Gallery: Punch-Out!!
The big draws for Punch-Out!! on the Wii are motion-based controls and Balance Board support -- and they're a lot more responsive and fun to use than you would find in Wii Sports' boxing mode. With the analog stick controlling your character's movement, it's fairly easy to dodge and take out your opponents. It works, but the game really shines when you're playing with the classic controls.
Punch-Out!! fans will feel right at home once they switch to classic mode. Controls are the same they've been for more than a decade, so you'll be able to get right into the action and enjoy the game. Another reason to choose classic over the Wiimote-and-Nunchuk method is speed, as you'll be a lot faster both dodging and delivering punches. It's a drawback of the motion-based controls, because you can easily push a button faster than it takes you to fake-throw a punch. Also, the motion-based controls may be surprisingly responsive, but that doesn't mean there won't be instances where you accidentally throw a punch or deliver a strike too late, which can be a big problem in the latter parts of the game.
Another issue I had with the game was a sharp increase in difficulty almost out of nowhere. The game is divided into 3 different circuits, and veterans of Punch-Out!! will likely experience what I did: eight boxers who are pushovers and then the last circuit of five, which really jacks up the difficulty. It can be frustrating and tough transition, but it's a lot better than the alternative of the entire game being incredibly easy to conquer.

But even after you plow through the circuits there's more to do, as Nintendo has finally figured out how to add replay value to a Punch-Out!! game. There's a Head-to-Head mode, as well as Exhibition matches with scenarios to complete (such as defeat Super Macho Man in Round 1, and TKO or KO Great Tiger using only right jabs). The Head-to-Head mode is fairly fun, and should replace Wii Sports boxing for most folks, but it would have been nice to be able to select different boxers aside from Little Mac.
Nintendo has done a good job of throwing a new coat of paint on Punch-Out!!, but has also taken special care to make sure the core of the experience has not been changed for Wii. This means that fans of the franchise won't feel alienated, and newcomers can easily pick up the Wiimote (and Nunchuk, if that's how they want to roll) and get into the action.

Y'all missed the epic spoilage, though.
AND HERE THERE ARE SPOILERS, SO YOU ARE WARNED
The game's got Donkey Kong. Yup...
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 18th 2009 11:47AM
Awesome!
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:22PM
You see the DK video footage? He's A BEAST, man
Totally getting this game.
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 18th 2009 4:50PM
Oh, so they decided to bring Mike Tyson back?
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 18th 2009 11:46AM
Any idea if the Wii fit controls make this game better?
HighFiveJesus @ May 18th 2009 11:54AM
actually the gametrailers review said the balance board isn't very responsive and the remote controls are a little iffy and they prefer using the controller sideways.
so...like almost all the good nintendo games, there is little to no reason to use the motion controls unless you really really like them.
Mr Khan @ May 18th 2009 12:13PM
Probably end up like Mario Kart Wii, where the motion controls are just fine, but everyone says they're not
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:23PM
"Probably end up like Mario Kart Wii, where the motion controls are just fine, but everyone says they're not"
Lemme guess, because they wanna look cool on the internet, right?
Couldn't be because the analog controls are more sensitive and easier for those of us who've been using it for years to just jump into and master. Nope. Has to be 'cuz they wanna look cool to strangers they'll never meet
rite

Oh that's a shame I would have bought a Wii fit if it made the game a little more like those boxing in the arcades,I loved those even when I ran out of stamina by the 3rd 4th opponent.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 18th 2009 1:13PM
Om nom nom I keep eating words
*more like those boxing games in the arcades.

