Joystiq impressions: Madden NFL 10 (Xbox 360)
Are you ready for some football, even though though we're still a few months away from the start of the season? EA has made it no secret at all that they're ready for you. This year's development blog has offered up the most transparent production of a Madden game ever ... but does it make a difference? Are you willing to gamble with your hard-earned dollars in the hopes that they got it right?
With its lock on the NFL licensing for video games, Madden NFL 10 could come out with the players wearing frilly tutus and ballet shoes, and it would still sell a kajillion copies, although that's easily chalked up to the name recognition of the game, and the fact that EA has gotten it right more often than it's gotten it wrong. So why does it feel like every year Madden adds more modes and features, without taking a look at the core gameplay to see what they can change?
We took a look at the Xbox 360 version recently at an EA preview event, and the game certainly looks a lot prettier than ever before (and much sharper than it's cartoonish Wii cousin), but is the gameplay any better? Find out beyond the break after you peep the new images below.
At first glance you can easily see the graphic upgrades in Madden NFL 10. Not just in all of the new character animations they've upgraded and added, but just one look at the turf and you can almost count every blade of grass, real or artificial. Combine that with all of the additional animations they've added to up the realism, like Pro-Tak animation system which can dogpile up to nine guys on the football and let you fight for fumbles at the bottom of a mountain of linebackers, and yes, it's very impressive.
While the game might not have received the full Fight Night Round 4 "let's fix the clipping!" treatment, we can understand that it's probably easier to fix the animations of two guys punching each other, vs. two eleven man teams going at it on the field. Still, Pro-Tak hopes to address that, and during our time with the game we didn't see any real problems like players strolling through people on the sideline like they were ghosts. The game felt solid, especially when you kept the ball on the ground and trucked your running back through a herd of defensive players. It's nice to see that the running game hasn't been neglected this time around, even though Cardinal wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald shares the cover in this edition.
Other than the graphical improvements, at the basic level, the game plays exactly the same as it has in the past. If you've loved Madden over the last few years, then you'll be happy with this one. However we've noticed that it's slowly slipping away from the core gameplay over the years, and new mode-itis is one of the reasons. As with NCAA, EA keeps piling on the modes with Madden, and sometimes the fun factor gets buried in the process.
Over the past few years we've seen a slew of additions like: Playmaker, Hit Stick, Truck Stick, Precision Passing, Smart Routes, Weapons, the Madden IQ and so on. This year is no different and besides Pro-Tak we'll be seeing an enhanced franchise mode, and a presentation mode called "The Emotion of the NFL," which we'll be taking a look at down the line, but we'd like to see Madden take some risks with their engine and possibly try a new approach to the game. But since this is a cash cow for EA, we doubt they'll risk the loss in development time to really innovate.
There has been enough bitching and moaning about the fact that the NFL really hamstrung the video game development process by giving the license for games to just one company, and that means they'll be sitting pretty on top of the football gaming heap until innovation comes along and shakes everything up. But for now, Madden keeps fighting for yardage, and despite the occasional setback (online gaming -- *cough* -- which despite its glitches has racked up over 500 million games ... hmmm, were any of those quit out of early?), we're glad to see that it's still moving forward, even if it's only by inches.
We only played the Xbox 360 version of Madden, and only in local matches, so we're not sure what improvements EA has made to the online gameplay, which has been marred by lag in the past. However, EA gave us the standard party line that the PS3 version will look the same. We'll be looking at the other new additions to the game in the coming months as EA ramps up to an August 14 release date.

I officially protest the use of Madden 10 as the title. All things will be 2010 as it makes everything sound futuristic.
Storm Eagle @ May 18th 2009 3:44PM
Yeah, I didn't understand that decision either. I was sure that they would just sacrifice the box space to add in the '2' and the '0'. Calling all their games "Generic Sports Title 10" makes them sound stupid, old and dated....oh wait.
I miss ESPN NFL 2K(Insert # here)!!!!!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ May 18th 2009 4:15PM
I wish they would call it 2010 as well....could be worse tho they could have said "010"
lol
DBuck_Eye @ May 18th 2009 4:49PM
Uh-oh. ZenGaijin is officially protesting EA. You'd better listen up or Madden 10 (soon to be Madden 2010) is gonna flop. (This is more mocking your use of "officially", as opposed to the point being made by the post. I think it's a dumb name too)
DangerMouse @ May 18th 2009 7:11PM
Only 85 more years until Madden 96 - Part 2.
xblingdaddy2005x @ May 18th 2009 10:17PM
I will officially be referring to this years edition as Madden one-oh.
