A video of what is allegedly 'Project Trico,' the third game from developer Team Ico, has surfaced on rumor-site PlayStation Lifestyle. We've no idea when the video was made, but it shows off almost four minutes of footage from the game. The art style is very similar to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus -- particularly the environment and character design, which lends credence to the idea that this is an official video. (There's also the fact that its opening scene looks exactly like a teaser image released by Team Ico last January.)
Hopefully this leak means we'll be hearing more about this game soon. We'd be happy if the entire Sony E3 press conference was a video dedicated to this amazing kitty dragon (LOLCATs go!). That thing is too adorable for words. Check out the video for yourself after the break.
[Update] When contacted by Joystiq, SCEE stated it's "not making any comment" regarding the Trico video.
My guess is that this is test footage of the gryphon animations. Stand-in character animations for the boy left over from SotC.
The only really 'finished' part seems to be a few sections of the levels and the gryphon animations.
If this is real, I would love to see the behind the scenes part where they strapped a motion capture suit to a cat and had it do, uh, cat stuff.
Other than that, this looks amazing. I already know this is going to be one of those amazing games I remember years later and still want to re-play it.
This going to be sad.... I have a feeling that that creature will die... :( It's so darn cute, how it was scrambling with its hind legs to perch on the platform.
The trailer looked reminiscent of such that it somehow reminded me of a slide-show tribute of some sort to someone who once lived...
I see elements from Panzer Dragoon though, mainly the bond between boy and his creature... this game is going to hit it big but sadly and most probably will only appeal to a small monority.
What a beautiful game.... This is one reason for me to get a PS3!
Also, just to let you know, this video is over a year old and was shown to a select few journalists at TGS 07. I would guess it was an initial mockup and thus, has improved immensly since then. I really don't know why you're bashing the game. It's just a mockup video from ages ago.
I saw the image at the top of the article, and was like "Nice photoshop, Joystick". Then i watched the actual video, and the huge cat-bird with a beak was actually real =P
Looks incredible though, i'm buying this for sure. SoTC was, and still is, one of my favourite games of all time.
A boy with no horns and his pal the puppy/bird (aka a Baby Colossus). Very possibly a prequel to Shadow of the Colossus, the same way it was a prequel to Ico?
It doesn't make it look any better. It's still FAR from crisp.
I played in 480p (widescreen, far from a given for PS2 games) just about 3 months ago. Good game, but the graphics don't look very good. The textures are far, far overstretched and washed out. It makes it seem like everything is blocky and running in 320x240. Although the poly edges are indeed high res but not anti-aliased properly (not all that uncommon on PS2).
Really, the only impressive thing about the graphics was the draw distance.
The engine that Team ICO use for their games run certain character animations under a physics engine. It's how they have the character climb slopes without improperly clipping polygons and gives the player the ability to hang to moving objects from any angle (while something is moving, no less). Unfortunately, it's VERY hard to make animations look incredibly realistic with that much code latched onto it, so you tend to get that gangly-swingy look to it.
The trade-off is a more realistic reaction to the environment (resulting in better gameplay) at the cost of a perfectly hand-animated character (who would simply use the same walking animation no matter the environment).
Yeah and this looks to combine both of them into one cohesive experiense. I'm glad we have them and Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain) to give us engaging experiences that aren't so cliche and generic.
By the way ... UFC Undisputed is really fantastic. I also played the new fight night demo and it's Ok but I was a little disappointed after playing UFC. It will be a solid game but it isn't all they are hyping it to be in the developer videos.
You can get a fight night demo voucher if you pre-order it at gamestop.
This video was made to give people an idea of where they were going with the third installment. Go and look at the early footage of Project Nico (later became Shadow Of The Colussus) and you will see it was much different than the final project.
If this video doesn't make you excited than you don't have a pulse. This is especially true with all the recycled crap in the industry today. I'm glad there is one studio that has the creative freedom and support of it's publisher to push boundaries and give gamers different experiences.
This video isn't about gameplay or anything like that so much as it's giving people an idea about where they are going. This game has essentially combined Ico * SoTC into one experience. You have a giant ally to which you have an emotional connection to which there will undoubtedly be platforming and puzzle elements involved.
Just seeing the spears in Dragon Kitty made me sad .... Can't wait for this one and Heavy Rain as they look to really up the ante and deliver unique experiences.
Cool, instead of climbing on giant creatures just to kill them, you ride them instead! ...just keep Wander and Agro away from the kitty, they might get a little confused...
Obviously this is real footage there is no way that this is not. It matches the previously released shot and their previously established style too perfectly. Also obvious if you've ever seen the Nico trailer: This isn't representative of the final game...period. I'm excited as hell. Now where did Joystiq get the super clear screen cap from? Not that youtube video.