Okay now I'm confused.
Doug @ May 18th 2009 6:10PM
I wonder how great Motion + is really going to be. Nintendo seems to be riding a lot on this.
Aaron @ May 18th 2009 11:47AM
Looks like fun.
zkey14 @ May 18th 2009 11:48AM
I love Punch-Out!!, but from the footage we've been shown and this review it's easy to see there's not all that much that's new with this installment. Still, I'll pick it up, because games like these never get old.

tmacsaldkfjhaf78%#&^*:
"what is joystiq talking about? Did they even look at the graphics when they reviewed this? Theres no way this can be a fun game, its on the wii. Im gonna call them up and tell them (dials)... Hello...Yeah Vladameir Cole? Can you tell them that I did some resourcing and it turns out that Punch Out!! is actually not a good game... its on the wii.... what do you mean you dont work there anymore?
but what about our crusade!?...
tmacairjordan87 @ May 18th 2009 12:02PM
You've got a lot to learn kid. You don't call people out before they even do something, that just makes you look like an ass but I guess you did that already last night when you said I only respond to replies....when I was the one who started that long chain.
I wasn't even going to say anything about it on here, as I've already said it before. It's punch-out, it's a remake therefore I've played it already and have no reason to play this one. Nothing more needs to be said.
nofriendo @ May 18th 2009 12:14PM
What do you mean tmac. you said it. isnt that you name up there?
nofriendo @ May 18th 2009 12:22PM
Ok, so maybe I'm the imposter.
As far as replying goes, I dont know what your reading but I've always kept it along of the conversation. Try saying the same thing to the hundreds of people that get an email from you that has nothing to do with what they posted, only some other insulting comments to someone else.
so you're full of shit, your just making stuff up now.
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:29PM
@ nofriendo
More attacking bullshit. I hated it when folks were doing it to Fernando, I hated it when people were doing it to Mr. Khan, and I hate it now with tmac.
Grow up, yo. tmac may be on the other side of the spectrum as far as tastes go (and sometime his disagreements can border on or totally cross the line into trollan) but I've never seen him resort to stupidity like this.
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:31PM
Aaaaah, didn't mean to come off as an asshole, bro. It's just that I'm sick and tired of seeing this kind of stuff.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ May 18th 2009 12:36PM
What are you on nofriendo? Works going a little slow today, can I have some?
Jason Statham (Aka Vegeta) @ May 18th 2009 12:48PM
@Insight.
You're not sounding like an asshole, you're comnpletely right. It's a different story if Tmac or someone else comes into a thread acting like a complete douche. But there's no point in attacking someone, especially if they haven't done anything yet. All it does it makes you as bad as the person you're attacking.
heyo007 @ May 18th 2009 1:18PM
The Internet: The place to spout off random sayings to others that would, normally, get you punched in the face if you said it in person.
Seriously, calling people out like that (no matter who it is) is sort of lame. Can't we all just get along and enjoy our sandwiches?
tmacairjordan87 @ May 18th 2009 2:25PM
"I dont know what your reading but I've always kept it along of the conversation"
Just like what you're doing now, by attacking someone who hasn't said anything about the topic of the article right?
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 18th 2009 4:49PM
geez, I might be the Maggie Simpson to tmac's baby with 1 eyebrow, but even I think Nofriendo needs to stop pulling this stupid shit and take his ritalin before posting
nofriendo @ May 18th 2009 9:04PM
Whoa, ok. Ill admit. It was a pretty stupid thing to do.. geez.
First ill apologize to tmac then I apologize to "jerk face" (who i replied rather harshly on a previous article towards something I actually agree with)
oh yeah and thanks for making me the scapegoat for what people do all the time on this, including the in this thread.
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 11:39PM
"oh yeah and thanks for making me the scapegoat for what people do all the time on this, including the in this thread."
You'll find I do this to just about everyone I catch making posts like that. I'm just that vindictive.
Dan @ May 18th 2009 11:55AM
that looks...so, so shit.
Rafael @ May 18th 2009 12:05PM
like you right ?
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:37PM
oh snap
HighFiveJesus @ May 18th 2009 11:56AM
its a pretty low roster of characters. 13 i think, at the max? and no online play... weak.
still, i might get it for cheap because i know its still good.
Rafael @ May 18th 2009 12:06PM
