Big Surf Island adds 15 events, 10 freeburn challenges to Burnout Paradise

These early details come courtesy of an early look at the DLC's Trophies. (Check out the new Trophies after the break.) One particularly intriguing achievement involves getting a whopping 4.5 seconds of air time in a single jump. Who needs Burnout Planes when you have massive jumps like that?
Our very own Randy Nelson got some hands-on time with the DLC pack, but he can't report on the details quite yet. Expect a full preview on May 28.

This game has a ridiculous amount of trophies,I bought it last week and I got more than 10 trophies in 30 minutes.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 15th 2009 3:53PM
Oh yeah and is friggin awesome.
Seriously Sony would you please release the Pre-paid cards here already? I wanted to buy Cops and Robbers.
MLS @ May 15th 2009 4:00PM
I have cops n robbers but hardly ever play it because most strangers tend to be whiny 14 year olds or angry rednecks. Anyone from here have it, and play every so often?
XBL tag: "Rocket no 9"
also, Big Surf seems like a huge amusement park. awesome.
Latin_Trident @ May 15th 2009 7:03PM
I play it with my friends. We play it a lot more often now with the Cops & Robbers DLC. Yeah some kids are immature. I'll send you a friends request if you want to play.
Cameron @ May 17th 2009 11:20AM
I'm pretty sure i saw the one of the burnout bloggers bragging (bbb) about how Burnout holds the most trophies for a single game. It's funny i'm 3% away from platinum ; but i don't want to buy a web cam. Clever ploy criterion.
Also CnR - waste of money if you ask me, yeh you get all those extra cop cars but seriously, most of the Freeburn time i spend is simply cruising around - it's rare for me to get a decent host who will be running games all the time. For most games i either get
1) Nothing at all
2) Freeburn Challenges Gallore for trophies
3) STUNT RUN STUNT RUN STUNT RUN
*sighs* if only there was preset games.
Storm Eagle @ May 15th 2009 3:54PM
What an awesome game Burnout Paradise is from start to finish. I mean, it's not enough the game rocked from it's original state, but with all this extra content it just keeps getting better. I so can't wait for this....
Zertoss @ May 15th 2009 4:36PM
I'm beginning to wonder if there is a finish. It's more like it's awesome from start to this point in time. Who knows how awesome it will be later this year? The same? Less? More?
I'm betting on more.

UPDATE: My new favorite Trophy/Achievement: Jump Through Deese's Donut
Who's Donuts? DEESE'S DONUTS!
THE Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ May 15th 2009 5:26PM

