2 generations :(
Mr Khan @ May 12th 2009 3:53PM
9/11?
Nintendo promotes terrorism confirmed?
I hope they retcon the rival for these games, though. The whole "he's a crook who stole his first pokemon and mistreats them" thing seemed a bit too heavy-handed, especially since you got enough of that from Team Rocket
Gary was the ideal rival. He was an asshole, but not a criminal
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 12th 2009 4:13PM
I'm sick and tired of friendly friend rivals in Pokemon games, though. Like Silver or not, when you beat him, it felt fuckin' cool, all like 'yeeeeeeah'
When you beat Barry or May, it's totally like 'meh'
know what I'm saying?
Yeah, it was a bit heavy handed, but it was also pretty cool how you just hand Silver his ass over and over again until he realizes that using his Pokemon like tools ain't gonna get him anywhere.
Cesaria @ May 12th 2009 4:35PM
If by terrorism, you mean terrorism on my social life, then you are correct sir!
Vetle Lønning Bjørnestad @ May 12th 2009 4:40PM
The rest of the world I'm afraid, doesn't think that doing ANYTHING AT ALL on 9/11 is terrorism.
TheOverlord#2 @ May 12th 2009 4:42PM
Well, I agree with you about May being a "meh" rival, but Barry is awesome and second to Gary as my favorite rival.
I mean, check out Platinum...the Barry Dance is Amazing.
(plus, speaking of Team Rocket, ??? is supposedly Giovanni's son so...he obviously learned the whole "stealing pokemon > catching pokemon" from Team Rocket)
Jeremy White @ May 12th 2009 4:42PM
Hey yeah bro he was probably joking.
Uncontrol @ May 12th 2009 6:57PM
Silver was actually my favourite rival of the entire series. You felt really driven to defeat him not simply because he was your rival, but the moral antithesis to your character. Plus, he looked sweet.
This game is going to break my promise to never buy any more Pokemon games. Sigh.
ColorblindMonk @ May 12th 2009 3:55PM
I question the significance of Platinum. Just 4 months it comes out in Japan, and 5 months later and we'll have just another Pokemon game. Another Pokemon game where you'll have to start from the beginning, to catch them all. Again.
B3astofthe3ast @ May 12th 2009 4:18PM
In Platinums defense. it is insanely awesome.
Quattro @ May 12th 2009 4:54PM
What's wrong with fun games being released often?
Kaemon @ May 12th 2009 5:01PM
Uhh, Platinum came out back in 2008. Not this year.
ColorblindMonk @ May 12th 2009 5:42PM
They are fun, I'm just getting tired of the formula, which hasn't changed since the first Pokemon. I didn't like Platinum that much, being it's Diamond/Pearl with a different story. I worked hard to make my Pokemon dream team, but after making several attempts at catching 'em all, I've given up.
Platinum came out in Japan 2008 yes, but I was referring to the US version from March.
StoneAgeHero @ May 13th 2009 3:19AM
Whats the problem with platinum being the same as d/p? All Pokemon generations had 2 games, and then a third one that just had some added graphics and enhancements. Just look at r/s and then emerald or g/s and then Crystal.....
I can't wait to start catching them all! Again... =)
Snowblind @ May 12th 2009 3:55PM
Good to see that the starter continues to follow you.. But I'm disappointed that you still need to attend these movie events to unlock certain content, especially when a lot of countries don't even bother with the events.
What's wrong with just doing them over wi-fi like the Rotom key?
No special coloured Pichu = no Celebi.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ May 13th 2009 2:32AM
Usually, it's only the movie events for Japan. In America, just about everything's done through events and Toys 'R' Us.
Again, why they don't just do it over wi-fi, I don't know.
KaBob799 @ May 12th 2009 3:56PM
Doesn't look like thats changed, they showed him hiding next to the lab already.
Rhamsey @ May 12th 2009 4:01PM
i feel like a pokemon game was just released, but ill probably end up getting this anyway, as silver kicks ass.
Sam @ May 12th 2009 4:11PM
I hope it will still run on the DS, the DSi is still a waste of money in my opinion. maybe they'll have extra features for the DSi like they did with gold & silver for people who had a gameboy printer.
Dopple Boppler @ May 12th 2009 4:13PM
Pretty sure this is 100% confirmed as a DS game (meaning, not DSi exclusive). Don't expect to see DSi exclusive retail games for a long, long while.
Suichimo @ May 12th 2009 4:12PM
Anyone else remember before G/S/C, at least Crystal, came out and the screenshots had the character on a skateboard? I know it was a hell of a long time ago but for some reason that popped right into the front of my head. Too bad the site isn't there anymore.
