'Next' Kojima project teaser site now open

The Kojima Productions teaser website is now live. It may seem like a day early, according to the mysterious email that was passed around, but don't forget that Japan is generally a day ahead of the rest of us. The site looks very similar to the Japanese magazine teaser, in that it shows a field under a sky of storm clouds which meander wistfully across the screen.
Other than that, there's very little to see. No doubt it will be updated again on May 18 (May 17 for the rest of us) as the magazine teaser suggested. The only thing we have to go on -- and it's not much -- is that the webpage source code lists "MGS" and "Metal Gear" in the meta description. In contrast, the main page of the Kojima Productions website lists all of Kojima's previous games, even Policenauts and Snatcher.
Confirmation that this "Next" project is a new Metal Gear title? Hardly -- though it does make it that little bit more likely.
[Thanks, Matthew!]

I bet all gaming sites are hoping it's a 360 announcement just to increase the traffic on their sites..
XBL: Burritoclock @ May 14th 2009 12:25PM
Wait, so Japan exist in some sort of time Vortex where it is "generally" a day ahead, but sometimes is not?
Ok, I know what you meant, I couldn't not do it.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 14th 2009 12:28PM
Maybe it's the rumored shooter he's supposedly working on. I'd love to see how good/bad a japanese developer would do trying to adapt to the current industry and making a more western style game. It could be a turning point for Japan, or it could be one of the most hilariously painful trainwrecks ever.
Hyams @ May 14th 2009 12:31PM
Well, isn't that was what Quantum Theory is meant to be doing?
Also, what's up with Quantum Theory? It's meant to be releasing this year, but we've yet to see anything of it but that one CGI trailer.
SoulBlade @ May 14th 2009 1:45PM
you remember back in the day when Miyamoto said he could have made Halo and Bungie responded by saying they could make a fat plumber platformer? THAT is what I'm waiting for - a Bungie platformer would be pretty dope.
Charlie_Six @ May 14th 2009 3:01PM
Man, if you follow tmacair's posts, you'll see he's some kind of video game bigot. Anything remotely mentioning Japan demands a post from tmacair about Western supremacy. This has got to be at least the 30th post I've seen from him stating this.
What the hell is wrong with you? Did the Japanese kill your grandpa in WW2 or something? Did you get fat from eating too many Ramen noodles?
tmacairjordan87 @ May 14th 2009 3:18PM
Nope, my eyes were opened after playing Oblivion just how much better WRPGs are and I realized that Japan has been stuck in the 90s still when you look at the games they're producing. MGS 4 was a step in the right direction, but then again Kojima had Ryan Payton there telling him how to adapt to current game design. The result was a much more playable MGS gameplay and control wise.
Leobebes (BDF: Braid Defence Force) @ May 14th 2009 4:32PM
Wow tmac that was a very honest, accurate, and intuitive assessment. I guess there are some Kojima fans out there who get it and what improvement where improvement is deserved.
Here's a cookie.
el serpiente @ May 14th 2009 5:45PM
I don't think Kojima needed Ryan Payton to tell him how to do anything. MGS4 was unapologetically Kojima like all the other MGS before. I don't think that there was really anything in the game that was done differently to cater to the western audience. People love Kojima games because they are Kojima games. Not because they see something "western" in them.
If we were talking about the old tired jrpg formulas that are cranked out by square-enix, then yeah I could agree. But using MGS series as an example, no.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 14th 2009 6:35PM
"I don't think that there was really anything in the game that was done differently to cater to the western audience"
Play MGS 1-3 and then 4 and you'll notice how different 4 plays. First of all, it's more of a 3rd person shooter than stealth game (although I guess you can still play stealth if you want). Second the controls, which have always been a weak point in MGS games, have been upgraded to play more like current 3rd person action games like Uncharted.
Yeah everything else is typical Kojima, but the controls and style of gameplay were heavily influenced by Ryan Payton's advice.
el serpiente @ May 14th 2009 8:27PM
Well, there could be a more "western" button configuration (X to advance instead of O) but I don't think MGS4 was anything remotely close to an FPS in any way.
I happen to be playing through MGS3 again now for the first time since finishing 4, and I just don't really see that much variation in the MGS dna. I'll go thru 4 again after 3 and see if there are really that many differences...
Bill$ @ May 18th 2009 10:34PM
el serpiente? ...nobody said anything about FPS.. you seem to be missing the poster's points above you.. MGS will always be a third person game.. and besides.. ryan payton DID influence kojima into changing the controls and gameplay.. let me ask.. which version of MGS3 are you playing? SNake eater or Subsistence?.. im betting youre playing subsistence since you cant tell the shift in gameplay.. oh and did i forget to say that Ryan Payton became a part of Kojima Productions during MGS3?

the thing is how would that work on a console? will it access the internet to get weather info? i think it could work but i don't feel like going through the possibilities
XBL: Burritoclock @ May 14th 2009 12:54PM
Well not every one is online, so more likely it would just use console time although that would be lame.
Gillfigno @ May 14th 2009 12:58PM
Did they ever say this was for consoles?

Is it just me or does it look like there are two snakes in the grass directly front and center on that page? Right in front at the bottom in the grass, it looks like a dark snake on the left and a light snake on the right. Probably just my eyes playing tricks on me at this point.
Comtar @ May 14th 2009 1:11PM
Notice the file is called Kumori...
Only thing I could find with that word was Sushi, an Anime convention called Kumori-con, and a Katana.
The clouds scream Raiden by the way... Don't remember the exact quote of MGS4, but Snake picks up Raiden's feelings by talking about an oncoming storm in some way...
Gillfigno @ May 14th 2009 1:12PM
"Kumori" is Japanese for cloudy weather.
Comtar @ May 14th 2009 1:37PM
Really? Tell google that. :P I didn't come up with that anywhere.

Don't know if it's worth mentioning, but as I stared at the clouds, I saw nothing but eyes. They're everywhere, scrolling across the screen. I'm pretty sure I see the eyes off of the cover of MGS2 as well...
Chan @ May 14th 2009 1:32PM
It is MGS for the 360 which they should be revealing during E3.

Kevin949 @ May 14th 2009 2:01PM
as was stated by someone else, the page source info includes MGS and Metal Gear Solid as keywords for a search. Soooo....
eldee @ May 14th 2009 2:07PM
Maybe it has MGS as keywords for a search because they want to hype up a new franchise by increasing search results? This is common SEO practice.. when a company releases product B, they use product A as a companion search in order to draw more users to the fresh product.
Overall I think all of this speculation is pointless. Regardless of what the game actually IS, it's not going to see the light of day for at least five years based on kojima's track record.
Brian @ May 14th 2009 2:29PM
If you zoom the image twice on the teaser site and then move to the bottom right hand corner there appears to be an image of a man. Kind of resembles Colonel Campbell.