Dave @ May 19th 2009 12:43PM
Street Fighter 2010
LOL
Eric @ May 18th 2009 3:41PM
I really did not care for last years Madden. Just found it lacking, anyone else feel that way?
jetenginejesus @ May 18th 2009 3:42PM
agreed 100%. not terrible, just... missing something.
Markez @ May 18th 2009 5:44PM
No. Every subsequent year is a little more improved than the previous iteration, that's basically the way the 'franchise' operates. What was missing from the last one that made it worse to you?
Peter Moore @ May 18th 2009 6:26PM
No.
FOXHOUND @ May 18th 2009 11:28PM
Was this missing something?
Yes.
Both the game and this interview was missing the ultimate question:
"WHEN THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO GET ANOTHER MUTANT LEAGUE GAME?!"
Cody @ May 18th 2009 3:43PM
"Other than the graphical improvements, at the basic level, the game plays exactly the same as it has in the past. "
aaaaand that's the deal breaker for me.
I can't think of any one game series' gamplay that is more stale than the Madden series. After '05 on Gamecube, I just stopped caring. Maybe 2010 on Wii will change my mind, but 07 and 08 didn't.
Joe H @ May 18th 2009 5:34PM
Have you only played the Wii versions, or the 360 one as well?
The 360 one is a huge leap forward in gameplay.
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ May 18th 2009 5:42PM
@Co
Though you are without a doubt one of the top 5 Nintendo shills on this website I have to completely agree that the Wii version of Madden 10 looks the most innovative out of the bunch. Though I don't really put much merit into what Joystiq says about sports titles (no offense just saying) the Wii version is looking pretty slick.
I've been saying for a while that developers need to make the multiplatform Wii releases completely different than the HD versions because in comparison they will always be shittier. The Wii version of Shaun White snowboarding was the best version and I'm thinking the Wii version of Madden will do the same thing. All it takes is a few minutes of thought to make the graphics more cartoony and the gameplay less simulation like to make it more accessible and in turn innovative especially in the case of Madden.
sweet greggo @ May 18th 2009 3:44PM
Looks pretty sweet, and I'm not even a fan of sports games.
Brazell @ May 18th 2009 3:45PM
Games have been lagtastic in the past? Hm. The madden series has been one of the few sports games to *not* be ruined by lag. Heck, MLB 2K and THe Show are entirely unplayable (although 2K9's online runs much, much better).
coffins outside the door @ May 18th 2009 4:14PM
The Show unplayable?! You're drunk.
Phizzy @ May 18th 2009 4:22PM
You're sexy!
el serpiente @ May 18th 2009 11:23PM
The Show 08 was terrible in the beginning and was playable a few months into the season, but The Show 09 has been spectacular.
holmes @ May 18th 2009 3:46PM
i played madden 09 for my gamer points and then quickly traded it in. it wasn't fun to play online and certainly not by myself. this preview nailed the problem right on the head: too many modes, not enough innovation.
i really want to give EA my money for a new madden, but this review actually dampened my hope a lot. i'm sick of buying more of the same, and madden 10 could be where i finally take a stand.
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ May 18th 2009 5:37PM
You make some valid points. I'm about to say something I never thought I would say ... The Wii version of Madden 10 with the styleized graphics and innovative control scheme looks like the best version of madden this year. The graphics are kind of an NFL Blitz meets Team Fortress 2 style reminescent of the new Star Wars animated movie.
MLS @ May 18th 2009 3:47PM
Is it just me, or does this seem to be the most uncanny valley Madden game ever?
Jerk Face @ May 18th 2009 4:14PM
Ha ha... Oh yeah. Dead eyes are dead.
Tim @ May 18th 2009 8:58PM
finally someone agrees! if i want high definition football with intense realism, ill turn my tv on.
SP @ May 18th 2009 3:49PM
If they leave out the ability to create your own playbooks again I will skip this years version also, and for the love of all things holy bring back the PS2 control scheme.
Vcize @ May 18th 2009 4:37PM
Amen on the PS2 control scheme.
Caveman @ May 18th 2009 3:49PM
Looking good.
Prox @ May 18th 2009 4:16PM
I will agree, Caveman; it certainly looks better than stick men chucking spears at bison painted on a cave wall.
Caveman @ May 18th 2009 5:37PM
LOL
profeteer @ May 18th 2009 4:02PM
Enough Madden, I want Backbreaker already.
