Some Japanese companies not attending E3 over Swine Flu concerns
No, we can't believe we just wrote that headline either. And according to scattered reports (and a variety of phone calls we made this afternoon), it's the unfortunate truth: Some Japanese developers and producers are canceling their trips to E3 2009 due to Swine Flu worries. Capcom's Keiji Inafune and his game, Dead Rising 2, will both be missing. (This isn't the first time Inafune is canceling a trip.) Develop is also reporting that Square Enix and Koei will be canceling some employees' flights, with the Kingdom Hearts team and "an unspecified number of [Koei's] Japanese employees" taking the hit.We asked Tecmo if there would be a change in its lineup at E3, to which a company rep assured, "No. Our content is still scheduled to be there and everything on the show floor, if not by the staff that's scheduled to fly in from Japan, it'll be demonstrated by our own staff from the US office." Tecmo also said producers for its upcoming lineup are still scheduled to appear alongside their titles. "As of today, we've been told our producers will still be in attendance." Konami declined comment as of press time and the ESA (E3's governing body and financial supporter) has yet to respond to our inquiries. As it stands, it looks like we'll be waiting 'til PAX 2009 or even the Tokyo Game Show to get our hands on Dead Rising 2.

Brodo @ May 20th 2009 6:23PM
Those Japanese are wound up WAY too tight!
One thing is for sure, Reggie Fils-aime will be there, swine flu or not.
Oh and Cammy too
PS. I hope that Cammy's child made her another beautiful card, that was touching
Micheal82 @ May 20th 2009 6:57PM
The swine flu has killed far less than the regular flu. What does the regular flu have to do to get some media mass hysteria love?
HopkinsGamer @ May 20th 2009 4:35PM
So that's what the plan was all along. The media knew it wasn't working trying to connect video games to juvenile crimes. So instead they hyped up the swine flu to keep foreign developers out of the country in an attempt to sabotage E3. Bastards!
ColorblindMonk @ May 20th 2009 4:39PM
Oh noez! Paranoia strikes again! Porque!!!
ice~ @ May 20th 2009 4:40PM

Just don't eat pork and slaughter every pig you see and you'll be fine.
Pussies.
Cj @ May 20th 2009 4:43PM
Thats not how you get the virus. Its called Swine because it started from pigs. The virus became air born and able to infect humans. Eat pork all you want. Your misinformed buddy.
copa @ May 20th 2009 4:46PM
CJ, you are an ignorant fuck. SLAUGHTER THE PIGS!
SLAUGHTER THEM ALL!

Gun Barrier @ May 20th 2009 4:41PM
I can respect them wanting to protect their employees from this health risk, and try to prevent bringing the swine flu back home.
I just hope the show will still shine without them.
(I'm looking at you Nintendo)
mahouneko @ May 21st 2009 12:20AM
They're not trying to prevent it from being "brought home". They're trying to prevent it from infecting the rest of the E3 folks because Japan already has a fairly serious case of Swine Flu (as in there were 1000+ confirmed infections).
t_m @ May 21st 2009 7:58AM
1000+?? it was 257 this morning.
Seriously though, Japan takes flu VERY seriously.
Cj @ May 20th 2009 4:41PM
So stupid. Its just like any other flu. The only people that have dies were either young children or old people. The ones always susceptible to viruses and such. The media just LOVES throwing things out of proportion.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ May 20th 2009 5:10PM
you pissed off the 'Stiq trolls....lol
Cj @ May 20th 2009 5:32PM
I know. They want it to be from pork. I don't get people.
WINterfang @ May 20th 2009 5:35PM
Well I for once have being terribly Sick the last few days, I don't think I'll die but I feel really bad.
Cj @ May 20th 2009 5:41PM
If you have H1N1 then you get these pills. And ur all good.
WINterfang @ May 21st 2009 12:28AM
Where can I find this pills? any way I think I just have the regular flu with Diarrea but not Vomiting.
Also while this swine flu doesn't will kill anybody I understand why they will be concern I mean in a place as dense populated as Japan those thing spread super fast and lots of people will be sick and stay of work paralyzing the country.
Riley @ May 21st 2009 6:08AM
I think that falls under the category of TMI
copa @ May 20th 2009 4:44PM
Shhhh! Everybody in the US, just pretend like the swine flu epidemic hasn't wiped out half of our population by now.
Keep on posting, as if everything is OK, the swine flu is just an overblown scare, and our streets are not littered with the corpses of zombified manbearpigs. When you are posting pictures with your stories, use dated photos that show pre-Swine society and pretend like they are current.
Then, when the Japanese developers think it's all right, they'll send some of their developers over to E3.
And when they get off the plane on May 31st, EVERYBODY BREATHE ON THEM!
Neuromancer @ May 20th 2009 5:06PM
Funny you mention it, I was walking down the street today here in Baltimore trying to imagine if the swine flu mutated and killed a chunk of the population. It was actually kind of awesome just thinking about the whole city being empty and quiet except for roving gangs of swine mutants.
Neuromancer @ May 20th 2009 5:06PM
Earlier comment meant for copa, what the fuck Joystiq.
Draco @ May 21st 2009 12:13AM
Yep, everyone left should breath on them!
hopefully there are still a few people to man the airports at the end of the month as if they cant land no one can breath on them

