Cyanide acquires game rights to George R. R. Martin's 'Song of Ice and Fire' series
We don't get to talk about books much here at The Stiq, what with our heavy focus on teh gaming and all, but today is a joyous day, as the best series of books ever made -- George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series -- will be turned into games courtesy of Cyanide Studio. Don't bother arguing with us, because we do not sow and these books are so good.
The press release says that R. R. Martin and Cyanide have already begun development, with the combined efforts bearing fruit for "next generation consoles and the PC." Sadly, no other details are available as of now, but we're holding out hope that these games will be more fun than that A Game of Thrones board game ...

Hey I resent the comment about the boardgame! I got it and the 2 expansions and had tons of fun with my friends!!!
/rant
now... if only the HBO series get release...
David Hinkle @ May 12th 2009 5:05PM
Yeah, me and my group could never stomach it. *shrug*
Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. :)
Joshua @ May 12th 2009 5:05PM
yeah what the heck the board game is awesome
Stix Remix @ May 12th 2009 5:05PM
Yeah, the boardgame ranks #79 on BGG right now. So I don't think calling the game horrible is accurate.
David Hinkle @ May 12th 2009 5:12PM
Man, I really struck a nerve with you guys, eh? Glad you guys like it (even more glad that you play board games, because they rock!), but I really disliked A Game of Thrones.
Still BFF?
Markez @ May 12th 2009 5:15PM
Somebody is stating where it 'ranks' on a site apparently called BoardGameGeek, Dave. Don't think you should feel too bad ;)
David Hinkle @ May 12th 2009 5:18PM
Funny thing is, I actually linked to Board Game Geek in the post! :D
Markez @ May 12th 2009 5:23PM
Noticed that, dug around a little, and had a mild chuckle out of "top 10 lies told by boardgamers"

The HBO series is finally picking up some steam. They've got a director, and they've already cast the hilarious midget from In Bruges for the show, Peter Dinklage.
jeffeoff @ May 12th 2009 5:36PM
I concur entirely. The board game is rad. Just make sure you only play with people who have read the books and are willing to get into a "designer" game that might take a few hours. Monopoly it is not.
Vidikron @ May 12th 2009 5:04PM
I wish Martin would just finish "A Dance with Dragons". The gap between books in this series is rather ridiculous.
The Dark Wayne @ May 12th 2009 5:10PM
wow, you'd think he would license it to a developer that's actually developed something
Charlie_Six @ May 12th 2009 5:12PM
Yeah at first I was like "Cool! I'm too lazy to read the books, but I'd love to play games based on them." But now that I see Cyanide studios apparently has experience developing a game like this... I'm not so excited.
Charlie_Six @ May 12th 2009 5:14PM
That should read, apparently has no experience..
Joshua @ May 12th 2009 5:14PM
what are you talking about man?
These guys did Horse Racing Manager 1 AND 2
Seriously though, they are also working on the blood bowl game, which looks good.
This might not be terrible
Charlie_Six @ May 12th 2009 5:15PM
lol, yeah I suppose if there are horse racing parts of the game, those parts will be quality.
Don-Don @ May 12th 2009 5:20PM
I hope he doesn't die before finishing... I mean, look at the guy!
Banman @ May 12th 2009 5:40PM
You better knock on wood.
that's exactly what happened to Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time. Somehow, I knew it was destined to happen before he finished the twelfth and final book.
Doombot (zuburi) @ May 12th 2009 6:21PM
Gabe Newell ate the Gorton's fisherman!
Ghede @ May 12th 2009 8:46PM
A beard like that grants immortality, didn't you know?
undrssthemachine @ May 12th 2009 5:23PM
you know what I'm really stoked about this, with the whole 3d realms closure i didn't really know where the next "game that will be so delayed that it will never come out" would be.
But if good ol Georgie boy has anything to do with it, we can assume it'll give Duke a run for his money.
Dirty @ May 12th 2009 5:27PM
Whats with all the purple in the posts? Did Prince take over?
Markez @ May 12th 2009 5:29PM
Nah these properties are all neighborhoods belongin' to the Saints now, son! Heads up for purple ninjas!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L11xuXCcNGk
Markez @ May 12th 2009 5:48PM
Weeeeiiiiiird the next one is purple, too. In addition to ninjas, keep an eye for M. Night Shamacrap's next movie, The Purplening.
David Hinkle @ May 12th 2009 5:50PM
Haha! Good eye, the last 4 posts on Joystiq have some form of purple in the post image.
As for this image, I just snagged it from George's personal site:

The Dark Wayne @ May 12th 2009 6:31PM
wow really? the guy's written a shitload of books and his website cant do better than MS Word fonts in purple?
Markez @ May 12th 2009 6:36PM
I got some laughs out of his blog that's linked on the page Hinkle posted; http://grrm.livejournal.com/ , begins with "Star Trek Made Me Sick" and goes on to talk about the NFL draft in it as well :P
Dirty @ May 12th 2009 6:50PM
ITS NOT A BLOG!!!
Markez @ May 12th 2009 8:29PM
It's a live journal?
8a11z @ May 12th 2009 5:29PM
You got it wrong, the best book series evar is The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malazan_Book_of_the_Fallen
Blah @ May 12th 2009 5:34PM
Never tried tho, I like all the Glen Cook books, are they somewhat similar?
Blah @ May 12th 2009 5:38PM
ignore the 'tho', wonder what i was trying to type
Rico @ May 12th 2009 5:56PM
Yes, very similar to Cook, and Song of Ice and Fire... highly recommended (and Erikson churns out like a book a year, no 6-year delay bullshit)
RobT @ May 12th 2009 7:55PM
i've used erikson to tied me over during the long wait for dance of dragons :D Got stuck at the beginning of midnight tides though, the book doesn't start off strong enough to rival Karsa Orlong ;)
sohcahtoa @ May 13th 2009 3:21AM
Have to say Malazan Empire and ASoIF is my favorite epic fantasy novels... and to top it off they both are dark fantasy!!! need more dark fantasy ;x
and you guys should really pick up "A Shadow in Summer" and "The Name of the Wind" these two are fucking awesome alternative to high fantasy! Dark fantasy ftw!

Blah @ May 12th 2009 5:33PM
Gave up on the books, Since i read really fast I kinda read too much and burned out. The good things that happend to the characters would be forgotten by me and the bad would be so prominent that it all stacked up and was too much for me.
Prolly go back to it later when the show / this game come about
Banman @ May 12th 2009 5:41PM
I stopped reading because bad stuff just wouldn't stop happening to the somewhat good characters.
Blah @ May 12th 2009 6:08PM
Banman- you said it perfectly, that's why the book was be so frustrating
Stupid @ May 12th 2009 5:59PM
I have to admit that our gaming group purchased the boardgame about four weeks ago and it has already made it to cult status. We play it at least once a week with a new an exciting conclusion every time. Truly, it is not a trivial time investment but well worth it.
As a game, it's no less time consuming or complex than Diplomacy.
JWC @ May 12th 2009 6:02PM
You like this guy, go read Patrick Rothfuss. Now that's real writin'.
Sopharus @ May 13th 2009 2:57PM
Hells yes, unfortunately while they both share incredible writing talents, they also both have huge gaps between publishing books in their series. Pat's blog is a lot more fun to read than GRRM's though.
JWC @ May 13th 2009 3:01PM
I heard somewhere that the whole Kingkiller trilogy will be out within the next two years (i.e. it's done, just needs editing etc).
Hyams @ May 12th 2009 6:13PM
I'd love an Oblivion-esque game that lets you explore Westeros. The books do an excellent job of describing the country and making it feel ever so real, and I'd love to see a game expand on that.
Of course, it'll probably end up being yet another RTS.
The Dark Wayne @ May 12th 2009 6:31PM
I think i'd prefer one more in line with the witcher but with the openness of Oblivion
Jason Platt @ May 12th 2009 7:54PM
I am a big fan of the Wheel of Time series, and a friend told me to try out the George RR Martin series.
I got about halfway through the first book and could not stand it. I just didn't see it as fantasy at all. I got 300 pages in and there were no monsters, no magic, no fantasy elements at all really. Sure there was something that might have been a dragon egg, but that's it.
Plus he got pretty explicit with a sex scene involving a YOUNG girl and that is not what I expect from a fantasy novel.
The Wheel of Time series is much better (thought complicated and HUGE).
RobT @ May 12th 2009 7:57PM
i personally found Lord of Chaos to be the last wheel of time book that was palatable. Try Song of fire and ice again, once jon snow gets to the wall and tyrion starts going rogue, shit really picks up
Hyams @ May 12th 2009 8:33PM
Well, a big part of the series is that it chronicles the breakdown of a peaceful (and magicless) Summer into a chaotic, war-filled, and magical Winter.
NeopToIemy @ May 12th 2009 10:07PM
You have to get past the first book. If this game isnt steered the wrong direction, it has promise. Battle at the whispering wood, mance rayders wildling charge on the wall....Jon Snow is a BEAST!!
Jason Platt @ May 12th 2009 8:00PM
If you stopped reading WOT after LOC, then you missed out on some incredible moments at the end of Winter's Heart and Knife of Dreams.
Blah @ May 12th 2009 8:22PM
ya thats true. The books are going at a slower pace then it did in the beginning but I think it makes the overall story more enjoyable. Jordan could have cut out some of the story arcs with the girls, it seems like in every book after book 4 they all go on some wacky adventure, although i think the Amyrlin Seat arc with Egwene is awesome.