this game is not made for online play , its made to call all your friends at home and play all night, drinking some beers.
zkey14 @ May 18th 2009 12:10PM
drinking some beers
HighFiveJesus @ May 18th 2009 12:12PM
nothin wrong with that, but the multiplayer is just little mac vs little mac isn't it? Or can you actually pick the characters?
some brooskies could help but i dunno if it would hold the interest of me and others for more than a few weeks.
Mr Khan @ May 18th 2009 12:14PM
14 Characters, actually.
DK, Donkey Kong. DK, Donkey Kong is here
Geist @ May 18th 2009 12:31PM
Does anyone remember when, back in the day, the defining characteristic of consoles and the logic many people used for buying them was that you weren't sitting in front of a PC, alone, while you played with people online you were never going to see? It was about getting friends together and playing games, next to each other, and you wouldn't have to worry about if the multiplayer was online only, which is retarded.
Yeah, I miss those days.
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:32PM
Each character has two versions. Remember how each character has an exploit, you know, a weak point? In Title Defense (which is unlocked after becoming the world champ), they rectify those weaknesses - Glass Joe, for example, comes into the ring wearing protective headgear and sporting completely new move patterns.
Insight (Fatass Defense Force) @ May 18th 2009 12:35PM
"It was about getting friends together and playing games, next to each other, and you wouldn't have to worry about if the multiplayer was online only, which is retarded. Yeah, I miss those days."
I don't remember those days, they didn't exist. Well, not to say they didn't exist, it's just that there's still plenty of local multiplayer games out there on the newer console. They're not noticed much because nowadays the high profile games are the ones that don't have local multiplayer, but you're acting as though online only is an industry standard or something.
Online multiplayer is ALWAYS a nice option, unless it's broken of course.
False @ May 18th 2009 3:26PM
The Game Informer review notes that all of these guys will be looking for rematches after completing the game the first time, so it's 13 characters and 26 bouts. Not a lot of gameplay, but comparatively more than the past Punch-Out titles.
Dopple Boppler @ May 18th 2009 12:00PM
Can't wait for this, but I wanna use my gift card at Wal-Mart so I guess I sort of have to wait a couple extra days. Rats. At least I'll have Majora's Mask and PiCTOPiC to keep me company.
Iridium @ May 18th 2009 12:15PM
I was really hoping that the motion controls would be really good. That is the point of the Wii isn't it? Instead we get another gamecube game.
All of the reviews say the only way to play the game is with the classic controls. Since there is only one new boxer and the motion controls do not work, I'd rather just get Super Punch Out on the VC.
I really wanted this game to be good but it isn't worth $50. The Wii will just sit silent until something comes along that is actually worth playing.
Jason Statham (Aka Vegeta) @ May 18th 2009 12:27PM
"The big draws for Punch-Out!! on the Wii are motion-based controls and Balance Board support -- and they're a lot more responsive and fun to use than you would find in Wii Sports' boxing mode."
So I guess you didn't read this part then.
"I really wanted this game to be good"
What the fuck are you talking about, the game has gotten positive reviews so far so I don't really see how this game isn't good.
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 18th 2009 4:54PM
OH NOES! NO WAGGLING MAKES THIS GAME EPIC FAILZ
Seriously, thats not an argument on why not to buy Super Mario Galaxy or SSBB and it sure as hell isn't an argument on why not to buy this
Nicholas @ May 25th 2009 9:18AM
What in the hell is wrong with a gamecube game? I don't see your comparison at all. "Ooooooh, _______ was really crap, so instead of an Xbox 360 game, its just an Xbox game!" Think before you speak...
David Black @ May 18th 2009 12:16PM
I just don't think I can justify paying full price for this. I'll wait till it drops and then pick it up. *Sigh* This seems to be a pattern with me and the Wii lately.
jonaswan1 @ May 18th 2009 12:47PM
It's a Nintendo published game, so the price won't drop. If it doesn't sale, it'll just be discontinued.
XBL: Burritoclock @ May 18th 2009 12:59PM
Yes, when will a company come along and realizethere is a market for used games? Sounds like multi-billion dollar idea to me.
Moptimus Slime (PhilosoRaptor is the new Keyboard Cat) @ May 18th 2009 5:02PM
I was thinking about creating just that company Burritoclock.
I'd call it Game Boutique, or maybe Electronic Stop. And there would be one in every mini mall across America (including Flea Market Montgomery, since its just like a mini mall)