Dopple Boppler @ May 12th 2009 4:12PM
From what I understand, the original translations (including stuff about the skateboard and whatnot) were false. I think the only details revealed were things about cutscenes revealing new areas (like in FireRed/LeafGreen), support roles from the trainer you didn't pick, and something about a Pikachu colored Pichu event.
Rein @ May 12th 2009 4:29PM
I really hate pokemon events. There's like, one Toys r Us about 30-40 minutes away depending on traffic, and I shouldn't have to go to these events in order for them to unlock stuff on the cart. That was my biggest gripe with D/P/Pt... If I pay for the game, why can't I catch all the legendaries for that generation without special keys?
B3astofthe3ast @ May 12th 2009 5:13PM
FYI, you don't need to go to toys R us for the secret key in platinum...its available via WiFi mystery gift, which is most likely how the rest of the event items will be distributed.
Rein @ May 12th 2009 5:23PM
I know that, I was just using keys as a generic term for event items since it was the first thing that popped into my head.
bongoes @ May 12th 2009 4:35PM
I hope they add an extra area like the Sevii Islands in Fire Red and Leaf Green.
Snowblind @ May 12th 2009 4:37PM
It was great to have more areas, but the Sevii areas were just horribly designed. They should have simply included Jotho, which would have been around the same size and twice as interesting to explore.
I'm assuming with this they'll simply expand Kanto, as it was massively cut down because of the Gameboy limitations.
Spike @ May 12th 2009 4:45PM
my friends definitely called skateboards in pokemon since R/S, i wouldn't care if it wasn't, but we were small, and enjoyed rocket power
Danny @ May 12th 2009 6:19PM
Rocket Power was the sickest show ever!!!
lanceyami03 @ May 12th 2009 4:45PM
Mr. David, now the only thing shown in the gameplay footage wasn't just walking....it was also shown that starters follow you around. That, too, is gameplay.
HotLimit @ May 12th 2009 4:49PM
Hahaha, wasn't that to selling point of Pokemon Yellow? I mean besides getting to start with Pikachu, of course.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 12th 2009 4:52PM
I just hope they don't do something extremly lame like changing the characters.Remember that the kid form Gold and Silver appeared in Pokémon and Ash,Misty,Brock or Gary appear too.I'm so going to pwn Ash.
Suichimo @ May 12th 2009 5:34PM
The only names they could change would be Ash and Gary. They've kept the games separate from the anime in that respect, though.
I wonder how Blue's gym is going to look this time.
Danny @ May 12th 2009 6:01PM
If I'm on a skate board how will my ferocious Feraligatr keep up?
And my guess: camera can take screenshots in the game and you can transfer those screenshots from the in game album to your photo app on the DSi.
DSi enhanced game?
Ryan @ May 13th 2009 11:28AM
I loved pokemon gold & silver, they were the best imo.
i hope the remakes offer the ability to go back to Kanto, and i hope that includes the sevii islands.
I don't like the whole skateboard thing, a traditional bike is fine for me.
I also hope the starters follow you around for the entire game :D.
& i think silver was the best rival, as he was actually "evil" you were satisfied when you beat him, cos it meant you've done right.
can't wait for the American release :D
Derick @ May 12th 2009 5:45PM
Silver is the pokemon game I miss the most. I was like 12 and had to scrape together the money for it.
Nintendo powered my teenage work ethic.
Josh @ May 12th 2009 5:53PM
"and it's hinted that you'll even get to ride around on a skateboard."
So it took them a decade to finally get it in the game.
Alistair @ May 13th 2009 10:12PM
Actually, try 12 years. Gold and Silver were set to come out in 1997, but development pushed them back to 1999. The feature was proposed, but never made the cut. Besides the skateboard, Johto had a much different layout than the final version (such as the Lake of Rage having a town).
Wow, I am such a Pokémon fanboy. >.
Josh @ May 13th 2009 10:29PM
Turns out there won't be a skateboard, after all. Haha.
tyetheczar @ May 12th 2009 6:20PM
Will they feature all the cool extras from Crystal? I wanna catch my Suikun!
Olicon @ May 12th 2009 6:37PM
My only wish is that they update the combat animation. Just let the pokemon themselves move during the combat, and I would be oh so happy. Everything else in the game is fine.
B3astofthe3ast @ May 12th 2009 7:32PM
They should just port over Pokemon Stadium 3's battle system, and keep everything else...
WRE Returns @ May 12th 2009 7:03PM
I can't wait until they release Pokemon Colon Brown and Kidney Pink.
