PETA reacts strangely to Overlord II's 'Whack-a-Seal' minigame
When we received the press release about Overlord II's Whack-a-Seal game being hosted on IGN, we immediately thought of the animal crusaders over at PETA. Considering the organization had recently done a seal clubbing protest in World of Warcraft, we figured it would have something to say about the promotional minigame.
Instead, PETA sent us a response back about some place called Can-a-da. Apparently, baby seals are killed by the "hundreds of thousands" there and we may soon see "PETA-made helmets for baby seals."
When asked for comment about the seal hunts, our token Canadian Xav de Matos commented, "I do not live in an igloo ... I live in a city and I have health insurance! Stop asking me stupid questions like that! Oh, and it is pronounced ZED!"
Jeez ... we just wanted to know. Check out PETA's full statement after the break.
PETA statement:
Not only is "Picking on others weaker than you" in the instructions for Whack-a-Seal, it's also the name of Canada's seal slaughter game. PETA is pleased that Whack-a-Seal is drawing attention to Canada's annual seal slaughter, during which sealers beat and skin hundreds of thousands of baby seals every year for products that are now banned in the U.S. and in Europe. In real life, seals don't have helmets and can't fight back, but perhaps you'll soon see PETA-made helmets for baby seals in Canada.

I wish us Canadians could slaughter PETA members, instead.

Why just Canada? Hell, they can help the Middle East: PETA can be the enemy everyone can hate.

Check out the Funny Video called , "Catch The Lobster Club The Seal" , by the Cape Breton Comedy team .. 4 Men In A Tub: its pretty funny .. I'd love to club a Peta member .. I really wish PETA would stop saying Canada kills BABY SEALS because its an out right lie... NO BABY SEALS are killed in the regulated seal harvest..NONE NONE NONE , its against the law. The only reason people think BABY SEALS are killed is because PETA keeps spewing out the same pile of bull.. DFO has conficated Paul Watsons boat the Farley Mowat , the Capt and crew were found guilty of a bunch of things, and they are not getting the boat back EVER. I can't wait to go see the "sinking of the Mowat" unless someone sinks it at the dock first. Its docked at the Sydport Industrial Dock on the west side of Sydney Harbour here on Cape Breton Island the most beautiful Island in North America (according to Travel and Leisure Magazine) I am not a fisherman of any kind, but this is one of the Canadians way of life in certain parts of the country. Its terrible that other Countries ban seal products based on the what PETA spews out rather than have one of their bias politicians come to our country and watch the hunt for themselves and make up their own mind. Peta makes it look like some kind of blood sport using fuzzy white seals with big brown eyes as the target of the fishermans enjoyment. The hunt is not a sport and is not enjoyment its a way of life for some, and a very dangerous occupation.. and nutjobs like Peta make it even more dangerous, PETA WILL be held accountable if someone dies due to their actions on the ice flows.. The gloves are off, DFO are sick of PETA'S lies .. I hope to see you at the sinking of the Farley Mowat.. if your not there I'll have a beer for you ..

We just gotta ignore them, and they'll go away. They have the right idea but just lose all sense of reason and logic in the translation.

Is this anything where they tried to paint the seals fur to lower their market value, only to make them giant targets for polar bears?