Mr Khan @ May 18th 2009 6:48PM
believed to be vaporware at this point, as the game was basically a tech demo for Euphoria
Nash @ May 19th 2009 2:45PM
Backbreaker was just featured on Qore. I hope it does come out...that engine is awesome.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ May 18th 2009 4:25PM
I Still say they need to bring back late hits....sure it may be unsportsmanlike but it DOES happen in real life, sometimes on purpose sometimes on accident. The point is it happens and if the is SUPPOSE to be as life-like as possible it NEEDS to be there
umm....hello??? @ May 18th 2009 11:04PM
TOTALLY agree. my favorite thing to do after the dumb game doesn't respond to my awesome skillz and the other team scores is to lay down the smack on some poor bystander with a late hit. (also a favorite thing to do in hockey games).
Yipcanjo @ May 18th 2009 4:32PM
If not already suggested, these sports games could use a "come out every other year" release schedule -- if not less frequently. They rarely improve much from year to year, and often regress slightly in areas.
So...release the game, and release an "update" the following year that makes the players, stats, etc. all current. You could even *charge* (GASP!) for the update!
Or, just keep releasing the same game -- with minor updates -- each year, and watch people plunk down $60 each time. Why fix what ain't broken :(
me = fail
Vcize @ May 18th 2009 4:38PM
If they had a good core game I would agree. Heck, I really really wish we were still playing Madden '04 with updated rosters, etc via DLC every year.
But in its current form, I'd hate to be stuck with Madden's lacking core gameplay for the next 3-5 years. Even though they haven't really been fixing it too much with each new game, at least it leaves the possibility open (and it has gotten progressively better even if it still has a long ways to go).
Vcize @ May 18th 2009 4:36PM
So we're still talking about those blades of grass, huh?
Any word on whether or not we'll get a REAL online franchise mode this year (like NCAA's online dynasties)?
Kevin Kelly @ May 18th 2009 4:38PM
That's a good, valid question. EA said we'll have more info about the online modes "soon." But whether or not that means before E3 - you got me.
j.howlett @ May 18th 2009 4:50PM
i still plan on getting this as the first madden i spend money on since the snes days, before gameday on the ps1.
deaftly @ May 18th 2009 4:52PM
WTF of course you HAD to use the 360 version you biased jerks!
Kevin Kelly @ May 18th 2009 4:54PM
Well, they weren't showing off the PS3 version, and we didn't make it to the Wii version. What can ya do?
deaftly @ May 18th 2009 5:00PM
Just joshin ya buddy!
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ May 18th 2009 5:21PM
Just ignore him ... business as usual for Deaftly.
J Snaz @ May 18th 2009 5:07PM
Did the ability to break off animations as a D-lineman do anything? I was hoping that would improve pass rush.
Jason @ May 18th 2009 5:15PM
Looks cool. Can't wait
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ May 18th 2009 5:19PM
I have to ask why they would fix something that isn't broken? Why completely overhaul the experience when it's already very authentic to the real thing?
I never really had issues with online lag out of last years Madden except for ocassionally. What I would love for them to completely eliminate is the glitches. I'm talking about the blitzes that can't be stopped, wr screens that are damn near impossible to stop, huddling into a different formation that puts say Hester at RB and general stuff like the freeze glitch.
They need to add some sort of a true simulation mode for people (like myself) who want to play online but in a way thats actually true to the sport. A mode that punishes people who quit (don't make me play through the rest of the game against the computer if it's already 21-0 in the 2nd quarter just to get the win).
I don't think the problem is with the core mechanic of the game itself other than a few exploitable plays. If it's banned in the Madden challenge it should be removed from all playbooks during online matches. They just need to level the playing field or make it possible for people who want to play a simulation game to easier find each other.
The sad thing is that the only true way to compete in Madden in a fair environment is to play local multiplayer. Thats why I pretty much gave up on multiplayer last year after about 50 or so games. This was when I still had my 360 and this was one of the only games I preferred on the 360. I had a record of something like 25-4 with another 15 games that people quit on me that I just quit as well instead of playing for the win. If I was in the 4th quarter I would finish it out but I don't care enough about the rankings to get every victory I'm deserved. I want to play against other people not the damn computer! If I wanted to play the computer I would have done a franchise which is what I eventually switched to after being frustrated with people quitting.
Ryan @ May 18th 2009 5:22PM
I don't trust Joystiq with sports games. I'll wait for more knowledgeable sites to make a preview I can believe in.
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ May 18th 2009 5:45PM
Maybe one day they will hire a blogger who actually enjoys sports games.
I'm also going to go into rage mode if I hear one more person call UFC Undisputed a wrestling game.
Mr Khan @ May 18th 2009 6:51PM
They had one for a while in the past. One Dan Dormer, iirc.
At least, he seemed like he was more knowledgeable about this sort of thing.
