When I heard this and Silent Hill were heading to iPhone/iTouch, I figured it was time to finally give in to the Apple machine- then I saw the SH screenshots and laughed my ass off. This looks only slightly better. The airport scene in Degeneration is the only worthwhile part of the film. I remember watching it thinking, "this would make an awesome game," and then the whole movie went to shit...

I'll have to dig up some more media and reviews on this, but it's going to have to really impress me if I'm going to drop $250 on an iPod... Aww, forget it, it's a lost cause. I love my PSP and I know I'd end up regretting this. It can only fail miserably in comparison. I'll just wait and buy a 3rd PSP model.

yeah i had a psp and ds a month ago. i tried tiger woods 10 and need for speed and they are much better than the psp versions. games are getting better and better on iphone/ipod touch and people love to hate on it as a gaming platform at joystiq but there are tons of amazing games and they are priced much better than a $40 psp game and many are much better than psp games

Don't buy one because you feel like you're missing out on games. There's some good stuff in the App Store, but I wouldn't buy a Touch just for the games.

If you'll use the web browser, music player, and other apps often, it's a good buy.

@johnny: But most games on either the DS or PSP will play for much longer than games on the Iphone/touch probably giving justification for the higher price tags. And not only longer games but much better graphical quality compared to the Iphone/touch.

Again, I'm not saying that the iphone/touch games are complete garbage but rather saying that I (emphasis on I) do not feel it has the potential to be considered a gaming platform.

Yeah I noticed that too.

I haven't purchased an iPhone game in a few months but apparently RE: Degeneration is quite good so I jumped on it.

You know what? It's actually good! Kept my attention for longer than 1 hour. I can't give the seal of approval just yet, but so far I'm having a lot of fun. It takes me back to the Resident Evil PSX days.

Call me crazy but I still do not understand all the attention the Iphone/touch is getting in terms of game industry press. I don't feel that the Iphone/touch is a viable game platform. The only pro I see here is that it's exceptionally portable and almost everyone has one.

Some of it's cons include: Bad battery life, near PS2 quality graphics (subjective), and an almost non existent controller layout (making certain games nearly unplayable), and the fact that it may not be possible to create a decent game that doesn't last 1 or 2 hours.

I know I'm a little harsh on it (I own one myself) but I really think that games on the iphone/touch are just as passable as crappy flash inspired games on regular cellphones, aside from a few notable exceptions (Rolando, etc).

The reason it is not a real gaming system is because it would fail if all it did was play games. That being said, the platform's games are generally geared toward casual use, which is good for a cellphone/PMP. There are good things on the system, but aside from the few notable exceptions, the library would be laughable if it were all available in a PSP store.

Also, the graphical capabilities are closer tithe PS1. You can tell in games that try to push more polys. Look at BIA. It renders less polys a lot better than ps1 though, look at Monkey Ball.

I think people need to understand that not all iphone/touch games are flash based and like other cell phone games, have you even played the new need for speed, or tiger woods? I have been playing these for a week or so straight and they are deep games.

Second the iphone does have as good graphics as a psp you just need to pick the right games. Need for speed and terminator are just two examples of games that look as good as almost any psp game. Assasins creed is another example of a game looking as good as any psp game. The app store is only like 11 or 10 months old and we have at least 10 must have iphone games right now. The only downside i see that is a valid arguement is lack of control pad makes some games harder to play, but in the case of assasins creed it still is an amazing game! Battery life an issue? My iphone lasts all day and have you people heard of auto chargers for your car. you can plug in the iphone to any usb port or ac outlet but my iphone lasts all day without any problem, lasts longer than psp for me

Meh...it definitely has gaming potential. Not 'hardcore real gaming' gaming, but for some TD Games or Peggle, it's great.

Saying that, you shouldn't consider it a direct competitor to real handhelds, but rather a quick alternative. Is it better than a DS? No. Would you specifically dedicate your time to play it? Probably not. Is it perfect for short five to twenty minute sessions while you're talking a dump or skipping through a couple of bus stops? Fuck yeah.

johnny: I disagree. The PSP can definitely push far more polygons than the iPhone while keeping a much higher frame rate. The games you mention look good, but they are made for the iPhone platform. If they were on the PSP, they would have more room with the hardware to produce better looking games.

Compare any WipeOut game to any racing game on the iPhone. Compare Killzone Liberation and a Medal of Honor to iPhone games like Brothers in Arms.

The battery life is definitely not as long lasting with constant use than my 1st gen PSP either. PSP battery beats out the iPhone battery by a long shot. It doesn't mean it's a bad thing, because I've never been inclined to play an iPhone game (or multiple iPhone games for that matter) for 3 hours or more straight like I have on a PSP.

Lastly, I have to point out that none of the games in the App Store are Flash based. They may be based off of a Flash game, but they had to recode the games on iPhone's SDK, as the iPhone doesn't support Flash of any kind yet. I think you meant this anyway.

I do have to agree that the ability to charge the iPhone through a USB on any computer is a giant plus and helps alleviate the shorter battery life though. I've been in positions with dead iPhon battery and the ability to charge it a lot more often than a dead PSP and a charger laying around. So many people have iPods, most of the time I can just call out "anybody got an iPod charger?" but nobody has a PSP charger handy.

The first 15-20 minutes were amazing, then it just lost too much momentum. The pacing was all off. It did pick up a bit near the end, but I was bored with it by then. I'm a huge RE fan and was eagerly looking forward to the movie, but it just didn't do it for me... :(

iPhone has a LOT of users... just like the 360 over PS3 in the States. If there is a potential audience they will build a game around for it.

"and the ability to shake the phone to shake off zombies"

Cringes.

If Apple wants the iPhone to be taken seriously as a portable game platform it may want to lay off the embarrassing gimmicks. Though I can understand that seeing as it has no buttons it has little choice but to resort to such things. And as for trying to replicate buttons with virtual on-screen buttons? One of the great things about button control is the tactile feedback and sensory pleasure of pushing buttons.

I haven't played it yet, but it sounds like it could work. I have to applaud Capcom's use of the Wiimote in RE4; aside from the obvious great aiming system utilizing the infrared, the accelerometer was used perfectly to swing the knife. Best use of the Wiimote IMO. Maybe they did a good job here too? Not buyin it yet though. I'll let the reviews pile up first.