+1 lol
Neuromancer @ May 15th 2009 4:05PM
What ever happened to planes, seriously... Just an ongoing joke?
rohan @ May 15th 2009 4:13PM
u never know, but i doubt if they plan to do it that they will add it to paradise. Maybe a later game?
banJovi @ May 15th 2009 4:05PM
Criterion is really, kinda pissing me off with the teasing of this update. They've been going on and on about it for the last 6 months.
So are they actually going to set a date, or are they worried their little hype machine is losing steam?
Don't mean to hate, but 75% of the $30-40 of DLC I've purchased has been well overpriced. I'm glad I paid only $30 for the game off PSN so I don't really feel that ripped off.
Phenomenal game actually, but I'm not the only one who feels they are taking the piss a bit.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ May 15th 2009 4:07PM
15 events...hardly the 'complete DLC sequel to Burnout Paradise' people were hyping it to be, but hell I'll pick it up anyway.
jsut @ May 15th 2009 4:09PM
Building on the left is a pretty good match for Marina Towers in Chicago http://armknecht.com/store/uploaded_images/marina-towers-backup.jpg
Kelly @ May 15th 2009 4:20PM
Uhhhhgggg...I miss burnout revenge...and the older burnout games as well...paradise didn't seem much like a burnout game at all.
JerJer @ May 15th 2009 4:41PM
lol were we playing the same game?
although i agree there wasn't much of the cartoony crash engine left, paradise is more visceral, more (dare i say?) realistic, and more metal crunching, hardcore, destruction. the speed, and graphics and detail made this the best burnout ever
and the truest to the series' vision i think.
Mazrael @ May 15th 2009 5:00PM
Hardly realistic.. the physics are all over the place, the cars all feel like they're made out of paper - they're just too light, collision detection isn't great. One of the last cars is a full on race car (not the formula 1 looking car) but it has absolutly no downforce.... car spawns are annoying too
I've got 35 events left on it now for my elite license, haven't bothered with online yet. I'm hoping that the island maxes out the chieves on offline stuff (it only has 1140 on 360)
Woz @ May 15th 2009 4:23PM
The number of events makes it sound like it's a small island, but the layout of the roads could make it much larger than I think it is.
Snake Robot Podium @ May 15th 2009 4:27PM
three words and a punctuation mark: game-changing content?
...or is that two words?
dogmaticatheist @ May 15th 2009 4:35PM
This game rocks.
Flankenstein @ May 15th 2009 4:35PM
Who's still playing this game? It was fun for awhile, but it's just the same thing over and over and over and over....
I would pay for a crash mode though.
epthegeek @ May 15th 2009 4:49PM
Boooo. Only 10 freeburn challenges is abysmally low.
Fader @ May 15th 2009 6:30PM
I was very disappointed to read that too. The challenges are my favorite part of the game. I was hoping that there would be dozens of new challenges. I figured that they would even make some deeper challenges beyond the usual "do this x times" or "jump over this thing".
ill trooper @ May 16th 2009 3:12AM
I was hoping I misread that. 10? To be clear, I'm understanding it correctly, right? I mean, it's confusing, because if what they call challenges and what I call challenges are the same thing (I'm thinking "Drive reverse in oncoming traffic for 2000 yards") then "10 new challenges" is disappointing. They could make that up before lunch. It's a huge city they made, there are plenty of things to do, things to jump, billboards to smash! Go crazy! Put some interns on it! They could make 200 new challenges inside of a week I bet, and the best 100 could be DLC.
I
moominsean @ May 15th 2009 4:50PM
i read this as 'big smurf island'...was sooo excited!
TeethMummy @ May 15th 2009 5:10PM
only 15 events? That's unexpectedly low.
Deaddy @ May 15th 2009 5:19PM
I can't believe how few events and challenges this includes. What a huge disappointment. We're getting this instead of a sequel, and it's gonna be over in about 2 hours. I appreciate all the tweaks they've done and free challenges and stuff, but after more than a year I would rather have a full sequel in a new city. Weak.
Rhamsey @ May 15th 2009 5:53PM
oh, cant wait for this. wonder what the achievements are going to be though, as there aren't as many of those.
Marky264 @ May 15th 2009 5:55PM
15 Events and only 10 Freeburn Challenges? I'm so disppointed. They have been going on about this 'HUGE' Update since the first DLC was announced more than 8 Months ago. 15 Events and only 10 Freeburn challenges is nothing and I could do all of these achievements within an Hour. I'm just dreading the price they are going to put on this. I've been a sucker and bought the rest of the DLC available. I'm incredibly proud of Criterion to continue backing this game til this point but lack of Freeburn Challenges are a huge disappointment for me for this DLC Pack. They better not charge us Seperate for the Dust Storm Buggy. But i'll sit back and wait and pay for whatever ridiculas price they charge.
ZEN @ May 15th 2009 6:19PM
I don't know why everyone is complaining... Big Surf Island, even with just 15 Events/10 Freeburn Challenges, is still something Criterion didn't even have to do. They could have easily just stuck to releasing new DLC cars and a few new gameplay modes... though I suppose its rather odd they didn't add 12 trophies to bring the total up to an even 100.
But anywho, they're taking the time to build a whole new area... its not like this is an existing area in the game that they're just adding events to - no, its an area that doesn't already exist, that they're building from scratch AND adding new junk to. And, if Paradise City is any indication, they're going to be putting a lot of detail and work into the Island.
The only thing I'm unhappy with is there's no DLC forecast post-Island... which makes me think this is the last of it before they begin work on Burnout 6. It still won't hamper my good times in Paradise, though... but that's just me.
ill trooper @ May 16th 2009 3:16AM
"I don't know why everyone is complaining..."
Because we love this game and we want this new DLC to have more events and challenges. Now you know.
burnout fiend @ May 16th 2009 8:46PM
after the massive ripoff that is cops and robbers, I am reluctant to purchase any more from these guys. for so long i have waited for bigsurf i just dont care anymore. according to the cops and robbers price this should only cost about 4800ms points and probably last me a good 10 mins.
all the goodwill from free updates is long GONE, respect minus for criterion. plus yeah how many times will we all have to download a 1gb update again. im so glad that every week i have to download a new massive update just to get online ffs. they really have lost it.