how about a game where we get to club annoying commenters? Or the kid always screaming when I play online?
Blank-Mage @ May 15th 2009 2:20AM
Clubbing the kid just makes him louder. Until you club him harder, then the cops get all uppity.
tobz1000 @ May 15th 2009 4:28AM
So... PETA like this game? I'm a little confused.
Johnnydoo @ May 17th 2009 5:56PM
They should go and save some animals instead of complaining and writing texts and going on the street and creating petitions.... gawd!
The Dark Wayne @ May 15th 2009 8:30AM
They do realize the entire point of Overlord is to be an evil motherfucker don't they? So technically the game reinforces the idea that clubbing baby seals is evil doesn't it?
Mike @ May 15th 2009 8:50AM
I should point out that the whole PETA/McCartney anti-sealhunt issue is a big load of bullshit and misinformation.
The facts that the McCartneys won't tell you:
-It is illegal to kill baby seals
-90% of hunted seals are killed by bullet. They are only clubbed when the shot wasn't fatal.
-Compared with other small/medium game, the method of killing seals is extremely humane. For instance, rabbit snares often won't kill it right away, forcing it to bleed to death and suffer horribly.
-The hunting of polar bears (predator to seals) and new, strict regulations against cod fishing (a common food for seals) has meant that the seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence suffer from massive overpopulation. Quotas for seal hunts are designed to compensate for this, and if the seal hunt is stopped then many baby seals would die from starvation, and with no predators their corpses would remain, spreading disease and infection and thus killing more seals.
-Unlike almost every other medium game, 100% of the seal is used (the meat, skin, bones, etc.).
-The hunt provides significant income for many families (a good friend of mine in particular lives partially off what his father makes by hunting seals).
But no, Paul and Heather want everyone to think that only baby seals are killed and are clubbed over the skull repeatedly.
SimonBob @ May 15th 2009 9:54AM
Bravo, mate. Exactly what I was thinking of posting.
Nitemare1 @ May 15th 2009 9:01AM
@Mike Keep spreading the thruth Mike. It's bound to catch on sooner or later. If people would do some research and get the facts of a situation instead of following blindly, PETA wouldn't have nearly half its supporters.
Singular Trap @ May 15th 2009 9:03AM
Oh, too funny! It's SO meta to quote Xav in there!
diamondberyllium @ May 15th 2009 9:42AM
PETA is right. The seal massacres perpetrated by a handful of thugs in Canada are the largest, most savage massacre of wildlife on the planet. It is an international crime and there is no excuse for it. "Mike" is repeating the lies and propaganda of the DFO.
First Myth: Seals are overpopulated: The seal population is dropping like a rock, a catastrophe has been occuring where seal nurseries have disappeared because of ice loss due to global warming. 90% of the pups were killed in the last two years for this reason in the last two years, and on top of this the massacres kill around half the remaining pups. The Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland were free of ice last year for the first time on record, and where there should have been hundreds of thousands of seals returning to mate and give birth, there were none. Even the DFO propagandists admit at least 70% of the seals will be gone by 2015.
Second myth: Seals eat all the fish. Seals are an essential part of a carefully balanced ecosystem, where seals eat the predators of the food fish that Newfoundland depends on. For instance, seals eat skates, rays, sculpin, capelin, squid, silver hake, dogfish, etc. These things are mostly unfit for human consumption but they prey on cod, their minnows, spawn, & eggs. With less seals the predators are rampant, meaning that populations of cod and other food fish Canada exterminated by 1992 have not recovered. It was not the seals that wiped out the fish; it was greedy sealers who are enemies of the their own fishing communities and the incompetent and corrupt Canadian government. The claim that seals will "starve" if they are not killed is another propaganda point. Seals maintain their own balance. when there were 40 million seals on Canada’s shores there was no fish shortage and the settlers remarked fish were so abundant they could "walk across their backs "
Third myth: The hunt is humane. It is definitely not. The claim that most of them are "shot" painlessly is outright lies. That only happens in the "second phase" of the massacre when the seals are more mobile. According to accounts of the sealers themselves, bullets spoil the coats when they leave a hole in them, so they will choose clubs. Even when they are "shot", the sealers come around to club them and drag them off with hooks while they are still alive. A huge percent of seals that are shot escape with their wounds to die slowly beneath the ice. Despite Canadian govt propaganda FILMED evidence of cruelty was obtained in 2009 of seals SKINNED ALIVE, injured seals left to suffer on the ice, and wounded seals allowed to escape beneath the water's surface where they endure a slow and painful death. Those filmed and documented footages have been obtained year after year. They show brutal scenes of baby seals screaming in fear and pain and their mothers trying to protect the bloodied bodies of the pups from the savages, and seals writhing still alive in bloodied heaps of dead seals. Also every year veterinary reports have shown an average of 42% of the seal pups were still alive when they were skinned.
Fourth myth: "seals are not babies". Seals start changing their coats at ten days old. -95% of all the Harp seals killed are still babies, 2-6 weeks old. they are still not able to eat solid food or swim, and they are dependent either on their nursing mothers or on their blubber to survive. whitecoats-younger than two weeks- are still killed illegally and the massacre takes place over hundreds of square miles of ice-the Canadian government has no ability to monitor it. SEALS live 30 to 40 years, a human 60 to 80, so a 3 week old seal compares to a 6 week old baby. Sealers will try to con you and say now it's not a baby anymore. A scam to get away with killing them.
The Canadian commercial seal hunt is to marine mammals what the holocaust was to humans. Crimes of this magnitude should never be forgotten and never, ever forgiven as to do so would lower the stature of humankind itself.
Never again should so many people ( Canadians who oppose the seal hunt ) and animals ( the millions of defenseless baby seals which have been ruthlessly butchered ) be subjected to such savagery nor to such callous disregard for another intelligent, sentient, living being.
