It looks like SNK is already preparing to outfit King of Fighters XII with DLC. The upcoming fighting game will have additional purchased content available on the Xbox Live Marketplace (as uncovered by Siliconera) and, presumably, on PSN as well. What that content is exactly, we don't know just yet; however, we assume this means more costumes and game modes a la Street Fighter IV. Maybe it means more characters ... like all the ones missing from the roster screen.
In addition to DLC, KoF XII has console-specific online modes. The PS3 version features a "Clan" mode which is not found on the 360 version (check out the image above); however, the 360 version has a "Ranked Match" option while the PS3 version does not. Hmm ... you don't think SNK would charge for these modes as paid DLC now, would it?

what he's trying to say is... Namco didn't charge for the content... they became available with a patch.

What happened in Soul Calibur games before DLC existed on consoles? They still had console specific characters in some of them, only instead of paying $5 to get them on the other console you had NO option to get them on the other console short of buying the entire game all over again.
You're assuming that if DLC did not exist, Vader and Yoda would be on both consoles. Chances are, you are wrong. If DLC didn't exist, Vader would only be on the PS3 with NO option to get him on the 360, and Yoda would only be on the 360 with NO option to get him on the PS3, just like with Soul Calibur 2. Want to play as Spawn on the Gamecube? Too bad, you can't. You have to have the PS2 version for that.
So basically, without DLC 360 owners could never play as Vader. With DLC, they have the option to pay $5 to play as Vader. At least having the option for people that think it is worth the money is better than having no option at all.

Spawn is only on the XBOX version, not PS2... PS2 has the worst character of the 3: Heihachi!
And the Vader/Yoda Paid DLC was planned early. There IS a EMPTY SLOT for the paid character on each version of the game... in Soul Calibur 2, there is no empty slot ;)
So namco S U C K S

"The great thing about the 360 isn't beating the games, it's showing everyone online that I did."
Right? (google that and you'll get it)

I guess I'll jump to this bozo's defense, even if I'm arguing a different point than he originally intended. Ranked is such a basic mode these days, especially for a competitive game. Clan, on the other hand, seems to be a relatively useless feature for a fighting game, especially if your clan can't even be ranked! UNLESS... What if each member of your clan plays a different character on your three person team in a match? You'd really have to depend on your teammates. Now that would be something else, and something completely unprecedented in a fighting game. And it'd be entirely freaking awesome to see your first two guys fall, while your buddy pulls through in the clutch and beats the entire three person team by himself with a sliver of life left.

First off, indefensible troll is indefensible. Don't try to defend that logic or you'll just get slammed by association. Period. Leave trolls to die under a bridge.
Second, I'll say it. Ranked matches in fighting games are the slums as far as I'm concerned. In ranked, you get people who desperately want that win no matter what. What this means is they're refuse to change characters, move spam, and other annoying behaviors that make fighting games no longer fun. The win is the reason they're playing, not the game or the sense of competition. Ranked Players, in EVERY fighting game I've played online, are fucking prats. And with a series so plagued by infinite combo loops as KOF, I'm avoiding this mode at all cost.
HOWEVER, Player Matches never fail to amuse. Because you get people who change up their rosters, try bizarre stuff. Some treat it as practice but that means they don't do annoying prat behaviors. Unranked matches most closely resemble, to me, having friends over with some beer and pounding away on Saturn arcade sticks on a Saturday.

Sheppy, with most games if you play a ranked match it matches you with a new opponent after each match anyway, so whether or not they change characters doesn't really matter since you're not playing them more than once anyway.
And while in SF4 the ranked matches are full of plenty of Ken shoryuken spammers, they're really easy to put out of their misery after a little while leveling up with those easy wins you start getting matched against better opponents.
Also, if you haven't tried championship mode in SF4 yet you really should. For whatever reason, people there are way, way, way more legit than in the ranked matches. It's the same concept so I'm not sure how all the spammers got filtered out of it, but somehow they did. This is on the 360 btw, but I would imagine it's the same on the PS3.

