- Gamespy (90/100): "Punch-Out!! is destined to become one of this generation's top classics, right up there with Super Mario Galaxy. It's one heckuva peace offering for Nintendo's jilted lifers, an elaborate brainteaser for everyone who picks it up, and absolutely the best Punch-Out!! to date. If you're still fishing for a reason to own a Wii, this is it."
- Game Informer (90/100): "Despite these complaints, the single-player has always been the focus of Punch-Out, and Next Level delivers. What better way to show your buddy up than to totally annihilate the boxer that just KO'd him?"
- GamePro (90/100): "There's no denying it: Punch-Out!! is some of the most fun I've had on the Wii in quite some time. A spectacular trip down memory lane, Punch-Out!! manages to capture the old-school essence that made the 1987 original such a success, all the while integrating just enough new material to help it hold its own. While Punch-Out!! is by no means perfect, it's undoubtedly one of the finest arcade-inspired titles to grace store shelves in this "next gen" era, and is without a doubt worth any hardcore fight-fan's hard-earned cash."
- GameTrailers (85/100): "It's disappointing that the motion controls are more a novelty than an effective way to play, but the personality, nostalgic nods, hidden goodies, and battle-tested, edge-of-your-seat gameplay demonstrate that some things never go out of style."
Metareview - Punch-Out!! (Wii)
82
It may not be a TKO, but Punch-Out!! on the Wii is certainly a knock-out. We've already entered the ring of public opinion with our review, but let's find out what the others in the peanut gallery have to say about it. It appears that -- much like Little Mac -- the series has aged gracefully and found a nice fit on the Wii.

I would love to take credit for the WSM, but a soccermom that I overheard in Best Buy one day kept asking every single employee (as if she would get a different answer) "do you have any of the Wii Sports Machine Game thingys?"
Then there is the Wii Fit Machine or WFM.
Basically the two things that the rebranded Nintendo is known for are
WSM and WFM. Without those two (useless to me) collection of mini-games...the Wii would be no where near as popular with the lemmings of the world.
Oh and WRE congrats on the rugrat.

what a bunch of horse crap. the wii controls make this game a lot more fun. what the hell would be the point of playing a wii game without the wii controls????
it's blasphemous to say mario kart is not fun with the wii steering wheel. I think most people here don't even try stuff on the wii out.
hey look it's a new wii game, it automatically sucks, let's make fun of it. the wii controls can't possibly be fun.
those of you that don't try it out are missing out. I love using the wii controls even if it's not perfect sometimes. that is the of the wii, have fun with new controls.
ok done ranting, go ahead and downvote me
BTW I own a 360 too, I'm not a fanboy of either system.

Yeah, but you ARE a moron for assuming that everyone who doesn't think the motion control schemes for these games are better, are just saying so simply because it's a Wii game
Mario Kart Wii is fun with the wheel, but good luck making precise motions and drifting in chains with it.
"I love using the wii controls even if it's not perfect sometimes. that is the of the wii, have fun with new controls."
the GAME is what we're supposed to be having fun with - the controls are just an extra. when a game ships with controls that aren't all that, people tend to call the devs out on it. This game happens to have pretty decent controls that become useless the moment you go to fight one of the harder boxers.

A knockout (KO) is more impressive than a TKO (technical knockout). It sounds like Alex has it backwards in the first line of the post.

>TKO also stands for Total Knock Out
Not in boxing, it doesn't. And if wiki doesn't do it for you:

Right. I believe TKO in boxing terms is "technical knock out" which is what you get if its a technical win, and not a full on complete knock out victory.

wow insight, thanks for letting me know I'm a moron. I never knew that until now....
rather than insult you, I'll just state my opinion and leave it at that.
first off most people commenting in here sound like that haven't tried the game out yet, so your argument fails.
secondly, to me the best wii games are the ones that emphasize the controls. that is what makes it fun. if the controls are terrible, the game will suck. plain and simple.
on any other video game system your controller argument would be logical.
this is the wii we're talking about. not 360, ps3 or whatever else floats your boat.

That's a good point, but when you have a whole row of reviewers addressing the same exact complaints, it's hard not to be able to say even without playing the game that there's a problem.

You pretty much repeated what I said here. I can't say the controls are terrible (because I have the game, they aren't that bad), but here's the thing - you're playing a GAME where the later GAMEPLAY requires precision and quickness. Unless you play games simply for new and exciting controls rather than to actually progress then there's a problem.
You're acting as though, because this is the Wii, controls are the only thing that matter. You need to take into account the relationship between the controls and the game.

"but for the fact that reviewers have gotten this wrong before (again with Mario Kart Wii)"
They're wrong, no doubt about it. After all, they couldn't POSSIBLY be thinking something like that because the analog controls are more sensitive and easier for those of us who've been using it for years to just jump into and master. Nope. They're 'wrong', because they have an opinion that doesn't fall in line with yours
yup

This would be a must-buy for me if it was priced appropriately. $50 for what's basically a clone of an old game with a graphical overhaul? Ridiculous. If this was a Sony franchise, for example, it would be $10 on PSN.
