Rumor: Pictures show 'slim' PS3 model in production

We hope you like salt, because you should take these images with a couple of handfuls of it. Game Column & Blog has posted what could be pictures of the outer shell and box for an unannounced, slimmed-down PlayStation 3.

The purported new model swaps out the shiny 'Piano Black' exterior for a textured look like that of the PS2, and, for some reason, ditches the Spider-Man font for a logo that is also more in line with the PS2. Actually, now that we think about it, it makes a lot of sense to model an upcoming PS3 redesign after the still-successful PS2.

These pictures arrive amidst rumors that, in addition to the (rumored) PSP Go!, some other new Sony hardware may be unveiled at E3. If those rumors are true, and if the new hardware is a PS3, then ... these pictures could still be fake.

Wouldn't do a better job of cooking then my 360, the steak would still look raw after an hour of being on top of it, noone would get fed :D

Saying that, both consoles look as beautiful as they are, neither need slimming down.

Sorry I didn't mean to start an argument. The "compelling games" comment didn't sit right with me seeing that GOW !!!, White Knight, GT5, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, and MAG are all right around the corner. Sony by far has the best line up of up coming games.

Yea, but as it stands, they do not exist yet, even so, like I said, compelling is to the person what they believe compelling to be, not everyone wants to play Wii games, not everyone wants to play MAG or Halo, it just depends on where your interests lie

I was just making a jab at the large number of SKUs and comparatively small library of games (compared to the PS2, and I know it's not a fair comparison, it's making fun of the PS3, that's the joke).

There's nothing wrong with updating your product. It worked for the PS2, which had 14 versions over time (even before the slim!). The 360 has many SKUs too (for example they slipped a DVD into the Core and renamed it the Arcade).

Furthermore, a large size reduction would decrease production costs and shipping costs quite a bit and could lead to a much needed price cut.

So I don't get the beefing about the number of SKUs. It's just not a big issue. Also, the platform has virtually all the same games that 360 has, so the game library is also quite large. I don't get the beefing about that either. So the joke fails to be funny and fails to be poignant. Maybe that's why it's getting a bad reception on joystiq.

You know, all fanboyishness aside - He has a point: do we really need more SKUs? New or not, I think most of us would rather see a price drop, that way more people get the PS3 we have, instead of all of the late-comers getting something newer than ours ;)

amirite? I mean, give me a new PS3 in a year or two, when I'm not still within 2 years of buying this one, ya know?