That is exactly why I never set foot in one Gears of War ranked match. I consider myself to be very skilled in most shooters and while I could probably compete on a higher level than for recreation it just turns people into assholes during the game. I like a more laid back fun experience, and I usually take it a little easier and not focus so much on dominating the other team or on myself but making it fun for everyone.

I asked the same question...and actually did some research afterward to come up with this:
Rock isn't a KOF fighter...well not really. He is actually from game called "Garou: Mark of the Wolves". It was an SNK game. This is why he is featured (PLAYABLE) in many spin-offs as well, such as "Neo Geo Batlle Coliseum" and of course CAPvsSNK series as well as many others (Maximum Impact series).
The only time he is referenced as a KOF fighter is in the anime "The King of Fighters: Another Day".
I just read up on this and was pissed off that there is an extremely high chance (83%) ROCK won't be in the new KOF.

You're technically right, but most of the King of Fighters characters aren't King of Fighters characters, per se. KoF was one of the first series that took characters from many fighting games and jumbled them all together for a battle royale, ala the Marvel Vs. series that we're all familiar with. Terry and Andy are from Fatal Fury (the series as Mark of the Wolves), Ryo and Robert are from Art of Fighting, Clark and Ralf are from Ikari Warriors. There's really no reason Rock couldn't be included in DLC or another KoF iteration in the future.

snk does everything according to a time line, rock probably still isnt old enough? wasn't it kof 2003 were terry was wearing a Garou MOTW outfit and rock would come out with his win pose, rock was like what 10/11 years old back then? that makes him 16/17 now, still too young for the tournament
when you see characters filter in from garou MOTW is when you'll see rock
i think ryo and the aof team are the only exception(retroactively de-aged) to this time line rule, ryo and everyone should be in their 30's and takuma should be dead

Yeah it does seem more like a timeline thing than anything. After all, wasn't Garou set 10 years into the future? I know Terry was old as hell in that game. I'm just happy my favorite, Leona, is still in and Andy returns (although at the cost of Mai which pisses my friend off).

you are right...if im not mistaken in the KOF timeframe rock is like 10 years old..,.garou takes place 10 years after fatal fury/kof so it makes sense from a story point of view i guess.

Capcoms DLC basically removed the alternative costumes from the arcade version and charged you an extra $25 to get back something yanked from the game. THAT was the bitch.

Capcom got slammed for having DLC that was composed of costumnes already ont he disc you paid for and adding a lame MP mode that was a fairly minor change from an existing mode. Also, this just confirms that they are planning on having DLC, we have yet to confirm what that is or when it will be available. So no point in crying foul yet.

The difference is that Capcom had the content on the disc and sold it as unlock keys. SNK is doing extra characters for people who want to buy them. Which I would buy some specific characters since my game relies on certain types. I'd love to see Lucky Glauber as DLC.

I actually would prefer the Player Match over Ranked Match myself but that's just me. I would so buy extra characters if they include my favorites(of course I prefer if they were already in the game but adding additional charactes is not necessarily a bad thing is it)?

And goddammit people stop complaining about dlc being announced. DLC is good.

If they have new characters as payable DLC, I'll delay my purchase of this game. I will for a special deal at some retailers or price drop. There are enough other fighters out there to get my attention.

I hope it's downloadable characters, because the 20 fighter roster is laughable. Some series mainstays are missing (like Mai Shiranui). I'd like King to be added too, because with the remixed graphics came new costumes for most, if not all characters, and we could finally see King look like a FEMALE for a change, like she's supposed to be.

The point of King wearing a tuxedo when she fights is because when she started fighting, men wouldn't take her seriously and would exclude her from fighting because she was a woman.
After over a decade of fighting in The King of Fighters tournaments, I think it's pretty safe to say she has respect from virtually all the male fighters and no longer needs to hide her gender...

I don't think that it will be downloadable characters since in the last KoF game they had characters that you can unlock when doing challenege mode. Unless they're desperate and want to milk our money just to download a few characters then that would be silly for them to do.

I think the massive amount of work needed just for one character and the sheer luck they're having generating buzz for this iteration means they'll want to stick with KOFXII for a while and just release "teams" as DLC. Just my thoughts though.