People still worried about something that has killed less people than Car Accidents, Hitler, and the NORMAL Flu!??!?
Hell from what its sounding like these people already had underlying conditions so the Swine Flu just helped kill them faster....
not tryint to sound heartless but Gat Dayum!!
dead @ May 20th 2009 4:54PM
Last time this came around, far more people died from the vaccine that the disease itself.
And CJ- You are an idiot.
Latin_Trident @ May 20th 2009 4:45PM
I think they have a higher chance of dying from eating FUGU than the swine flu.
aggrazel @ May 20th 2009 4:53PM
Please ... calling it "swine flu" is offensive to some people.
We prefer to call it "Hamthrax".
Neuromancer @ May 20th 2009 5:07PM
For a dog thats pretty funny
Phillip @ May 20th 2009 7:26PM
Your picture just compliments your statement. Nice job.
chamelean75 @ May 20th 2009 4:57PM
Can't they still announcement Kingdom Hearts and show a few screen shots at least??
Blah @ May 20th 2009 5:29PM
"Can't they still announcement"
lol. If they were planning to announce it at E3 they would probably be going regardless of swine flu and just because the crew that's working on it is not going doesn't mean that the Square Enix guys can't announce it for them.
dantebk @ May 20th 2009 4:57PM
No Dead Rising 2 at E3? Bummer! The sequel to one of my favorite 360 games, and the first (and for all I know the last) time I'm attending E3, and it's not gonna happen. Super lame. Did they cancel their E3 visit for SARS? or Monkey Pox? How many stupid pandemics are we gonna be scared of this decade?
George @ May 20th 2009 4:59PM
this is a joke right?
Mr Khan @ May 20th 2009 5:09PM
Many countries have rather panicky quarantine laws.
tmacairjordan87 @ May 20th 2009 5:34PM
I'd rather them have these strict laws in place in case something deadly DOES actually start going around. Let's face it, we rip them now for this...but if it was something really bad and they didn't have these strict laws then we'd rip them for that. They can't win.
Josh @ May 20th 2009 11:26PM
No, not really. Just put the quarantine laws into effect *only when something "seriously deadly" is going around*.
Not for something like swine flu (though my sympathies are with those who lost loved ones to it).
Josh @ May 20th 2009 11:23PM
So. Freaking. Stupid.
Siggy @ May 21st 2009 12:00AM
Capcom must have swine flu confused with the T-Virus.
xtremeholymuffin @ May 21st 2009 12:03AM
Why don't you just wear your stupid fucking medical masks everywhere. Oh, what's that? You don't want to look like paranoid idiots?
Asian people sometimes, I swear......
xtremeholymuffin @ May 21st 2009 12:04AM
Perhaps that was too harsh.....
SERIOUSLY THOUGH, ITS NOT "SARS", IT'S THE FUCKING FLU
Elmoogle @ May 21st 2009 1:30AM
Actually SARS wasn't really any worse than the flu either, as far as death count goes. It put a huge dent in East Asian tourism though.
